RP: Homecoming
When: April 18th, 2004
Who: Lavender Brown, Richard Summerby
Where: Clink Street
Private/Public: Private
Rating: All Ages
Summary: Lavender makes a trip back to the flat for the first time since the attack.

It was raining. Not exactly bucketing it down, but pretty damn wet. So, naturally, Lavender had donned her wellies and gone for a walk in the gardens. Her father was a herbologist, so there actually were multiple gardens around the property. They all held different memories for her growing up here - the magic of the rose garden, for example. The kitchen garden was bittersweet in her mind, now taken over by Caitlyn and whatever she was growing for her latest cookbook.

Soaked through and shivering a bit, Lavender returned to the cottage. In her room, still decorated the same way it had been when she was thirteen, the summer before her parents had divorced, Lavender changed into dry clothes, replacing the dressings over her wounds. Nearly two weeks on they weren't as raw as they had been, but it would still be a couple of weeks before she could forgo the dressings.

She knew her scars perfectly, could probably draw them even if she were blindfolded. She'd spent enough time just staring at them back when she'd first got them. Except now she could already see there were new ones. New cuts that had been contaminated by the opening of her cursed scars. So much blood; she could almost smell the coppery scent now, swallowing against it.

Lavender tied her damp hair up into a ponytail, moving to lie on the bed. She picked up her mobile phone from where it was lying. Still working, still enough battery. There was even a signal. She bit her lip. It wasn't as though she had anything better to do, she reasoned, opening up a blank message.

I miss you. Where are you? Lavender. xxx

She selected Richard's name, but hesitated before sending the text. Did it make her sound a little pathetic? Only she really did miss him. Damn. Waking up alone just wasn't the same - there was something that just wasn't right about it. A part of her hated that she'd grown so accustomed to his presence so quickly. She wasn't, she insisted to herself, going to use the word dependent.

Lavender sighed, deleting the message and letting the phone drop harmlessly on the bed as she rested her head, closing her eyes. She wanted to talk to him, but phones just weren't the same. Maybe she was a little resistant to it, but she really did prefer having face-to-face contact with a person.

Sitting up, she leant over the side of her bed to find her comfy ugg boots, pulling them on. She went downstairs and told Caitlyn where she was going, deciding her step-mother would be a little less disapproving than her dad. In her defence, most of her belongings were still at the flat, but even that thought didn't stop her from feeling a little apprehensive before she Apparated down to the building in Clink Street.

She let out a long breath, pocketing her grandmother's wand, the third wand she'd used in less than a month. Lavender carefully opened the door of the flat, not sure whether Richard or Susan were even here. Her heart was beating just a little too fast, tension starting to build across her shoulders. "Anyone home?" she called carefully, stepping inside.

Richard was putting things to right in the kitchen when he felt Lavender pass the wards. The rozzers from the the Ministry had insisted on poking about the entire flat, and it still felt somehow dirty to him. He'd been running the dishwasher all day and scrubbing counters between loads. It had taken him an entire day to set his room to rights again.

"Hey," Richard called softly. He tossed his towel down on the counter and walked down the step to the main room. "Feeling better then? How you doing? Didn't know if you'd want to see me or not."

"Hi." Her breath caught in her chest, so very relieved to see him. She wasn't entirely sure that she'd be able to stay here very long by herself. "A bit better, yeah. Recovering. I think."

Lavender gave a small smile. "I always want to see you. I've missed you."

"Missed you too." Richard opened his arms to Lavender, "I'll not be hugging you until I know you're healed. You can do the hugging yourself, though."

"I'd have dropped by, but some officious paper-pushing prat from the Aurors was convinced I'd been the one to hurt you. Took me forever to get shed of them all. They even wanted to search the place, so if anything is out of sorts in your room, blame them. I'd been desperate to come see you, then they told me you were out of St. Mungo's, and off with your parents, and I figured you'd just wanted to be away from me and this place for a while."

"Thank you," Lavender said softly. "I'm better the one to initiate contact," she admitted, slipping into his embrace. Lavender sighed softly, resting her head on his shoulder and breathing in the familiar scent of him.

"Don't want to be away from you," she promised. "But this place... yeah. Had to work up a bit of nerve."

"I... ah... I'm... sorry I wasn't there... when you needed me. That meeting I'd wanted in Hong Kong came up, and I sent you a text that I'd extended my trip after you texted me you'd be late getting in." Richard took a deep breath. "I made the mistake of assuming you'd apparate into the foyer, never thought about out on the street."

"We can get away from here for a while, if you want. I doubt the Aurors will do any good, but when I pulled the recordings from the security cameras for them, I sent copies to a few people I know." Richard looked into Lavender's eyes. "He'll surface eventually. Do you want him before I get him?"

"You can't be there all the time," Lavender told him quietly. She licked her dry lips. "I should have," she said, pulling back a bit. "But I was hungry. Walked to get food."

"Maybe. I'm not sure I can live here right now, but I want to be with you. It's hard." She looked up at him, gaze dropping awkwardly. She was still finding eye contact a little difficult. "I don't know if I ever want to see him again, Rich."

"Maybe not, but..." Richard sighed. "You're right. I know."

"Some twat from the Aurors says I can't leave the country while they investigate the attack, because you somehow didn't clear my name, and some neighbor said the bloke looked like me. Even though I've provided proof I was in Hong Kong at the time."

He shrugged, "One of the things I was doing on the way back was buying you an automobile over in Calais so you could learn how to drive. I suppose we can get a flat over there for a while just as well. If we do, I won't be able to come back until this blows over. In the mean time, I'm going to file a complaint on the Auror, Savage was his name. I want him off the case and somebody competent appointed. You can include your own statement in the complaint if you want."

"I didn't?" Lavender's brow furrowed. "I..." She recalled being utterly rattled by the interview and Cass comforting her and providing a welcome distraction, but not what she actually said. "I don't really remember my interview very well."

"Can we sit down?" she asked, moving towards the nearest sofa a little. He'd got her a car? They'd only discussed that briefly and she hadn't thought he'd do anything about it so soon. "You think leaving the country will help?" she asked, sitting down.

Richard shook his head. "Savage said something about you not being sure it wasn't me. Probably either took something out of context, or you were still so shocky that you phrased things somehow to make the Aurors questioning you think that. I've pretty well decided there's only a few of them trustworthy any more. One of them may even have lied about what you said. Don't know about you, but I wonder if there might actually really be Death Eaters infiltrating Ministry position, including the Aurors."

"Sorry," Richard said quickly, suddenly contrite. "I'm so cranked up about you getting hurt, and all this the Aurors aren't doing. Sit, can I get you anything? Its more like what would make you most comfortable? Part of the reason they pay me so much is because I travel to meet with customers and talk to them in their own language. I can get by for a while working from home and the London office, providing things don't take too long to sort out."

"Oh." Lavender felt a little ill at the thought. "I hope I didn't get you in trouble."

She managed a small smile at his concern. "I'm fine, you don't need to get me anything." Lavender shifted to get comfortable, mostly so that her knees weren't hurting. "I'm not sure what would make me comfortable. Nothing really does at the moment." She frowned, glancing over her shoulder. "And what about Susan?"

"You, and whichever busybody neighbor said it was me attacked you. Don't think it was on purpose, either of you, but it happened." Richard flashed Lavender a wry grin. "Volunteered to let them use the Imperius and Veritaserum together on me, said I wouldn't resist, if it would clear things up and let me come to see you sooner. Savage said you were under the Aurors' protection and I couldn't see you until I was completely cleared. More likely they didn't want me to find out how badly they'd buggered the investigation."

"Susan." Richard sighed again. "Here's the thing. I told you she'd copped a right attitude when I told her before you were going to need some extra attention. Here you are, hurt, and still thinking of her before yourself. That tells me a lot about the two of you. You've already told me your feelings on the matter, and yet you're doing the 'Puff thing and thinking about the other person first. So I'll ask again, what do you want to do?"

Lavender frowned, looking at him carefully. "You didn't get yourself into more trouble, did you?"

Her lips twisted. "Susan did come to visit me at the hospital," she had to point out. She sighed, tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "The Sorting Hat nearly put me in Hufflepuff," she admitted, quite aware she was straying from the topic and forced herself to concentrate again.

"I think I've mostly coped with the situation by avoiding. At least, avoiding all of us together. Out of sight, out of mind." Lavender sighed. "Do you want me to tell you to stop seeing her? Because I don't want to run the risk of you resenting me for it if things go wrong between us."

"Might have," Richard chuckled wryly. "Savage was being all pompous and Auror-like, didn't tell me you'd been hurt, let me drag that out of him in little bits during the interrogation." He shrugged, "Until then, I was just being my usual smart-alec self. After I found out what had happened, and offered to do whatever it took to clear myself in a hurry so I could go to you, he was an arse about the whole thing - even after the fact that I'd been out of the country was proven. If I thought he was a gentleman, I'd call him out for his behavior. Just have to deal with things by making an official complaint."

"You've been hiding one way or another since the last war, from what you've told me. Is now the time to get some professional help? I'll do what I can to make that happen, if that's what you want. I know we were talking about it before."

He shook his head, "I haven't been avoiding Susan, just not seeing her, even though we both live here and you were gone. I'd made my decision based on what had gone before; what you just said thinking of her before yourself only confirms my feelings. We can get another place, or leave the country, or you can go back to Avalon for a while and I'll stay at my workshop up in Cockfoster's. Whatever you think best, whatever you feel strong enough to do."

"How much do you know about the attack?" Lavender asked warily. "There were the cameras. Have you... watched?" She didn't like the thought of that at all.

"I keep talking about needing to get help," she admitted. "And now I actually need to do it instead of keep hiding. I feel... I don't know. Brittle. And I don't like it." Lavender fiddled with the cuff of her jumper. "I want to go to Avalon. I don't think I'm strong enough to make any decisions beyond that right now. A friend offered me his place to stay, if I need it. Says he hasn't used it much lately. I just don't know where I'd feel safe, you know?"

"I watched the backups after the Ministry boffins pulled the drives off the server," Richard said grimly. "Lets just say the fellow had better hope the Aurors catch him before my friends or I do. I don't think he'd enjoy spending time with me at all."

"One decision at a time is enough for a while," he nodded. "After that, well, you've been around my wards long enough you ought to be able to copy them once I show you the final spells. Even Auror Savage knew it would take some time to force the wards here; I had to come out and go with him willingly because he couldn't bull his way in."

"You tell me when and if you want me around, and where you want to stay, and that's how it will be."

"Oh," Lavender said quietly. She looked down at her hands. Taking a deep breath, she admitted, "I'm scared he'll want to finish what he started."

Cautiously, she reached out her hand for his. Contact seemed to be easier when she was the one to make the first move and could control it. "I want you around. That's one thing I definitely know."

"He might," Richard admitted quietly. "Up to you to get yourself together now. You have it in you to change the ending if you do meet again, finish what he started so he'll never go after anyone, ever again."

Richard held out his hand so Lavender could take hold. It tore at his heart to see how broken she was. "You'll know where to find me when you want to."

Lavender nodded slowly. "I need to try everything I can." And if that meant Healers trying to pry into her thoughts and watch over her for a while then that was what she needed to do. She couldn't let herself feel like this forever.

She looked up at him, managing a smile. "I think we fit together," she agreed. With only a bit of hesitation she shifted on the sofa to hug him, closing her eyes. That felt so much better that she struggled to breathe for a moment, just holding him.

Lavender knew she was crying a little against his chest, so very relieved to be here with him, even if there was a part of her that was terrified to step outside the front door of the flat.

"I love you. If you find this man, please don't do anything stupid." Lavender wiped her cheek with the back of her hand. "I can't lose you."

"You know, I'm wondering if I can get to my birthday without being badly injured or anyone close to me dying. Or do you think that's too optimistic?" If she couldn't fall back on a little humour, what else did she have left?

Richard leaned back on the sofa, eyes still closed, and used the arm he had around Lavender to gently hold her close. She's so fragile right now, best to just let her find her own comfort level, he told himself. Let her do what she wants and don't say anything about the tears.

She sighed softly, watching his face. Even with his eyes closed she thought his expression looked troubled. He'd watched the video of her attack - how many times had he studied it, trying to get a good look at the Death Eater? Once? Twice? More? She could try and block it out with Dreamless Sleep potion, but watching it on purpose was different.

He thought for a moment before turning to Lavender, "Your muggle paperwork is in the works, will just take a little while for them to produce for some reason. She frowned, looking down. She was still holding his hand and gave it a small squeeze. "But after - I don't know. I'm not sure I feel entirely safe here anymore." Lavender sighed. "I don't know if I'm imagining it or what, but bad stuff seems to be drawn to this place."

Only thing I can tell you is that I've sparred with you. Can't ever say for certain, because I wasn't there, but I was surprised to find you didn't do some serious damage of your own before you were taken out of the fight." "He surprised you, disarmed you, and you only had one wand again. I was so... proud, I guess... to see the way you kept fighting back. If you'd carried your little blade up your sleeve, you could have brought him down for good instead of just grappling." Richard made a small gesture and shrugged apologetically, "Its all second guessing now. Point is, you didn't give up, no matter what. Tells me a lot about what's inside you, even if you don't see it right now. It just looked like... I don't know... like you were almost as much afraid of just letting go and fighting dirty still."

Richard thought for a while in the quiet of the room before answering, "I'll wait then. You get set there, and if you find a flat you like, rent it for yourself, if you're going to be there long enough to make it worth while. I haven't a clue, really, how it will all work."

"So you tell me what you need my help with then, right? You do what you need to do by yourself, and we work together on the rest?"

He chuckled softly, "There's a mugle automobile and driving lessons waiting for you in Calais when you get the time, and I'll keep working on getting your paperwork done while you're away at Avalon, too."

"There's some accommodation at the clinic. I'll stay there until I get a handle on... whatever it is that I'm trying to achieve by going there." Lavender knew what she wanted, but right now it was more of a feeling, a longing not to feel so useless and brittle, rather than something that she could put into words.

"Should get my passport soon," she agreed, covering her mouth to stifle a yawn. "Then we could go away for a break."

Richard rocked Lavender gently, settling her so she could doze off leaning against him if she wanted, without his arm falling asleep too. "This Auror with the vendetta going against me says I'm not to leave the country. I'll be sending off a letter of complaint to his boss, and the Minister for Magic as well later. I'll have this resolved or his job, one or the other as quick as I can, and you can travel with me once you're feeling up to it."

"Mmmm. Okay," Lavender murmured, a hand dropping to rest comfortably on his leg. It was surprisingly easy to relax here with him, probably easier than it had been anywhere else in the last few weeks. "Can always stay in the country and just spend time together if we want."

She gave a small smile against his shoulder. "You know, you're really comfortable like this."

"Doze off if you want to," Richard told Lavender softly. "I'll be here with you when you wake up."

"Think I might do that," she agreed quietly, already half-asleep. Yes, she decided, she had very little intention of moving from this spot for quite some time.
