Narrative
Who: Padma Patil and Theodore Nott
When: May 27, 2000, late in the evening
Where: Nott Manor
Status: In progress
Rating: PG
Summary: Padma floos over to thank Theodore (profusely.)

Padma threw her only sweatshirt on in a hurry. It was a faded and thin royal blue Puddlemere hoodie and the only one she'd ever been convinced to wear. (Oliver had done some rather pleasant convincing.) She was wearing the matching training shorts and she wouldn't deny that she had a very limited casual wardrobe - at least so far so far as Muggle wear was concerned. She had some casual robes, but all robes seemed dressy to her at times, and she certainly wasn't about to wear her grandmother's idea of casual. Really, not that it mattered. It was Theo and unless the man was perfectly and appropriately dressed at all times of the day, hopefully he'd be in casual attire as well. He'd better be, or else she'd feel incredibly underdressed.

She quickly flooed to Nott manor, unable to keep the delighted grin from spreading over her features as she stepped out of the floo. She bit her lip, trying her best to school her face into a serious mask as she looked about for Theodore. Still, despite her best efforts, the corners of her mouth kept turning up no matter how hard she tried.

Theodore was in the ballroom, setting up a projector. He had brought one with him and found some more purely by accident while trying to get somewhere through Muggle London. He was struggling to wire them all to one battery and wished he understood more of the technology. Truly batteries, projectors and wires were all a little beyond his realm of knowledge. At the moment he was half inside the wall trying to see what had gone one with the wiring that he had set up that morning.

Nibsy greeted Padma with a smile, behind her floated various decorations in black, white and gold for the ballroom. "If the kind Miss will follow me, the Master is in the ballroom," she said with a little bow before leading the way from the front parlor to the room in question. Music filled the room, in the corner several instruments were playing themselves, the person Theo had hired had charmed them to play this morning and they'd been doing it ever since, much to Theo's irritation. He was rather sure he'd not be using them for the party.

Nibsy snapped and the music stopped. "Bloody..now they stop playing," he complained, sliding out from his spot, knocking the paneling that he had removed to the ground. He offered it a glare before Nibsy announced Padma's presence, and added that she had stopped the music.

"Why didn't you stop it, oh twelve hours ago?" he said with a shake of his head as he brushed off his clothes and walked towards them. "Nibsy enjoyed the music, sir, it is so quiet in the manor."

"Of course, you know, I think I understand why father always complained that you had too much initiative."

Nibsy just smiled and left, decorations bumping along behind her like chicks following a mother.

"Padma, good to see you,"he said with a smile, focusing his attention on his guest. "I apologize, I'm rather informal I'm afraid,"he added, motioning to his tee and jeans, that looked a little worse for the wear, paint and dust the only decoration. He had run into a few problems, switching the house from funeral ready to party ready. His father had charmed random things and sometimes panels would refuse to change color or banners would refuse to stick. Not to mention the muggle things that he had brought in, which he only half understood at best.

Padma shook her head, brining her hand up to cover the laughing smile that was struggling to take over her face. She finally gave up and laughed softly, stepping towards him with a wide smile.

"You're the worst, you know. Absolutely the most charming, considerate and wonderful man I've ever met. I'm not sure how I can stand you really." She laughed before he could protest, she hugged him forcefully, wrapping her arms about his neck and planting a large kiss on his cheek. "Thank you so much for the dress, you cad!" She laughed and gave him another solid squeeze before stepping back and smiling brightly, no longer able to contain herself.

"And I'm very much over formality today, as you can see by my attire."

"It took a lot of training, just ask my grandmother and my old roommates,"he said with a half smile, before being surprised by the hug. He was thrown a little off kilter by the easy expression of affection and almost ruined the moment, but then he laughed clapping her lightly on the back before she released him. Hugs were definitely not something the Nott family spread around, he had hugged his little cousins but other than that touch in general beyond a handshake was like crying in public, an unexcusably excessive show of emotion.

"Well then, I'm glad for that," he said glancing over her ensemble with a smile, "I wouldn't want either of us to feel awkward. So, shall we go see the dress?"

He motioned for her to follow as he headed out the double doors, "So, Puddlemere United?"

"Oliver thought it'd-" Padma faltered and glanced at Theo. "We used to... see each other, to put it politely. He got them for me. I have to confess, it's the only thing like it in my wardrobe and it is dreadfully comfortable." She hoped she'd played it off well enough. Oliver was asleep on her couch, at least, he'd said he was going to sleep when she left. She'd been in her night clothes when she'd received Theo's floo, sitting comfortably in her bed and talking to Oliver, who'd been sitting on the foot of her bed.

She'd told Oliver to throw her the first outfit he saw from the closet and it'd been his idea of a joke. She'd been too excited over her dress to protest, but now in retrospect, she wondered if it had been wise. Her slip had been unintentional and she realised all to quickly how easy it would be to betray Oliver to the wrong person. It wasn't that she didn't like Theo, he was proving to be an easy and good-natured friend, but the risk of betraying Oliver to the wrong person could prove dangerous, so Padma just did her best to play off her stumble.

"It's a tragic blot on my scholastic record of lovers, I have to tell you. I should hate for it to get around that I dated a Quidditch player."

"I promise I won't tell a soul," he said with a smile, holding a hand over his heart teasingly, "Slytherin's honor." He led the way up the stairs, hand brushing over the railing, then led her to the left. The dress was pinned to a mannequin in a room covered with various fabrics. He had also had one outfit designed for Ms. Everett on her request, it stood in the corner only the basics of a design.

Padma's dress however glittered in the middle of the room, turned to starlight by the faint light coming from the window, he waved the lights on with a flick of his wand. "Well, here she is."

Padma tried her best not to squeal, she really did. Lisa would have been the firs to tell anyone that Padma had a bad habit of getting shrill. Padma did her best to stifle her exuberant excitement and her urge to hug Theodore again. She turned to him, smiling brightly, moving in an excited manner, almost a dance of sorts.

"Oh, Theo! I don't know what to say! It's lovely, it really is. I don't deserve it at all, I just-" she broke off her rambling and flashed him another smile. "Thank you."

"You're welcome," he said, surprised by the genuine emotion welling up at the sight of her happiness. He hadn't expected to find friends in the Britain that had been the scene of such a strange and often miserable adolescence. "It's the least I could do for your help and.. willingness to.." he shrugged, glancing away, embarrassed, "Thanks for overlooking our school prejudices. You're a breath of fresh air in a place so choked up with idiotic rivalries and judgments."

His eloquence further embarrassed him and he cleared his throat awkwardly, "Well anyway, feel free to take a look. If you don't mind I can have the tailor drop by your place and do the fitting."

Padma flushed prettily and turned her gaze to the dress once more, less he notice. she turned back to him sooner than not, however, and gave him a smile.

"Thank you for doing the same - and thank you for being rather amiable. I won't lie and say that didn't help me befriend you. You're an absolute charmer - and the dress didn't hurt, either." She turned back to the subject at hand and stepped in for a closer look. "It is lovely, isn't it? The tailor can stop by whenever is convenient. I'm free most days after work."

He gave a wry smile, "I'm glad you think so. I'm afraid not everyone shares your opinion. But then I couldn't have known Draco and not come out with a few barbs to toss about." Theo moved into the room, picking up a pincushion that lay on a chair and turning it over in his fingers idly.

"I hope so, my friend was rather ecstatic to be designing a dress for someone of your skin tone. She loves darker tones, says they complement colors much more than those without pigment like myself." Theo covered up a yawn, before nodding, "I'll tell her so and have her drop by some time, she'll be happy to meet you."

She smirked at his yawn before shaking her head. From the look of the decorating he'd been doing when she arrived, she was sure he'd been at it the entire day.

"You should get some rest, Theo. Don't work yourself ragged just before your birthday. You've got to be awake to enjoy it, you know."
