Newcomers, newcomers
So things have gotten exciting around the Elric apartments again. Or at least around the clinic, and Edward swears someday he will get a new building up for the clinic's exclusive use. Just... he has to figure out whether he'll contact the Gate about repairing his heart or not. He really needs to do that someday.

But in the meantime, he's got a new resident that's there for the duration of his treatment under Winry and Russell's practiced care, and there's also a new alt who's going to be staying at the clinic for awhile until she recovers from her surgery enough to either go home- assuming they find her portal before that- or to a place of her own while she waits.

Of course, Edward doesn't know about that second new sorta-resident yet. He's about to, as the phone to the home line rings. Caller ID says "Russell Tringham - Cell," which tells him there's something up at the clinic. Edward grabs the extension, waving off his little brother who'd started to reach for it first. "Hey, Tringham, what'd you need?"

She hesitated. Oh dear. Open mouth, insert foot. Oh dear.

"I'm not certain I should be the one to talk to about this, in part because I'm worried I'll be in trouble if I say more than others think I ought."

Maybe some backup here wouldn't be bad.

"Would you like to meet William?"

((feel free to say no. XD and even if yes, Delilah's not going anywhere, just... ahhhhhhhmotherlaaaaaaand.))

Even though logically, she knew the parent in common must be their father, Elizabeth was not ready to see it confirmed by looking at this mysterious older half-brother. Because if it were confirmed, then she knew that somehow, their father's notes were right, and if they were right, then oh god, what happened to their mother?

She shrank back, shaking her head. "No, that's okay. I think maybe some more sleep would be good."

She paused a moment, then lifted her head. "Has anyone heard about finding my brother yet?" Al. Having Al there would make everything okay again.

Whew. Bullet-dodging for the win.

"Not yet, but Edward, my brother-in-law, has left to follow up on some methods, and I would be very surprised if we haven't your way home by tomorrow, or at the very latest, the day after."

Tomorrow. Tomorrow seemed forever away. And the day after seemed impossibly long. Elizabeth whimpered, but nodded in surrender. Nothing she could do about it, and she knew it.

"Do you know any other stories?" she finally asked in a tiny voice.

Delilah reached over and stroked the girl's hair back. "I do," she said softly.

"Once upon a time, there was a land somewhere far away, where the Church held tremendous power. The head of the Church was a Bishop, and this man, he was dark, evil, and corrupted by his own quest for power. But the Bishop had one weakness, a weakness in the form of the most beautiful woman in all the land, whose heart matched her physical beauty, a woman named Isabeau.

"But Isabeau wanted nothing to do with the Bishop, and fell in love with the gallant Captain of the Guard, a proud man named Navarre. The Bishop flew into a rage, and swore that if he could not have Isabeau, then no one would, least of all Navarre. But he did not curse either of them with death, for he knew that this would be only too kind.

"By day, the former Captain, estranged from the land of his birth, rode the land on a dark horse, in the company of a loyal hawk. By night, Isabeau roamed the countryside, solitary save for the companionship of a black wolf. By day, Isabeau was a hawk, and under the light of the moon, Navarre was a wolf. Two species which mate for life, facing their nights and days with no memory of the time in their other half. Forever together, and yet eternally apart."

Elizabeth liked the sound of this story. No personal connections, and a good set up. She was too drugged to read, so having someone who seemed happy enough to tell her these stories made Elizabeth grateful. She'd have to do something for Delilah once she was feeling better to thank her.

Enjoying stories like a little child she may be, interrupting constantly like one she was not, instead staying quiet, watching Delilah and listening intently.

"For years they traveled, bound by their love yet separated by the Bishop's curse, until one fateful day, a rather enterprising young thief managed to escape the city's dungeons, and was saved from certain recapture by Navarre. The thief, a young lad known only as Mouse, began to travel with them."

Quietly, Delilah continued to tell the story of Ladyhawke with ease, for that had rapidly become one of her personal favorite movies while she was laid up in bed, pregnant with Joseph, and unable to do much more than watch the television or study.

"And when the old monk heard the bells, and the night without a day, and the day without a night did not come, he thought that Navarre had failed. But before he could carry out the Captain's wishes, the sun became obscured, and the hawk transformed once more into the beautiful Isabeau.

"The hall fell silent as she strode in, dressed in peasant rags but still the beauty was unmistakable. The Bishop turned away, unable and unwilling to look upon her, but at the point of Navarre's sword, he was forced to confront them both, looking upon them both in the flesh, and the curse was broken.

"The evil Bishop breathed his last, and up in the sky, the moon passed on, restoring full daylight to the world. In the sunbeams in the hall of the old cathedral, Navarre and Isabeau were once more united, together forever, and never apart. And they all lived happily ever after. The end."
