The Players : Lois and Clark
Where : Metropolis, KS
When : February 3rd, 2009
Rating : Its Clark.
Notes : A talk. Its needed right?

Clark was focused on the police blog as Lois was on the phone, but that didnt mean he couldn't hear what she was saying. He wasn't eavesdropping because he'd never use his powers like that. But on this end of the conversation the guy she met in Chicago was asking her to come back to help her with something.

And it involved the Joker. Which made him worry about Lois.

The last time she was in the vacinity of the Joker, Clark had to blur his way over to Chicago to save her. Odds are he'd have to do that again. He didnt want anything bad to happen to Lois. But her suddenly leaving put thier already delayed talk on hold.

They were supposed to meet the night before but Lois got called out on a story and Clark had to do some rescues. So, they both agreed to wait until after work tonight. But with her leaving, Clark decided to take some initiative. He still had no clue what he felt or was going to say. But he knew he wanted to talk to her before she left.

Clark gave her time to get home before going over to her place. He just hoped they could talk before she had to get to the airport.

Taking a deep breath Clark knocked on Lois' apartment door.

Lois had just finished dragging her suitcase to the door and even had her hand on the knob when she heard the knock. She was already in a grouchy state of mind considering the circumstances so another delay was bound to get to her. Lois opened the door with a growl, prepared to tear into whoever it was with the verbal grip of a pit bull. "What?" When her eyes found it was Clark, she found her voice instinctively softening. "Smallville? What are you doing here?"

And then it hit her. They were to have the much delayed 'talk'. Damn it. Why did everything always pile up at the same time?

Clark blinked as she opened the door with a growl. He knew this wasnt the best time to talk to her, but he didnt want to put this off any more.

"I know this is a bad time. You're in a rush to get back to Chicago again," Clark said talking a little faster than normal. He was nervous.

"I just want us to have 'the talk' before you leave and we keep putting it off before we end up forget doing the talk in general and we never get the air cleared."

"Eavesdropping on my conversations, Clark?" She raised an eyebrow at him. "How unlike you."

She sighed and gestured to her suitcase. "How about we talk and you give me a ride to the airport?" Lois ran a hand through her hair and she suddenly felt exhausted. "I didn't mean to run off without an explanation. It's just.. " She was tempted to lie and just say she had a lead she couldn't ignore but if they were going to talk she may as well be honest about everything at the moment. "Xander, he's that guy I met in Chicago, his friend is in trouble and he asked for my help. And now Harriet's gone and that can only mean she probably heard about Bozo the laughing reject too. So now I have even more of a reason to go and help."

"You're three feet away. And I have very good hearing. Doesnt mean I was eavesdropping," Clark said with a small smile.

He nodded. At least they'd have time to talk. Clark picks up the suitcase for her. "So, willing to help a guy you barely know who asks for your help? He must have made quite an impression on you." That and Lois had a big heart despite how she acted. She cared about people and would do anything to help a friend. It was the person Lois was, Clark loved that about her. "So Harriet heard about the Joker and she's willing to go there why exactly," he asked wanting to ease into their big talk and not dive in.

She ushered him away from the door and exited her apartment with a slight shrug. "He opened my eyes to some things I should have seen before." Once the door was locked she had them moving again. "Besides, he's a good guy. I was going to help him with something else but Harriet and I had to leave before hell broke loose.. Which it obviously did anyway."

"If I know Harriet, and I know I don't know her that well considering the grand scheme of things, she's going to do something she'll regret. I have to make sure she doesn't fall under that blanket of lies and delusions he smothered her in." There was no possibly way she was going to let Harley fall without a fight. Not after everything she'd done for her.

Clark sensed she wasnt telling him everything about her time in Chicago. Especially the Xander stuff. But that wasn't important right now.

"As long as you trust the guy. Just be careful." He knew the types of guys Lois tended to attracted were meteor infected people who tried to kill her. Clark would not be able to not worry about her.

"But its good you're looking out for Harriet. She's a good person."

Clark hails a taxi and tries to think about what he's going to say to Lois about their almost kiss.

"I know what you're thinking, Clark." Lois said with a roll of her eyes. She knew her own track record quite well and she just knew Clark would be thinking about that. "But Xander isn't one of the usual Lois Lane Lost Causes. Like I said, stand up kind of guy."

"Harl..Harriet isn't bad. She was just trapped and tricked." Lois doubted she'd ever believe Harley was the evil spawn people claimed her to be now that she'd met her. "I owe her twice over and I'm going to repay her any way I can."

She was surprised by the fact he hailed a cab and it showed. Didn't he drive here? "Smallville, where's your truck?"

Clark couldn't curb the feeling that he would need to make his way back to the Windy City at some point to keep an eye on Lois. Not because he didnt trust this Xander guy or Lois taking care of herself, but because the Joker was involved.

"Its uh...not here. I kinda walked here from the Planet. City you know, trying to reduce my carbon footprint. Im hardly Green Arrow or the Red-Blue Blurr, so gotta save the world the best way I can," Clark said kind of proud how he pulled that excuse out of thin air.

A cab pulls up and Clark opens the door for her and puts her bag in the trunk.

Lois herself was a little worried about what would happen in Chicago but she hid it well. The what ifs wouldn't stop her now. She would see it all through to the end.

She gave him a look of disbelief. "Really. Trying to save the world by your little lonesome of you?" She pat him lightly on the chest and made sure not to let her hand linger for too long despite the urge to do so. Her smile and tone slid into more comfortable territory as she decided to tease him a bit to ease any possible tension. "How noble of you. It's almost endearing."

Clark shrugged. "Even recycle. Its a tough job but someone has to do it," Clark said making a small joke.

Easing the tension. It was gonna take a lot to ease some of the tention between them. The ride to the airport was going to be long but before Lois set foot on the plane, he hoped they'd have whatever it is between them resolved.

"So, how are we going to do this," Clark asked taking a step into the breach.

The tension came back full force and Lois got into the cab. Fabulous. But he had a point. How were they going to do this? She waited for him to settle in beside her before telling the driver to take them to the airport.

"Well there are several ways we can do this. We can dance around the issue and pretend it never happened or you can tell me what the heck you were thinking that night." While it sounded almost as if she blamed him for it, she really didn't. She just wanted to know. She needed something. Confirmation or validation to what she'd been reading into or at least that road sign that said Friends Only Zone.

Clark really didnt know what to say. He didn't want to pretend it never happened. But he also didnt' know what was going through his mind. He was just lost in the moment with her. He didn't even know what she was thinking either.

"I don't know Lois. I mean, you can't deny that there's been something between us for a while now. Especially since we started working together. I'm not sure what we have. I want to see where it goes, but still worried about ruining our friendship."

He really thought Lois would have talked first. She always has something to say.

"What were you thinking that night," He asked in a less abrasive way than she did.

She might have been the first to speak up most of the time, but this was too important and she really didn't want to screw this up. But once he said he wanted to see where it goes she felt almost calmer. She hadn't been completely crazy about things then.

She chewed her lower lip as she tried to decide how, and exactly what, to say. "I was thinking that maybe there was something there." Lois noticed the cab driver giving her a curious look from his mirror and she flashed him a death glare to force him into tuning her out. Once done she continued. "That I wanted to see where it would go and that you did too." She didn't add that any of her confession to Ollie that night. Lois was pretty sure that might be too much to start with.

"There was...if we hadn't been interrupted who knows what could have happened."

In a way, he was glad it happened. He and Lana were able to talk and Clark was finally able to move forward. What would happen next, anything could happen.

"So, guess the question is where do we go form here?"

"If you got a brain in your head mister, you'd kiss her right now," the taxi driver said under his breath.

Clark turned to Lois. He wasnt going to do that right here. "Do you want to go out for dinner when you get back?"

On better days Lois had a somewhat dreamer perspective on what may have happened. But then reality would rear it's ugly head and the daydream would be gone.

She had a couple of smart ass things to say but she stifled them for the time being. Lois also fought the urge to say that it was about time he asked, but boy was it hard. She smiled instead, though she didn't realize that it was a bit of a nervous smile as if the offer would suddenly vanish from the table. "Only if you're buying."

"In my country," the cabby said. "When I asked my wife on our first date. I refused to let her pay. No beautiful creature should pay on a date."

Clark turned towards the cabbie, Ranjit, and shook his head. "Okay..." He turns back to Lois and nods. "And of course I'd be buying. Long as you come up with something to do after."

"Oh, she can come up with a few things Im guessing," the cabbie said speaking up again.

Lois wasn't sure if she wanted to kick the cabby's seat or give him an extremely large tip. It was a toss up and she decided she'd wait on her decision for a bit longer. She did however direct a brief scowl in his direction for his opinion on what she could think of. "Hey, buddy, if you want a tip I suggest you at least pretend you can't hear us in specific intervals."

Her gaze fell back on Clark and she let the scowl fade. "I'll think of something. I'll have time do that while I'm gone." Unless of course the Joker got her but she was pretty sure that wouldn't happen. She was trying to think positive now.

Clark was doing his best to ignore the cab driver. He could ahve done without the random comments.

"Good, just be careful when you're out there. I know you want to help Harriet and that guy you met...but I dont want anything bad happening to you while you're out there."

Especially since he really couldnt keep a close eye on her to make sure she didnt do anything too wreckless.

"Aww, is that concern for me, Smallville?" She was amused and of course more than a little touched by the idea of him worrying about her. But rather than outright say so she took the standard Lois and Clark approach.. by teasing him. "That's so cute."

She was making the situation seem far too light but if she made it anything else it was possible that he could very well be the one person to talk her out of going. "Don't worry. I'll be fine." It was a half hearted try at reassuring him, one she followed up with an attempt to punch his arm like she used to, as if saying it was ok and nothing would change.

With his quick reflexes he catches her arm before she could playfully punch it.

"Yes, that's concern for your Lane," he said with a small smile. "And I know you Lois, just whatever you do, promise me you won't jump into a dangerous situation without thinking it through first. Kind of want you in one peice when you get back."

Lois looked down at that hand of his gripping her arm with an arched eyebrow. The fact that he wasn't going to let her jab him was almost a game changer in her mind. Maybe they really were going to get somewhere when she got back.

She let a smile return to her face and tried to turn on the wattage on it. "Believe me, Smallville, I want me in one piece too." She made no promise of thinking before leaping. After all, she was Lois Lane. She knew how impetuous she could be and how she tended to dive into unknown territory without a helmet.

He couldn't help but notice she didnt promise she wouldnt leap into a dangerous situation without thinking...but then, she was Lois and she'd do it even if she promised.

Its what she did.

"So, Chicago guy...do you really know him enough to put yourself in danger to save a friend of his from the guy that almost killed you on two occasions when you were there last time?"

She was quick to go even before she knew Harriet was headed in the same direction. Lois was a loyal friend, but she didnt know the guy that well.

"I don't know him all that well. But he and his friend, who I'd never even met, were the ones that distracted the Joker when Harley Quinn helped me escape." She made sure to mention Harley's part in her rescue this time, unlike the official report before. Harley was going to be free of him and when she was, Lois wanted people to know that woman had tried to help her at risk to herself. "They got shot at for me, a near stranger. A complete stranger in the sense of his friend. So I owe them."

Clark couldn't help but smile. Lois was a complicated woman, but she was, by all accounts, fully awesome.

"You never seem to amaze me Lois," Clark said as they pulled up to the airport.

Clark got out the cab and made his way to her side and opened her door for her.

"What can I say other than I'm awesome?" She said with a smug grin and bravado filled tone.

Once free of the confines of the cab she went to the trunk to get her luggage. "You coming inside with me or are you going to head back to work?" She didn't pretend to be casual since she was hoping he'd stick around for a bit. She'd understand if he wanted to get back though. Waiting in an airport was one of the most tedious things a person could do.

Clark was about to answer when he heard sirens in the distance. Perfect timing.

"I'll say you have work to do. With any luck this story could get me out of the basement. You'll have to work your ass off to without me to dazzle brilliance across from you if that happens." She said with a chuckle. Lois paid the cabby (it was her trip to the airport after all) and shrugged toward Clark, her bag in hand. She was a little disappointed but it wasn't earth shattering, so she tried to smile though it came out almost bittersweet and nervous. "Yeah, I'll try. Watch your ass around here. You won't have me to save it from all the trouble you know you'll get in to."

He leans foreward and kisses her cheek. "I'll see you when you get back."

If Lois Lane blushed, and she didn't no matter what anyone said, she'd have a hint of it on her cheeks right now. To cover the nonexistent blush, she chuckled. "Yeah well, if it happens you'll just have work on that ambition and journalistic work ethic a bit more to join me. The planet needs more Lane and Kent."

She glanced over her shoulder toward the airport and what she knew waited for her in Chicago. Trauma city her she comes. She turned once more to Clark, "You bet your ass you'll see me. So make sure to be ready to impress me. I want to see the full Kent charm I know you're capable of trying to win me over." She grinned at him and turned on her heel, heading inside the airport.
