What: Vandalism and robbery.
Where: The Necrohol.
When: Before the daylight hours, Saturday.
Rating: PG.
Note: Those in the Cathedral will hear of this within the hour it's discovered, the EKP will be notified in the morning, and the notice left by the Cardinal can be seen by the afternoon.
The necrohol was known to be a sombre place of final resting, and the holy knights and mages who kept vigil over this place were unaccustomed to any great number of disturbances. Aside from stray, ignorant youths wandering around where they ought not be, typically for the sake of some ill-conceived prank, they expected little trouble during the course of a typical watch—aside from those perilous and ancient tunnels of the catacombs below. Surprises topside were rare indeed, and so the men and women sworn to holy vows were shocked and horrified that evening to discover the act of vandalism. The mausoleum belonged to an old, noble family of the city. The well-known name of Hardin was carved in bold letters above a door which was now damaged severely and hung open in an arrogant display of the crime. Saying a prayer to Faram, the guardians of the Necrohol wandered inside, a soft and unearthly glow of a mage's staff lighting their way into the crypt. Little had been left untouched. It seemed that whoever had trespassed here had smashed everything apart in their sight, the once-detailed carvings of marble and stone strewn in crumbled piles on the floor. Someone ran to wake one of the priests. A report would need to be made and the authorities would need to be contacted. The holy knights went to search the grounds, while the mages sought to number the noble dead who had been so violently disrespected. However, as they looked further in each place, all were horrified to discover that their vandals were robbers as well, not only destroying such an ancient mausoleum but stealing away the dead that were housed there. In their place was left a dark-stained glyph on the floor, a carefully wrought circle of ancient letters, none of which the mages recognized. By daylight, the clergy were in an uproar. Never in countless decades had anyone attempted something nearly so bold on hallowed grounds. Restoration to the building would take great time and resources, but it was the slumber of the dead that had been the utmost violated, and their missing bodies were not to be found. There were no tracks nor broken gates, or any other clue as to how and why the crime had been committed save for the single, ominous glyph. After every detail of the crime scene had been taken into account, it was the Cardinal himself who wrote a public statement, left for the parishioners and the public at the doors of the Cathedral. These evil crimes would not be tolerated, it said, and whoever had committed the act must turn themselves in willingly should Faram forever condemn their soul. |
