The work in the aftermath of the battle was massive and Merri shouldn't have had the time to take off to go to the opera, and so he hadn't bought the tickets in the end. Still, no matter how hard he tried to work through everything he had to do, he found that in the long run, he couldn't. His mind kept going back to images he'd rather forget, his heart felt heavy with emotions that he didn't want to feel, and his body still ached from the tears he tried to hold back. He could not navigate his thoughts around the memories of last night -- the face of that woman -- enough to be of any use to the Council or the Guild. With that, he returned to his room and thought about stealing away to the Love to check up on the captain when he saw Ari's message on the network and, remembering his promise to her, decided that perhaps he could spare a couple of hours to go to see her in the opera after all. It might be his last chance for a while, and music always had the effect to steal him away to a world, a reality, that was not his, and maybe afterwards, he would be in a good enough state to see the captain again. Then, in the morning, he would be in a good enough state to try to get some work done. He quickly changed out of his normal clothes and into a nice, navy blue shirt and dark pants and left the tower, hoping that he could make it to the box office in time to buy any remaining tickets. As he emerged from the crystal in the Theatre District, he kept his eyes away from the direction of the Tenements. Then he remembered that he had wanted to bring Ari orchids, since it was tradition. But he was ten minutes from when the time the show was to start, and he had no time to make the stop. Fortunately, The Marriage of Fedoro was not yet sold out. Merri didn't even mind that he was off to the far left side of the stage in the balcony. He'd seen it before, and he was here to lose himself in the music, after all. The performance was, as always, spectacular, and Ari of course was perfectly sublime. Merri was the first in the balcony to rise for a standing ovation. Then he rushed out of the theatre as soon as the final curtain fell and darted towards the stage door. He told the security waiting there his name and that Ari was his friend and was expecting him, and after some deliberation they finally let him through, pointing him in the direction of her dressing room. If there was any chance for his mind to wander back towards the woman from last night, the spectacle backstage took it away. Merri wandered towards Ari's room with wide eyes at all the actors and actresses and musicians who were in various states of colorful undress. The costumes seemed a lot brighter up close. Some of their eyes lingered on him, and he bashfully smiled at them as he excused himself through, feeling completely out of place and hoping that they weren't thinking ill of him. Finally, though, he made it to the dressing room. The door was closed. He cleared his throat a moment before knocking, feeling suddenly quite naked without a bouquet of flowers to give to her. Hopefully, she wouldn't mind. Maybe he could take her out to coffee after instead. |
