We gotta get outta this place
((Locked to [info]wortcunning, [info]supermans_dead, and [info]lost_myself for the first part. Locked to [info]wortcunning, [info]haganenomore, and [info]puddle_of_grace for the second part.))

Winry deposited her bags from the market on the kitchen counter of her apartment once she got home. "Sheska, can you put the groceries away?" she called into the spare room that acted as a library for Sheska's many, many books. "I have to get to the clinic, we've got a patient looking for some prescription refills."

She grabbed her cellphone while she talked, punching speed dial for Russell's cell.

Elizabeth whimpered, shaking her head. She really didn't want to admit to it, especially not with an alternate of Russell there in the room. She glanced past the blankets, looking for how close Russell was.

Well out of earshot. Sigh.

"Abortion and sterilization," she answered in a whisper. "We found the .9% failure for the hormone control. And I'm an automail, I couldn't ... you know a woman with automail is in danger of miscarriage anyway. So they sterilized me while they..." She shrugged as she trailed off.

Winry had been afraid of that. "Did they do a full hysterectomy?" she asked. "And let me guess, Russell was your partner?"

Elizabeth nodded in response. "Not even Al knows about the first part. He thinks it was just a female problem that cropped up. Wasn't surprised, Mom had troubles after her second pregnancy, too, and we didn't know why, so he just thinks I inherited whatever it was. Only the colonel and Riza know. Can't tell Russell, it'll break his heart. Especially after Xenotime."

Winry knew about Xenotime, or at least as far as how things went in her own world, but that was enough to make her inclined to agree with Elizabeth's assessment of his reaction.

Well, hers was also a lot older, and uninvolved. "Elizabeth, would you like me to have Riza come up and assist me, or would you be okay with keeping Russell on hand? I'm going to let you know I'd prefer to have Russell helping me. He's the most experienced at this."

Elizabeth made a face. "You're all so old." Reluctantly, she sighed and shook her head. "He can stay. He's not the same, and I know Riza. She won't know what to do since she doesn't know me anyway."

Winry decided not to take offense at the 'old' comment. This time. "All right," she said, standing up. "You keep resting, I'll go talk to my nurse. Thank you, Elizabeth. Hopefully, we'll have your brother here soon, and no, we won't tell him. That's for you to do, but I don't recommend trying to keep him in the dark forever. Elric males are a pain to deal with when you do that kind of thing."

She checked the saline drip out of habit before walking back over to where Russell is. "Well. She says you can stay, so we don't need to get Riza or Delilah, at least."

Russell glanced up at her, then back to Elizabeth for a moment before returning his attention to Winry. "All right," he said quietly. "What do you need me to do?"

Winry sighed. "Right now, we'll just keep an eye on her. She's in shock and it's no wonder. She shouldn't be up and around yet. She had an abortion and a hysterectomy. After the morphine wears off, let's see if a dose of hydrocodone will be enough, see if we can't get her off the morphine."

Russell's eyebrows went up quite a bit at that. He knew very well by then how automail worked, and the hazards that came with it for female patients, so the two procedures didn't precisely come as a surprise, nor as a shock.

However, given her reactions, he was having some serious concerns and questions about the circumstances leading up to it. On the plus side, he did take some measure of relief in the awareness that at the very least, she didn't appear afraid of him, or else, he might have to excuse himself, catch up with Ed, and go choke a bitch. He might take pride in being an asshole, but then, there's being an asshole and then there's that.

"I see," he said quietly and glanced at Elizabeth again. "So for now, you're just going to have her rest and recover a bit more?"

"I think that would be best," Winry said, nodding and sitting down next to him. "And to answer your question that I know you're wanting to ask, apparently your alternate was her partner, and before you have to wonder, they were being smart, but nothing's infallible. And nobody but her commanding officer and Riza's alternate know about the abortion part. Which would be why she's acting like an Ed with a secret."

"I see. Yes, thank you, that does answer quite a bit." He paused, looking at Elizabeth again then back to Winry. "I'm going to assume they met at, or at the very least after Xenotime, then?"

"I got the impression they must've met there," Winry confirmed. "She acted like Xenotime was something pretty awful, bad enough she doesn't want to tell your alternate because it'd break his heart."

"I don't know," Russell said. "If she were anyone else, then I'd not doubt it, but with the automail? It'd kill one or the other." He hesitated, studying Elizabeth for a moment. "Honestly? I think it'd bother- if it were me in those shoes? It'd bother me more in the long run not knowing. If they find her Al, I'll see if I can't find that alt of mine and talk to him myself, maybe?"

Winry chewed her lower lip, thinking about it. "This seems like the kind of thing she oughta tell him herself, don't you think?"

She may not have been an Elric by blood, but she definitely was still an Elric, with that sort of 'thinking face' she had going on. "Of course, it'll take some work, convincing her to say anything... think you can do that? You can speak for your alternate better than I could."

"That would likely be best," Russell said, "although if he acts like a stupid shit about it, I'll be happy to bitchslap a bit of common sense into him."

Winry beamed, patting Russell's cheek affectionately. "I knew we could count on you to be another Elric," she said, giving him a cheeky grin.
