The sight of Theo occupying the kitchen was not uncommon, not even as a squire. True, that in his early days it was a means of discipline for his poor attitude than it was by his own choice, but he'd learned to grow accustomed to the tasks and, eventually, even quite fond of cooking. More than that, it was a constructive way to cool off from a day of work and training. Better it was to focus his mind on small tasks, like chopping carrots and onions, than it was to let himself simmer in anger for the rest of the evening. In any case, others had reason to benefit. The mess hall was open for use of everyone (and tonight it was Theo's turn), and it was filled with large, rectangular wooden tables and rows of stools and chairs. He'd brought the supplies with him early that morning, and so it was little problem for him to pick up after his shift, making himself right at home over a large stove and an industrial-sized cooking pot. The smell of hot stew wafted through the guildhall, tempting whoever was brave enough to approach and take some for themselves. Theo busied himself by slamming knives and spoons and cutting boards around, grunting and cursing and moving around the kitchen with his usual amount of force and purpose. Just as he was considering the stew to be near to done, Theo opened up the oven and brought out several loaves of bread. Kneading and punching dough was also an effective task, and the baked goods placed out onto counter were crusty and a fine golden brown. He looked everything over with a grunt of contentment. To hell with the others, Theo thought, he could probably manage to eat it all by himself. |
