The birds had been quiet all morning.
Percy knew that when the birds were quiet—not silent, they were never entirely silent, not with the ruffling and rustling they were constantly doing—that something was going to happen. The birds knew more than Percy knew, or would ever know, about the world, knew it instinctively, in their little hollow bones, felt it in their feathertips. They couldn't vocalise it, so they remained silent. And waited.
And Percy waited with them.
He waited while he read his Daily Prophet, waited while he drank his tea, waited while he cleaned the cages. Waited, and not a single customer came into his shop until nearly noon, when Harry Potter walked in, holding his son by the hand.
Percy blinked at the pair of them.
"Hello," he said.
Harry gave Percy a gentle smile, and that same smile crossed James's face.
"I like you," said James, his voice high, improbably babyish. Percy had forgot how young the boy really was.
Percy laughed into his teacup, a laugh as gentle as the smiles on the two faces in front of him.
"I like you, too," he said. "What can I do for you today?" He spoke to James, not to Harry, and he crouched down, knowing that to the boy, he was a giant, all long legs and thick specs peering down.
"My daddy wants an owl," said James, "And I want a budgerigar." He stuck his thumb in his mouth, then spoke around it. "Blue."
"Please," came Harry's voice, and James echoed Please, and Percy nodded solemnly.
"I think I have the perfect bird for you," he said, "Shall we go and see?" James nodded, and Percy rose, his knees creaking very slightly.
"And have you the perfect bird for me as well?" asked Harry playfully. Percy met his eyes for a moment that might have been a little too long, then he nodded and swallowed hard and turned on his heel, leading the way.
