Ari was late to the traditional backstage mingling with key patrons, and she knew it, but the handkerchief now in her pocket had her smiling as she slipped into the greenroom used by the chorus, now filled with cast members and smiling people in formalwear. The director gave her a displeased look across the room and she shrugged and mouthed, personal problem, which appeared to be enough to get him off her back. It probably helped that she had blown up nothing tonight and had generally done everything that could possibly be expected of her. Once her appearance was noticed, she was immediately approached by a wealthy merchant couple who handed her flowers and offered lengthy congratulations before departing. As they left, she noticed a familiar face and her polite smile became a bit more genuine. “Esther!” she called. Never Lady Glass, not with this patron. “How lovely to see you. You haven’t been waiting for me, have you?” Esther flushed when Ari noted her, content at the warm greeting - she was a patron to Ari, but she liked to think of the other woman as a friend on some days. Somehow, even if it was silly in her parent’s eyes. “I made a donation as a thank you for your wonderful performance.” Yeah, she had been waiting but that was all worth it. A bunch of flowers was offered to Ari, “I can’t stay very long but I really wanted to well, congratulate you and everything.” Her cheeks were steadily becoming redder, “I tried to get my fiance to come but he is very busy, but he would have loved this too, I’m sure.” “Next time,” Ari said easily, though privately she wondered how a man could be too busy for a once-a-year event, especially considering Esther was clearly so invested in the theatre. Well, nobles and their relationships were very strange. It was one of the many reasons why she was relieved not to be one. “Well, I am glad I caught you before you had to run,” the bard added. “I could use a bit of balm on my ego after falling flat on my face before our visiting Duchess and half the people in the lobby just now.” Though her rather smug smile suggested she was not so torn up about it. Her fiance was very different, Esther didn’t mind coming alone to these events - there were plenty of friends who did appreciate it, like Mathieu. The flowers were offered to Ari, the gesture was timid, star-struck worship in her expression because Ari was amazing on stage and Esther appreciated it. “Yeah, I’m glad I did too. It - I really wanted to congratulate you in person, just sending flowers seems a little impersonal sometimes.” Esther laughed quietly. Ari took the bouquet and said, “You’re a darling, as always.” Sometimes, Esther seemed very young, though the difference in age was not really so pronounced. It came from being sheltered, she supposed. “And these are lovely,” she added, sniffing at the flowers now in her arms. “I shall make certain to put them in a prominent place.” Her flat would smell like a greenhouse for the next week or two, but she would take home the prettier arrangements -- it had been some time since she had been able to take them all. “Now,” she said, “before you go, why don’t you tell me what you considered to be the best part of the show...” All actors enjoyed being told they were wonderful, after all. And Esther’s heartfelt praise would certainly be passed on to Ari’s colleagues at the afterparty. |
