We gotta get outta this place
((Locked to [info]wortcunning, [info]supermans_dead, and [info]lost_myself for the first part. Locked to [info]wortcunning, [info]haganenomore, and [info]puddle_of_grace for the second part.))

Winry deposited her bags from the market on the kitchen counter of her apartment once she got home. "Sheska, can you put the groceries away?" she called into the spare room that acted as a library for Sheska's many, many books. "I have to get to the clinic, we've got a patient looking for some prescription refills."

She grabbed her cellphone while she talked, punching speed dial for Russell's cell.

With that, Winry headed out, something the mun has no intention of playing out, because she's done enough self-threading tonight. :Db

This leaves Russell completely alone to interrogate his pris- I mean patient.

((Mi~ a needle pulling thread~))

Russell stayed seated for a few moments, finishing writing something down first, then stood to walk over to the bed where Elizabeth was resting. He checked the I.V. and the monitors, then pulled a pressure cuff out of the holder and wrapped it around her upper arm before turning on the machine.

Elizabeth opened one eye as Russell fussed around with the pressure cuff. She wasn't totally succumbed to the effects of morphine just yet, but she was getting there.

She forced herself to not shy back, but she couldn't quite keep the shame-faced scarlet coloring from her cheeks. "At least this part of a hospital stay doesn't change in different worlds," she said quietly.

He smirked faintly, keeping an eye on the automated inflation of the cuff and waiting for the digital results. "The technology's improved though." He eyed her, then smirked a bit wider. "For example..." He reached into a drawer and pulled out a hand-held device, which he switched on, then placed on her forehead, drawing it across before pulling it back. "Your body temperature's about average, which is a good sign."

Russell showed her the digital read-out of her temperature. "No more glass and mercury bulbs stuck in your mouth or other assorted places."

Elizabeth looked at the thermometer, taking a second longer than she might've normally needed to register what she was seeing. "No wonder Winry took this job," she said. "She has lots of new toys, I see."

"Oh, you know it," Russell said, grinning as he put the thermometer away and jotted down the readings. "Your blood pressure's still on the low side, so take it easy. You're an Elric, so that means I have to specify what 'take it easy' is defined as. No unscheduled, unapproved strolls around the place."

He fixed her with a stern look. "And if you think you get fussed at back home, well, if you pull that here, there's the Ed who runs this place, his brothers, his husband, his wife, Winry, and that's just for starters. And we do have the manpower to put a watch on you around the clock if needs be. Understood?"

Elizabeth whined. "I have to get back, though. Al's going to worry himself sick. And he'll find a way to be physically sick, even with that armor."

A couple things managed to parse past the morphine. "... his brothers? Plural? Yeah, whose kids were those downstairs?"

"I realize telling an Elric not to worry about a sibling is a lost cause, so I won't say don't worry about Al," Russell said. "However, we have a lot of resources in this place we can put to good use to find your world if that Ed can't locate the door, and we'll get to him."

The mention of the kids made him crack a grin again. "Oh, you met the twins then? Did Emily talk your ear off? Those are Brian's girls." He was quiet for a long moment. "Brian's... a long story. Yes, he is Ed and Al's older brother. I'm... not certain how things were in your world, so I can't say if he's there or not. There's a few worlds where things are extremely different from mine, and that's probably a topic best left for when you're feeling stronger."

Elizabeth made a face. "An older brother, huh? Like I'd need a second one. Al keeps forgetting he's supposed to be younger."

The rest of what Russell said slowly worked its way through the durgs. "Emily... suppose that's where my middle name came from. Always wondered why Mom and Dad would give me such horrible initials."

Russell snerked a bit. "Your mother didn't realize the origins of the name, but it had become a bit of a family name from her side. Emily and Annamarie's mother is actually a distant relative of hers." There, that's a safe way to put it.

Ed knocks on the door to give warning that he's come back before poking his head in. "Is it safe for me to come in without feminine screaming and things thrown at my head?"

A whiny groan was Elizabeth's response to that, but not much more.

Russell looked over and smirked. "Safe enough, at least. Come on in, and tell us you have good news."

Now that he knew he wasn't about to wander in on Winry checking Elizabeth's ports or something, Ed re-enters the room with the loaned scrubs under his arm.

"Good and bad, I suppose. Good news is that I now know exactly where she came in. Bad news is that there wasn't anything there for me to go through, so it looks like her portal is one of those annoying ones that likes to do the 'now you see me; now you don't' thing on both ends."

Here, boys, have an emotional teenage girl.

Elizabeth lifted her head as much as she could- which wasn't much- and looked at her male alternate from behind the blankets. "It's gone?" A moment later, that finished processing in her mind. "You mean I can't get home?"

Between the stress, the pain, the hormones and the morphine, the boys now had a crying teenage girl to deal with. Have fun, you two.

Russell sighed and dragged his hand down his face before putting his hands on his hips and looking at the ceiling. "Wonderful," he muttered, then turned his attention to Elizabeth while gesturing to Ed to hold on a moment.

"Calm down," he said quietly. "You can get home, you're not trapped here. It just means that we either need to look for another door, or force that one to re-open. It's not the first time we've had to do that. The Ed who built this place, he was separated from his Al for almost two years by the time he found the Nexus, and it took a few months after that to find a way to force a door to open to Amestris, because none existed. The door to your world is there, it's just being finicky about when it opens, and we can fix that. It might take a couple of days, but it can be done, and you will get home. I promise you that, all right? And if needs be, I'll have all the Eds around here drop by and promise that too, because you oughta know better'n anybody what an Elric promise is worth."

That whole mention of a 'couple months' didn't do much towards calming her down. She gave Russell a rather pathetic look. "A few months?" She shook her head. "I can't be here that loooohgod." She put a hand over her eyes. "Okay, no shaking head until the morphine wears off."

"There's a lot of reasons why it took that long, none of which I suspect apply at all here, so I really doubt it would take that long. At any rate, we will get you home, all right?" Russell said, then glanced back to Ed. "You want to try your hand at convincing her, being an Elric and all?"

Oh hell. Crying alt. How was he supposed to handle this?

"I think I remember seeing someone I know use something to help someone figure out their own co-ords when their own portal decided to hide from them, although I didn't see where she got it from. Maybe I can try to find out?" Ed ventures. "From what I understand it's easier to figure out where we're from now. We'll get you back there. Really. It's just a matter of when. And it won't involve that fucking Gate, if that helps any."

The rational part of Elizabeth's brain knew this. It really did. But the rational part of her brain was rather overloaded, trying to deal with the insane hormones racing around her body at the moment, and it wasn't functioning well past the morphine, either.

But she took a deep breath, forcing herself to settle down at least a little bit. "I don't want to be stuck here alone, though." She sounded utterly miserable. To be fair, she's almost in a drugged sleep on top of those hormones. Give her another five minutes, she'll be out like a blown engine.

"You're not alone, but I know, it's not the same as having your brother here." Russell studied her critically, quiet for a moment. "Just close your eyes and breathe, and remember, you're in Elric hands now. It'll be fixed, we promise."

He watched her for another moment, then stepped over to Ed and lowered his voice. "Ask around and see what you can find about getting that open. She's been through enough right now, and the sooner we find her brother, the better off she'll be."

Ed nodded in agreement. "The thing I was talking about is some little handheld thing, so it shouldn't be too hard to get hold of one. From what I could tell, it basically just checks the person for whatever information it requires to... pinpoint the proper reality and tells you what to pop into the PIN."

He drew in a breath. "Also, before I forget again, she knows Mom's here. She asked right after I explained to her what alts were."

Russell listened and nodded slightly at Ed's explanation about the coordinate finder, then grew still. "She does, huh?" he whispered, and glanced over his shoulder at her. "That might be the best thing for her in the meantime. Thanks for letting me know."

"You're welcome. Don't forget to give her warning first if you guys decide to bring Mom over, because she basically said she wasn't sure if she could face her. Oh, and here, I don't need this stuff anymore," Ed said, shoving his armful of loaned clothing at Russel.

Winry returned about then, and nearly walked right into Ed's back when she did so. "You're back already?" Sigh. "Let me guess, it dead ended?"
