Laughter (Frank/Alice, R)
Title: Laughter
Pairing: Frank/Alice
Rating: R
Word Count: 250
Warnings: None.
Disclaimer: Not mine. JKR's.
Summary: There is always laughter.
Notes: Written for the [info]erotic_elves October Flashfic challenge.

There is always laughter.

They never take sex too seriously. Franks catches Alice up and swoops her onto the bed, nuzzling at her neck and unbuttoning her dress and they're both laughing, laughing. Alice pins Frank against the kitchen counter and they smile into their kisses as they sink to the floor, and moments later a giggle rises up because Frank accidentally-on-purpose finds Alice's ticklish spot as he runs his hands down the curves of her waist.

Alice doesn't understand why Neville is such a serious baby, surrounded as he is by so much laughter and so much love. He stares up at her with his wide, solemn brown eyes and she laughs and tickles his belly and calls Frank into the room to cast sparks and pull faces and make the baby laugh.

But Frank takes this as an invitation to make his Alice laugh, too, and the baby won't mind if he can't see, so they roll themselves up in the quilt and there's a moment then with no laughter as Frank pushes forward and Alice bites her lip, but then he's in and thrusting and Alice breathes and smiles up at him and contented sighs replace the laughter. And little puffed breaths, hah-hah-hah, replace the sighs, and Alice can't help but laugh at the wonder of her life, at the faces Frank makes when he's coming, at the sensations that overwhelm her until she can no longer do anything but drift.

When Alice awakes, Neville is crying.

Wah. A joyful ficlet on the surface, but so sad in light of what happens to them later. *sighs*

:( Yes, indeed. I have to say I love the beautiful tragedy inherent in this pairing.

Oh, Frank and Alice... *sighs* I love the image of baby Neville being serious... and the ending of course with its foreshadowing, :-(.

♥ Thank you! I started out writing happy fic, actually, but I just can't help myself when it comes to this family...

Wonderful! I’m so glad I dared come here, although I usually doubt I can enjoy reading anything rated R or higher for sex. You describe the fun Alice and Frank are having so vividly that I can’t resist identifying with her here.

And the baby’s presence and his role – the contrast he offers – makes this tiny piece of fic special. I had to stop and wonder with Alice why the baby would not giggle, too. Could it be that both parents still focused too much on their mutual relationship, so that they seldom interacted (in their fun and loving way)primarily with the baby. I can’t help compairing them with my Lily, who’d never bear the thought of having sex (or miss James at all) when having her baby right there to hold and his eyes to stare into.

Thanks so much! I'm glad you gave this a chance, despite its high rating.

I think Frank and Alice very much doted on Neville, actually, but I've definitely met some very solemn babies and I can't help thinking Neville might have been like that. Alice and Frank can make the baby laugh, it's just not his default setting, so to speak. :)

I’m not sure there can be a default setting of laughter in a baby (at least not in a newborn). The basic temperament determines how easily the baby reacts to anything, but all the rest seems to derive from interaction.

I suppose this fic made me think too much, but I find it interesting to interpret it in such a way that the happy young woman is not aware of any shortcomings in her interaction with the baby. I choose to assume that she, too fully devoted to her man, doesn’t really succeed in eyecontact with the baby and in consistent care of him. The last sentence supports me in this interpretation. You don’t write that she wakes up exactly because she hears the baby start to cry and reacts to his needs; you give the impression that when she happens to wake up, he’s crying.

Perhaps the reason for my reading like this is that I consider this piece so excellent that it could work as non-fanfic, and I wouldn’t like the baby’s solemnity to be a coincidence. When this is read as fanfic, the solemnity and crying can refer just to this family’s fate.

I hope you don't mind my babbling.
