The first day of double rehearsals had been unpleasantly reminiscent of hell week (the thought of what actual hell week would thus be like did not bear thinking of at all). Ari had dragged herself from the second theatre at the end of the night wanting nothing more than coffee, food, and sleep, in that order. The coffee had been taken care of at the shop on the corner and as for the food, she’d made her way to the crystal and from there to a small Kerwonian deli she particularly favored when she wanted something warm and filling. Blintzes, she thought, with mushrooms and spiced meat and sour cream. A pile of them, all hers. Maybe another one with condensed milk or jam or both. How did normal people (her mind flitted to the councilors she knew and then away) work such hours all the time? She was exhausted and starving. The interior of the restaurant was warm and welcoming, smelling of things baking. She made her order to the tall blonde woman behind the counter before taking a seat on the bench near the door. A small glass case held a pile of oblong little pies, still steaming. Potato? Cabbage? She couldn’t tell, but in her present state, everything sounded delicious. Perhaps she’d take a few home to have for breakfast. Just as she was considering the merits of that idea, the door swung open, admitting a gust of winter wind and a familiar dragoon. Ari’s mood couldn’t help but lift a little. “Well, this does seem to be quite the popular spot this evening, doesn’t it?” |
