While St. Namorados Day had, a great many centuries ago, begun as a smaller religious observation and day of feast (some continue to speculate that the holiday goes even further back in history, possibly to those obscure times of Kiltia), through the years its meaning had transformed drastically, to eventually become the event observed at this modern Ivalician age. Associated greatly with romance and the poetic ideas of courtly love, St. Namorados Day is often associated with sweethearts. Regional customs across Ivalice have been known to differ, but for Emillion, decorations of hearts and doves and cherubs had become a commonplace sight this time of year. Whether this served to infect a sense of warmth and affection in the citizens, or simply became another matter to cause a sense of ire, depended entirely on the individual. But avoiding the festivities swarming the city during this particular day was known to be something of a challenge. Merchants, peddlers, bards and entertainers of all variety were notorious in trying to capitalize on St. Namorados Day and bring in as much gil as their added efforts could provide. The business of sending chocolates, flowers, and other gift-giving thrived, as admirers sought to win over affections. Many popular restaurants throughout the city offered specials for couples, while others offered their venues for singles in hopes of playing match-maker. The Theatre District was especially abuzz with holiday spirit, offering a sizable variety of shows and performances based around the themes of love and romance. From museum showings to culinary classes, special events in the city were diverse and eager to draw money and attention from those of all walks of life. Of course, for those less than interested in St. Namorados day, a notable amount of tavern specials were also offered as well, perhaps as a gesture for those looking to dismiss such attempts at frivolity entirely. |
