Who: Padma Patil and Lisa Turpin
When: May 28, 2000, evening
Where: Padma's flat
Status: In progress
Rating: PG
Summary: Lisa takes Padma up on dinner.

Padma wasn't expecting a guest and her attire attested to as much. She was currently curled up on her couch, glad that Oliver had gone up to his Gram's for the weekend. Not that she wasn't glad she could be a help to him and give him a save haven, but his nervous pacing liked to drive her insane. If he wasn't asking her to check the wards, he was studying all her books on wandless magic (as he was rather convinced they'd only tracked his wand not his magic, which explained her easy travel on a broom.) So, curled up in a t-shirt of Oliver's that had gotten mixed into her wash and her Puddlemere shorts, she sat on her couch reading up on creating portkeys and wondering if she'd be able to perform all the magic herself.

Lisa hadn't bothered answering Padma's owl. By time the owl arrived, Lisa would probably have arrived only shortly after the letter. So, she snuck away from the house for a bit while Aloysius was in his office working.

She flooed to Padma's flat quickly, before an elf could spot her. She stepped out from the fireplace and sighed loudly, her voice full of mock disappointment.

"Miss Patil, if you had intended on having a sleepover, you should have let me know. I feel horribly overdressed."

Padma looked up in a startle manner, afraid it was Oliver and something had gone wrong with Emilie. He'd told her that George had come up with a plan to get her from France. Oliver wasn't completely certain when it was taking place, but he'd been on edge since the Prophet article about the new agreement with France. Nothing was fool proof these days, even with brilliant blokes like George Weasley at the helm and so Padma was on edge as well. She knew if anything happened to Emilie - well, she didn't want to think about it.

Padma was soon smiling though. Merlin, she was glad to see Lisa. She'd been so worried that Li wasn't going to forgive her. It was silly, really. They'd had worse fights, but still, Padma was worried about every little things these days. She stood quickly, jumping really, and gave Lisa a huge hug.

"I've got some pajamas you can wear? Are you staying? Are you hungry?"

Lisa leaned into the hug and patted her back, shaking her head as she did. "No," she said, pulling back. "I am only staying for a bit, and yes, I am hungry," she smiled softly and pulled back more, and finally out of the hug, moving to sit down on the couch and sighed.

"You could give me bread and water, for all I care. I could even get it myself if you don't feel like it- What are you reading?" She pulled Padma's book into her lap and looked through it. She knew why she had rushed in as she did and plopped down on the couch as she had done. She needed to constantly occupy herself or risk feeling guilty for completely going against Padma's advice and wishes.

"You're ridiculous. Here, put this on." Padma grinned and grabbed her Puddlemere hoodie from the back of a chair, tossing it at Lisa. "At the very least, you can pretend to be casual while you are here." Padma shufled intot he kitchen, grabbing some fruit and setting a black of cheese to slice while she got down two wine glasses and a bottle of white wine she'd slowly been working on. She brought everything back on a platter and set it in front of Lisa. She picked her book back up with a smile.

"Just doing some light reading. Did you know there are over hundred of spells used in modern portkey making. Not all at once, mind you, but there are so many variants. It's quite a bit to take in." Padma set the book on the coffee table. "So, how's the primordial wonder today? Have you had him carbon tested? It's a muggle dating method. I'm sure Aloysius shares some of the same genes as his cousin the tyrannosaurus."

Puddlemere? Puddlemere. Lisa's thoughts immediately trailed to James (as they tended to do these days). And just as quickly as she thought of James, the connection was made. Not bothering to consider any other alternative, Lisa was very certain now why Padma had been so against her even thinking James was attractive. Lisa set the sweatshirt on the opposite end of the couch, wanting nothing to do with it.

This wasn't fair at all. She just had to fancy the man that Padma was dating, and he just had to- wait. Wait. He had said he wanted to kiss her, and he had been so very affectionate that day- Lisa nearly groaned out loud. He was trying to cheat on her! To save her own skin, though, Lisa couldn't say a word to Padma. Was the guilt worth not having Padma terribly upset with her?

Her thoughts were once more confirmed when she saw Padma come out with the wine, fruit and cheese. Puddlemere clothes. Oh, no. Faced with no other immediate alternative, Lisa did what she could. She got mad. She reached for a glass of wine and took a big gulp. She was quiet for a long time, drinking her wine and pouring more into her glass when she needed it.

Finally, she had had enough. She sat back on the couch, her glass in one hand, fruit in the other, staring off at the fireplace. "Tell me something, Padma," she said, eating a piece of fruit.

Padma watched Lisa in a confused manner. Well, she'd thought her father fancied Puddlemere? Well, if she didn't want to put on the sweatshirt, she didn't have to. But Padma would have none of her whinging of being over dressed.

She took her own seat and grabbed a slice of fruit as she curled up on the couch across from Lisa. She watched her friend drink her wine and watched the drinking turn into downing and refilling. A look of concern came over Padma's features and she was sure she'd hit a sore spot with the terrible dinosaur joke. Padma was just about to apologise when Lisa spoke up.

"Hmm?" Padma questioned, and though it was an inarticulate response, she'd been caught off guard. "Pardon?"

Lisa waited a second more, took another sip of her wine, and finally spoke. Her voice was casual, of course she didn't want to give away the real reason why she cared. "If you were with J- Mr. Crotchup, why didn't you just say so?"

After a second, she looked over at her, right at her face, waiting expectantly for her answer.

"I beg you're pardon!" Padma screeched. Did Lisa know James was Oliver? Had she found out? Oh bloody hell and Hufflepuff's great, bouncing- "Where on earth did you get that idea? I wouldn't do that to you, tell you not to fancy him because I fancy him! For Merlin's sake, Li. I do not fancy James." At least, not in nearly a year and especially not now. He was proving a great thorn in her arse these days. Besides, she hated the way he snored and slept with his mouth open and she absolutely loathed his dirty clothes about the apartment and the way his gear smelled after a game - not that any of it was relevant now. Padma was fuming at the accusation against her character, but mostly because she felt guilty and most certainly not for the reasons Lisa was suggesting.

Padma's screeching caused Lisa to take another sip of wine. She'd forgotten Padma did that. Finally, shes sighed and pointed at Padma's clothes. "He told me he likes Puddlemere," she said. Even as she said it, she began to feel stupid for her reasoning. "And the letter. Plus, he said you might take him as your date to that bloody Ministry gala." She set her glass down on the coffee table and sat up, hoping that Padma was telling the truth and she really wasn't with him.

"You're jealous!" Padma said in realisation, pointing a mad little finger at Lisa. "You fancy him and you are jealous." Padma shook her head and stood up in defiance, moving about a bit in frustration. "Li," Padma started but then stopped, sighing heavily and giving her friend a cautioned look.

"You know better."

"Well, obviously I don't, then, if I fancy him," she said, standing up as well. She folded her arms over her chest. "And so what if I do? It's just a small fancy, I'll probably be over it in a week, and it's not as if he knows." she plopped back down on the couch and sighed. Lying to Padma was terrible, she knew, but she didn't want to have to hear the lecture that came with her knowing what had really happened.

"I just wanted to know whether I should feel bad for fancying the man you're seeing." Well, that was at least true.

"I am not seeing him," Padma confirmed in slight huff. "And I don't want you to think I'm just trying to be a terrible stopper to any fun in your life but I'd just rather not see you hurt. James is nice and kind and sweet - I know all of this, but he's not going to be your tutor forever and-" Padma sighed and hung her head a bit. "And I can't stop you. Just don't be stupid about it, alright? Merlin, you're stubborn."

"He's very smart, too," she added, taking the wine and pouring some more into her glass. "And witty. He's wonderful company," She smiled a little bit to herself, then took a sip of the wine, hoping Padma didn't spot it.

"Anyway, I'm sure I'll be over him in a week. You have nothing to worry about."

Padma looked doubtful. She sighed heavily but took a seat none the less, taking the bottle from Lisa and topping her glass off. "Just be careful, Li, that's all I ask." Padma gave her a half-hearted smile before leaning back into the couch.

"You could both use a friend, if anything," Padma said after a moment, trying to rationalise the situation in her own mind. "Perhaps that's what the both of you need. I know I'm not their for either of you nearly enough."

"He is a friend," she said after a moment. "But that's all I expect he'll ever be. Like you said, he won't be my tutor forever, and unless he knows Italian, or wants piano lessons, I doubt we shall ever speak again."

"Well, at least we can be miserable old hags together. We'll drink lots of wine and complain about men until we are eight hundred." Padma smiled slightly, trying her best to make an effort. Lisa may think she could date whoever she wanted, but the truth of the matter was she's fallen for Luc, gotten herself confused with Oliver and now was slightly attracted and becoming friends with a very nice young man, who was most definitely gay. No, Padma was just as without a decent long-term relationship in her life and likely to be so for quite a while.

Lisa just sighed and looked away, seeming to think about something before finally moving to stand up.

"If I stay any longer, I'll be stumbling and slurring my words," she stood up and stretched a little, closing her eyes for a moment. "I'm going to be a lush, I can just tell. I'll need to be, if I ever intend on erasing every memory of my wedding night," she made a face and moved towards the fireplace. "Owl me?"

Padma nodded, standing quickly to follow Lisa to the floo. Lisa always left too soon and Padma was filled with regret at her leaving.

"I'm sorry I was a bitch," she blurted, looking terribly uncomfortable and sheepish and every inch of her five feet small. "I promise I'll owl. Don't forget, either."

"I won't. I'll see you soon, okay?" she said, trying to ignore the apology and save Padma the embarrassment, as well as her. She took a handful of the powder and dipped under the fireplace, calling out the name of Aloysius' mansion and disappearing in the green flames.
