Narrative
Who: Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger
When: May 26, 2000
Where: Hermione's hide-out
Rating: PG, possiblly
Status: In progress
Summary: More Ron/Hermione awkwardness!

If things had not been awkward enough, Hermione caught Ron delivering a letter from Harry. She wasn't supposed to know that he was there, and that proved to make their short conversation seem to drag on for years. After asking him for food for Crookshanks, he left, and Hermione was left to hope that he returned quickly. Crookshanks really was running low on food, but she knew that though Ron didn't particularly like Crookshanks, he wouldn't try to harm him.

Hermione was laying on her bed with Crookshanks, reading an old book of hers. He had just settled down after chasing around Hermione's conjured birds for awhile. She thought it would keep him happy and not make him so restless. It didn't really work, but she did it nonetheless for some form of entertainment.

Crookshanks was curled up at Hermione's side and had just closed his eyes. Hermione turned the page of her book and sighed. This was how most days went- cleaning and reading. What else was there to do?

Ron nodded, though Hermione had already turned away. "Not sure what's new actually. He wouldn't tell me," he admitted. She wasn't looking at him, so Ron couldn't gauge her reaction; but he tried anyway. "He wants to tell you though. He wanted you to come by the shop actually." Ron didn't add on that he thought it was a horrible idea no matter what precautions she might take because nothing would be enough for him to believe she was as safe as he'd want her to be. No, he wouldn't say any of that. Instead he dawdled along behind her taking it all in.

Ron took a few steps and set himself up on the counter beside the bag of food. From his perch, the kitchen seemed more like the Burrow than he expected.

Her? At the store? She furrowed her brow and glanced over at him just in time to see him sit up on the counter. She gave him a disapproving look before taking the bag and finally just storing it under the counter, for lack of a better place to put it.

"You know very well that I can't be seen in Diagon Alley. If he needs help, he'll have to send me a letter through you. If he doesn't want you to read it, there's a charm to make it only legible to a certain person." she said, closing the cabinet door. She looked back up at him, waiting for his answer.

"Don't tell me," Ron frowned in agreement with her, "he just asked me to pass along the message that he wants to talk with you about some project he needs your help on. I imagine he was thinking I could take you Side-Along by Apparition or I could get you some Polyjuice or something." He shrugged, offering the best solutions he could. He knew that Hermione felt the same way he did: that they would love to do whatever they could for George until he seemed more like himself--if that was somethign he could even do anymore. But it seemed that this time George was asking an awful lot. "He was really cryptic," Ron added lamely.

She didn't know what came over her, but she soon found herself shaking her head and looking over at him. "I will try, but the entire thing doesn't sound very safe, even if I changed my face or apparated. The last time I tried to get into Diagon Alley, there was an Auror at every turn,"

Perhaps she was dying to get outside, or perhaps she truly was curious to see what George needed. She didn't know, but she knew that no matter how much she told herself not to go, she'd end up going out there. She sighed softly and settled next to him, leaning her back against the counter.

"I'll try." she sighed, looking over at his leg absentmindedly.

He agreed with her. For once in his life, he agreed with her without qualification. At her last words, he grimaced because he knew they were coming. But he paused for a moment and thought aloud, "Or you could be an Auror." He nudged her inadvertently with his knee, but it was a thought. A bit of Polyjuice, one of his own red hairs, and his wand-- Hermione would know best.

He looked at her now, wondering what he would extort out of George in return.

"I've had my fill of Polyjuice potion for one lifetime, thank you," she said, though there was a smile in her voice. "I know some advanced Transfiguration, I can try that again. I always thought they saw past it, though." She turned around to look at him. It wasn't so awkward now, and she was glad for it. She smiled softly at him then looked away.

"It always seems like that," Ron agreed, nodding. He took on the voice of his least favorite and most pompous instructor, "'Rule Number One of Disguise: confidence!'" He laughed at himself and leaned his elbows on his knees. "Wasn't so great at that bit, actually."

He felt the energy in the room ease slightly, and he was glad for it. He met Hermione's look to confirm the feeling. So she wasn't mad at him any more. "You have to tell me what's he's working on. He was acting all weird about it."

She rolled her eyes at him, though she couldn't hide the hint of a smile that played on her lips. "Honestly, Ron, I'm not telling you what he's up to. If he had wanted you to know, he would have told you himself."

"You better be lying," he half-kidded, deliberately bumping her arm with his knee. "I'll find out anyway. They're paying me to figure out how to figure things out, you know." He saw she was smiling and knew he'd won over.

"You'll have to come see mine and Harry's place if you do go." Suddenly Ron was rather excited about the idea. It was a silly, frivolous thought, but the idea of Hermione hanging about like everything was normal was too tempting to pass up. Like something had turned out right.

"I don't know," she said, looking up at him. There was something apologetic in her eyes, letting him know she wasn't trying to stay away on purpose. Was it too risky? Would Aurors be looking out at their flat all the time? She didn't want to think she was important enough for them to do something like that, but she still had her worries. She would have given anything to see Harry, and their flat.

It was sort of funny, she thought bitterly. She had imagined that, perhaps if things between them went right, her and Ron would have a flat together. She smiled a little at the thought and looked away, towards the doorway.

The reservation in her voice sounded like resignation, and Ron gave his own wry grin. "No, I know," he replied. There was... a lot going on. In the expression on Hermione's face as well. He mused on it, unable to decipher the nuances beyond her own sadness at being stuck here.

"I'll try," she offered, smiling a little, trying to be reassuring. Hermione was never very good at comforting people, if the disaster with Lavender and her dead rabbit had been any indication. After a moment she reached for his hand, acting on a whim. It was probably a bad idea, and she realized this just in time. She pulled away just before her hand touched him, and she tried to play it off like she was brushing something off the counter.

Ron looked over and opened one arm to see what she was swiping at, but he couldn't see anything. He shrugged inwardly. If she was going to be in the Alley, then she might as well come see the place. Granted, probably better to be there shorter. Damn George. And why couldn't he know? After all, it would be Ron's doing if she showed up there in the first place.

But he waited quietly, taking in the comfort of a real kitchen. He didn't even keep dish towels folded, though Harry seemed to be a bit excitable about that. "I guess we'll have to see what George is on about first."

Hermione didn't think it would be very nice of her to tell Ron what was going on with George, really. How could she betray George's trust like that? She wondered if she would be able to hide it from Ron. She would feel bad for keeping it from him, anyway. Oh, why her? What could he possibly need from her?

"You know," she said after a moment. "He's probably only making a big deal of it to get to you. I'm sure it's nothing at all, just some help he needs on a project."

He hadn't seriously thought of it that way, but the passing thought seemed to gain credibility when Hermione said it. "Maybe," Ron conceded. If it was a product, which George had suggested it wasn't, he'd find out about it eventually. He was feeling so informed these days between living with Harry and working in the Ministry, it was strange to be denied something for once. He never had thought of it that way.

"I'll let him know I told you anyway then."

"Thank you, Ron," she said, looking up at him. She looked away a split second later. She felt silly for thanking him. It was as if she were admitting defeat, or that she needed someone's help. It was almost as hard to do as admitting she was wrong.

"For everything. I must have said it before, but- well, you're- thank you."
