Characters: Harry Potter & Catriona Montgomery
Setting: Tuesday, 25 June around 8:00am, Auror offices
Rating: PG
Summary: Harry gives Catriona a new assignment.

All was not well. From the werewolf activity on the full moon, or the increased crime over the past couple of days and even the curious case of the weather patterns something was wrong. Not mention what happened with the hit wizard team. So he had come in early this morning to meet with the Department heads and devise a work plan to make sure the department wasn't going to be surprised by what might be coming. Harry wasn't necessarily a morning person, but today he just felt like his feet were dragging a little.

It didn't help that Lily seemed to be entering a phase where she refused to sleep through the night again. He had rally thought those sorts of sleepless nights were behind him. It was still early when he came back into the auror offices with a stack of new cases in his hand ready to be assigned. On the way in, he grabbed a bottle of water from the coffee area hoping that maybe that would make him feel more alert.

Coming through the office he took mental notes of who was around this morning. Not surprisingly, Catriona was around and didn't have any big cases on her desk right now. "Montgomery," he said catching her attention, "Come into my office when you have a moment." Harry held up the case files in hand so she had an idea what he wanted to talk to her about, but otherwise didn't break stride. He had a few things to organize in his office before he would be fully prepared to meet with her.

She didn't care what people said; it was always a good thing to be at work early and do away with whatever paperwork you had lying around. It also had the bonus to be able to poke your nose into the first case of the day. It tended to be the best ones.

She took a moment to finish up what she was doing and file away the report in its right place - she couldn't stand a messy desk - and then pulled her hair back and smoothed her suit down.

Whatever it was he had for her it had to be good. The last few days had been strange, with more for them to do than usual. She knocked lightly on the door and peeked into the room.

"Sir?"

Harry took a few big gulps of water while he reviewed his notes. It seemed to help his focus a little bit, but he wasn't really fooling anyone. The irony wasn't lost on him that he had only recently commented to Catriona about being the importance of being well-rested and here he was not quite at that level.

"Come in and close the door behind you," he said looking up from his desk. Harry motioned to the seats across from him. It was familiar sort of protocol. "I imagine you have been staying abreast on what's been going on the past couple of days?" Not that everything he knew had shown up in the Prophet or even been made known throughout the department. Up until this point they were still gathering data.

"I have, yes," Catriona said, sitting down. "I take it this is related?"

That definitely shouldn't make her this excited, but it was a while since she'd had a big case, and if this had anything to do with this, it definitely would be.

"Do we have any more information about the werewolf attack? Or was that simply a freak accident? It was full moon after all."

Granted, werewolves didn't tend to be so specific. Venturing into Hogsmeade certainly wasn't their usual behaviour.

"There is a theory that the increase in werewolf activity might be part of a larger pattern developing." Harry slid a file across his desk for her to review. "Based on reported incidences so far, we have not seen this level of werewolf sightings and even attacks since the war." Alone that might not have been a particularly alarming point, but coupled with everything else - it was something. It had to be something.

"We are assigning teams to look into various angles of what's happening and I would like you to take the lead on this one." He paused giving her a moment to look over the skeleton of a case in front of her. "I do realize that this case might be somewhat personal and would understand if would rather pass on it."

Catriona took the file, and skimmed through the first page as Harry spoke. She looked up sharply at his offer of skipping this one however, because if there was one thing she didn't want to do, it was leaving this one unturned.

It may be nearly twenty years since David died, but she was still angry about the way he had been taken from her.

"No," she said quickly. "I would really like this case. The inclusion of werewolves is more of a bonus, really. Gives me yet another reason to solve it." She managed somewhat of a smile. "I'll even do my best not to take off their heads in the meantime."

It was only somewhat a joke. Barely at all, actually. She never joked about these things.

"Good. You'll of course need to liaise with Werewolf Support Services and Registry and honor any protocols they have for the meantime." He took another drink punctuating what would come next. Because the next part was the part he wasn't so sure about. "I also want you to work with Robins on this one."

Demelza Robins was quite often a headache he tried to contain as best that he could. Harry was constantly forced to add demerits to her jacket and if not for the fact she got the results she probably would have been out of the department a long time ago. And this case had hit home, affected their own people in the department in a time when they were likely going to need everyone on board.

"Of course," Catriona said, nodding along. She knew her views of werewolves were, while warranted, a bit over the top. Noone would fault her for defending herself against a transformed werewolf, but if it was a person, not yet transformed? No, not so much.

It was, however, the next sentence that made her want to stomp her foot like a five-year-old. "Robins?" she said. Do I have to? she didn't say. "Are you sure that's a... wise decision? It's a sensitive case."

Well, it was better than to say straight out what she was thinking, which was 'she's bloody bat shit crazy, you know that, right?', at least.

Rather than sigh like he wanted to, he lifted his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose. Catriona might not have said it out loud, but Harry had heard the real question. And his mind supplied it in James's voice trying to get out of some basic chore. It lasted only a breath or two while he composed himself.

"I am aware that Robins can be difficult to work with, but I am hoping that you might serve as a positive influence on her." Which was Harry saying, yes, I know she's not entirely sane, but this week you get to babysit. She needed to be paired with someone because on of her own - well, he didn't even really want to consider that. "Is working with her going to be an issue?"

She didn't sigh. She didn't even roll her eyes. Catriona knew better than that, really. Even if she really, really wanted to.

"No, it's fine," she said. "We have different... methods, that's all."

She was already trying to figure out how the hell to keep Demelza out of it as much as possible. If she played her cards right, maybe she could push her into doing something far far away. Take long lunches. Not talking to witnesses.

Definitely not talking to witnesses.

"I'll get started right away," she said. "I've been looking forward to something -" Exciting. "- important."

"Fantastic," he said. His tone didn't quite convey whether or not he actually thought the situation was fantastic, but it was a semi-polite and appropriate thing to say.

"Let me know if there are any big issues that arise or delays in your investigation." That was mostly his job now, assigning cases and making sure that other departments or organizations didn't get in the way. Well, and now he was going to be orchestrating all investigations regarding a potential pattern. "I expect to be updated regularly."

As far as Catriona was concerned, the only issues that could arise in the investigation was Demelza fucking something up, but she didn't say so. Of course.

"Naturally," she said, her brain already working out how to work the case, where to start and how to get the best result.

"Thank you, sir. I will keep you updated."

"That is all," he said to dismiss her. "I will leave you to it then." That was one case down and still a few others to make sense of enough to actually warrant investigations. And still there was this feeling that something was happening again. Even fifteen years later he still sometimes felt like at any moment the war could start again.

It was that sort of vigilance that made him good at his job. Sure he might have gotten into the program because of what he did when he was younger, but even that wouldn't have simply had him promoted to head of the division at twenty-seven. And while many of his fears had been unfounded, now there just might be something real to start worrying about.
