RP: In Avalon
When: April 22nd, 2004
Who: Lavender Brown, Gabi Delacour
Where: Avalon Clinic
Private/Public: Private
Rating: All Ages
Summary: Gabi and Lavender meet at the Clinic.

For a place that housed some of the dirty little secrets of the wizarding world, the Avalon Clinic's gardens were wonderfully peaceful. Lavender was always partial to gardens, which probably wasn't surprising considering that her father was a herbologist. Playing in the gardens at home and being surrounded by nature had really just been a part of her growing up.

This was her second day at the clinic and she was already feeling a little restless from mind Healers prodding at her thoughts in their inquisitive sort of way. Later she was scheduled to talk to another Healer, to discuss her diet and physical health.

Now, though, she had a little time to herself and could wander the grounds. Everything was beautifully spring-like and Lavender couldn't do much to fight the urge to take off her shoes as she made her way across the lawn towards one of the ponds.

She was sitting in the garden outside the clinic, her knees pulled close to her as she drank in the spring sun and looked out over the pond. She liked this place, this spot in the gardens, even if she hated being at the clinic.

Between Fleur and Bill and Molly she hadn't been able to argue against it. Especially with the promise of a job when she left here.

Still she hated talking about Rabastan and what had happened with him, and even worse talking about everything that had happened before she was taken. Or trying. So far she'd refused to. She couldn't bring herself to face that. It was better forgotten.

Burying her face in her knees, she closed her eyes, wishing she could will everything away. Go back in time until she was ten years old and could still hide in her father's arms. He always looked so disappointed when he looked at her now. That hurt more than most other things. Even more than being stuck here.

She sighed and let the sun shine on her face again, turning when she heard a sound behind her. 'Hey,' she said to the woman, not sure what else to say. She wondered why she was here.

"Oh, hello." Wrapped up in her thoughts - or perhaps a deliberate lack of thoughts - Lavender hadn't even noticed the younger witch until she was standing rather close. "Sorry. I didn't see you there."

She moved a little further away, dropping her shoes on the grass before she sat down.

'That's okay,' Gabi answered, not sure what to say, but still curious about the other woman. She bit her lip, looking out over the pond again.

'It's a pretty pond,' she said hesitantly, not sure if she should speak or be quiet. She guessed the other witch wouldn't have sat down if she didn't want to talk though, so she kept on, mostly because she hadn't really spoken to anyone who wasn't family or a healer in quite some time. 'Have you been here long?'

Lavender glanced over. "Yeah," she agreed, peering into the depths of the water. "I think there's fish in there somewhere." She had memories of that, she was sure.

She tucked her hair behind her ear. "Um, no, not really. I only arrived yesterday. What about you?"

Gabi looked out over the water, sometimes thinking she had a memory of another lake. Deep, with fish and creatures. Then again she knew it was preposterous, everyone had told her so. She'd been put to sleep before they took her down into the depths of the waters.

'About a week,' she answered the question. She frowned a bit as she did, not pleased with staying here at all. She bit her lip, not sure what to say next. 'Don't know how long they want me to stay, though,' she finally added. 'Do you know?'

Looking at the witch, Lavender took a guess that she wasn't here entirely voluntarily. That was hardly surprising - Lavender could quite clearly remember her first stay here, how at first she'd still been denying that she needed any help at all, despite turning up intoxicated to Tallulah's fourth birthday party intoxicated.

"How long I'm staying? I don't know yet. Hopefully just a couple of weeks," she admitted. "Could be longer. I'm trying to stay open-minded at the moment."

Gabi glanced at the woman out of the corner of her eye. 'You're here by choice?' she asked, wondering why anyone would be. 'Why?'

She clamped her hand over her mouth. 'Sorry,' she said biting her lip. 'I didn't mean to pry.'

Gabrielle swallowed, chewing more on her lip. She tried to tell herself that Rabastan had not been involved in the attack, but she knew she couldn't be sure of that. Still, he wouldn't hurt a child! Of course not, he was probably not even there.

'I'm sorry she was hurt,' she said instead, pushing the image of Rabastan hurting anyone away from her. More importantly, pushing the image of herself doing the same away from her. She'd liked the dark spells he'd taught her. She couldn't deny that, even if she tried.

'Why did you drink when you were younger?' She knew the question must seem to come out of the blue, but she was curious. Once more she thought of her own drinking, and tried not to think of how much she'd wanted a drink since she'd arrived here.

"She's doing alright. And she's seven... she'll bounce back, I think. I hope so, anyway."

Lavender raised her eyebrows. She hadn't really expected that question. "I, um... After the war I didn't cope very well. I was hurt in the battle. Attacked." She closed her eyes for a moment. "I didn't like what I'd become, so I drank to numb things, I suppose."

'Seven?' Gabi asked, curling up a bit more, though she paid even more attention as Lavender went on.

'What had you become?' she asked thinking once more of herself. What did she become? A slut, a whore... But then was she worth more than that?

It was odd, but it was a lot easier to talk about her distant past - if it could be called that - than it was to talk about the things that had happened to her in the last couple of months.

"I was attacked by a werewolf. I'm not one myself, but... there were effects on me. It changed me and I didn't like it."

Gabi nodded, understanding being something but not being it fully. 'I'm half-veela,' she offered, for the first time offering something of herself. She glanced at Lavender, then back at the pond.

'You seemed to have fought a lot,' she said, sighing. 'I never fight.' She never had. Not even when professor Malheur had- She pushed the thought away. It was all her fault anyway.

Lavender sighed. "It feels like that," she agreed. "I don't think I ever look to get into a fight or whatever, but I think trouble is pretty good at finding me."

She pushed her hair back off her face, not sure how she managed to get into so much trouble. "Sometimes I think bad stuff is just attracted to me."

Gabi bit her lip again, looking down. 'And what would that help?' she asked. 'It wouldn't stop anything anyway.' She sat quiet for a moment, starting and stopping a few times before deciding to ask.

'Why do you fight?' she asked. 'Why bother when you're getting hurt anyway?' She quieted again, then asked the other question she needed to know. 'Is it easier? If you fight? Or should you just get what you can out of it and use them before they can use you?'

"Well, it should stop things."

Lavender frowned. "I fight because I don't want to get hurt. I guess I could just hide away and never get involved to protect myself, but that would never get me anywhere in life, would it?" She picked at a few more blades of grass.

"I suppose I used to use people a bit. At least, I got around a bit, never settled into anything serious. But for me that was more about having fun than trying to use them, if that makes any sense."

Gabi smiled. 'Should?' she asked, pulling her knees even closer to herself. 'I've found that should and does doesn't often go along.'

She looked at her, then frowned - a mixture of disgust and surprise on her face. 'You think sex is fun?' she asked. 'Ewww.' Then she remembered Harry, and bit her lip. 'I guess it can be not horrible - or even nice - when you really want it, but in general?' She shuddered. 'I hate sex.'

"Of course should," Lavender said, her brow furrowing. "If it's not consensual then it's..." She could feel her chest tightening more and more as Gabi spoke. Something wasn't right there.

"Maybe not 'fun' every time, but pleasurable, definitely." Lavender swallowed. She'd admit that she wasn't always the brightest candle around, but even she could piece things together. Or could she? Maybe she was getting it all terribly wrong.

"There was someone you couldn't say no to."

There was a directness to the question that made it impossible to ignore or avoid. Staring into the grass, she made herself as small as she could, trying to pretend the question wasn't hanging between them before she slowly nodded.

'It was my fault,' she then said, as if by instinct. 'He couldn't control himself, if I hadn't been half-' She closed her eyes. 'It not really important anyway.'

"But that's not right!" Lavender felt almost as if she was experiencing the outrage that Gabi just didn't seem to have in her. She let out a long breath. Because she was half what? Veela? It wasn't as though she was the first part-Veela woman. "I don't even know the full story and I don't believe it was your fault," she offered.

Lavender scratched almost impatiently at the bandages that were hidden beneath her blouse. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't pry. It's not of my business."

She hadn't expected the rush of emotions that came with the words the other woman was speaking. She couldn't even identify them all as they threatened to overwhelm her. She clenched her jaw, pushing everything back and failing terribly, a strangled sob escaping her before tears started flowing.

'How do you know?' she asked. 'I don't even know. What if I did something? I didn't kow, I didn't understand what it meant- How do I know?'

"Oh, Gabi." Lavender shifted across the grass so that she was a little closer, but she didn't reach out to touch her.

"I don't know for sure. But I trust my instincts." She frowned, looking out at the pond, rather than staring at Gabi. "Maybe this is where you take a leap of faith. Trust the Healers here."

'But what can they do?' she asked, looking at Lavender. 'I don't even know why I'm - It was so long ago, I should just forget about it. It's not like it matters.' Only it did, and even she knew that.

Hell she wanted a drink about now.

"They have good mind Healers here. Some who are good with memory, I think. Might be able to help you know what happened. But that's where trusting them comes in."

She sighed, so sorry for having brought this up for her. "You're crying," she pointed out gently. "It matters to you."

Using the sleeve of her robes, she tried to dry her tears even as she shook her head. 'I don't want to remember more,' she said strongly. 'I remember quite enough. Too much.'

She swallowed. 'Besides, no matter how much I remember I won't know that it wasn't my fault. I can't know what he went through. He was- is- trusted. Someone honourable. I was just...'

'The failure who couldn't pass my tests.' She snorted. 'Not to mention the trouble maker who would have been expelled if I hadn't left on my own.'

Lavender's eyes narrowed as she tried to process what Gabi was telling her. "So someone you trusted - someone in a position of authority? - forced sex on you when you were too young to even understand your own sexuality properly?" Lavender frowned. "Maybe I just don't understand the Veela thing properly," she said weakly, though that wasn't what she wanted to say. None of that sounded right to her.

She ducked her head. "Not everyone's good at tests," she offered quietly. "I would have failed most of mine if I wasn't good with a wand. I'm twenty-four soon and I still have trouble reading."
