Entry tags:!episode 01: darkness descends, character: harry potter, character: molly weasley, status: complete

Characters: Molly Weasley and Harry Potter
Setting: Burrow, 9 am, June 29
Rating: G (this is Molly and there's children involved)
Summary: The grandkids are coming to visit

Molly stood in the kitchen looking out of the window that showed the back yard. Normally, she'd have been outside in the garden by this time on a quiet Saturday morning. She knew the weather in Britain could be temperamental but she couldn't ever remember a time when the sun stayed completely hidden for an entire week. At least she could bake things that would remind her of sunshine. Turning her attention back to the oven, she popped in the lemon tarts and set the timer for about twenty minutes, just long enough to let them bake without losing their smooth texture.

As she sliced the lemon, Molly heard the front door swing open. She knew it couldn't be Arthur as he'd yet to descend the stairs. She laid the knife on the cutting board and wiped her hands on her apron as she turned to exit into the sitting room. "Albus," she smiled as she bent down and grabbed up the young boy who was running full steam toward her. "James, Lily I'm so glad to see you all." She put the middle child down and reached over to pull James into a hug. He was getting almost too old and she knew it would only be a matter of time before he was trying to greet her as an adult.

Molly easily recognized the stress. It was the same tone Harry had used in his younger years when he was getting tired of dealing with the war. The Prophet had reported about the full moon and she knew that with Harry's job there was a good possibility he'd had quite a bit put on his plate because of it. Still, it was not a reason to be short with those who cared about him, especially the children.

"You will be too," she nodded while noting for the first time that the kids were holding overnight bags. Not that she minded of course. "Just remember they're children. Someday they won't be around to run through your house and you're going to miss it more than you know." She didn't add how she had relived every time she'd ever yelled at Fred over the years for his pranks. It had made her wonder if he really knew how much his mother loved him in spite of her almost continual reprimands. This guilt was likely one of the reasons she handled the grandchildren's antics better than she had those of her own children.

Harry sighed. He really didn't want to hear the mother-in-law spiel right now. Now was not the time to receive feedback on his parenting. As for in large part, Harry knew he was a good father. It was something he always worked toward because as someone who didn't have much of a proper family growing up he liked being able to create one as an adult.

"Is that all?" He said just barely biting back the ma'am that would have followed. Harry didn't wait for a response because he didn't want this to be an issue - not in front of the kids. "Alright, you lot be good for grandmum." He made a point to hug each child, although James had gotten away with a ruffle of his hair apparently getting too old for hugs. Really he could tell the kids were itching to do so some of that running that Molly seemed comfortable allowing and he wasn't going to stop them here - not if Molly was only going to undermine his parenting.

Molly wasn't trying to comment on Harry's parenting. She thought he was a wonderful father. She just didn't want the stress of his job to inadvertently cause him to say or do something he might later regret.

When he finished his farewells the children Molly gathered their bags from them and gave a quick directive. "You're grandpa is still in bed. I think you three would make a brilliant wake up call."

Once they were up the stairs and out of ear shot she gave Harry one of her pointed stares. "No that is not all," she tried to bite back the venom in her voice that was threatening to drip out. "I don't know what you've been dealing with at work, but those babies do not need the attitude. They're good kids and it isn't as if running to meet their grandmother is going to undo the fine training you and Ginny have instilled in them."

Harry didn't back down from her stare. In fact he met it and rose it one higher. She might have wrangled the Weasleys, but he wrangled almost two dozens aurors and the people they chased down. "You're correct, you don't know what I've been dealing with at work or even at home. And my children have not had any so called attitude."

He had been careful to keep it away from them. The week had even started innocently enough with Lily having a few bad night terrors to which he had been the one to try to sooth her. Now he was the one unable to sleep through the night. "With all due respect," which was often code that there wasn't respect, "they are my children and they shouldn't be running in the house, even if it is to meet their grandmother. And I would appreciate it if you didn't needlessly reprimand me in front of them."

Molly hadn't survived two wars and not learned a thing about attitude and stress. One thing she knew was that those who denied having an attitude genuinely didn't notice they were having one. Stress tended to put people more on edge than they normally would be and they often snapped at any and everyone who showed the slightest bit of concern.

"You're right, I don't know what you've been dealing with. You have always bottled things up inside and that is not healthy for you or those you are around. They may be your your children, but their my grandchildren and when they are in my house, they will follow my rules. That means they are allowed to be excited to see their loved ones even at the absence of a little proper decorum. If you don't like it call them down here and take them home. If not quit your belly aching and remember who you're speaking with."

If there was one thing Molly Weasley didn't deal with it was disrespect for you elders. She didn't care that her children were grown, they would still give the proper respects to their elders, and if she didn't accept it from her own children she sure as hell wasn't putting up with it from her in-laws.

"I am not looking for an argument," he said. What he didn't say was that it was clear she was. If she knew he was under stress, then why was she making it worse? Perhaps there was a very good reason why he bottled things up. People never understood or they just made it worse. "My only intention was to drop the children off and that is what I've done.

"So I am going to go, and I will see you and the kids tomorrow." He wasn't entirely hopeful, but perhaps by then things could be a little better. Maybe he might even get some sleep or make sense of what was happening. Or even do what this time was meant for and spend some adult time with Ginny. That could be nice. "Thank you for watching the kids," he said his voice not as terse as it had been before. After that his only move was toward the door to leave the Burrow and apparate back to Godric's Hollow.
