We gotta get outta this place
((Locked to [info]wortcunning, [info]supermans_dead, and [info]lost_myself for the first part. Locked to [info]wortcunning, [info]haganenomore, and [info]puddle_of_grace for the second part.))

Winry deposited her bags from the market on the kitchen counter of her apartment once she got home. "Sheska, can you put the groceries away?" she called into the spare room that acted as a library for Sheska's many, many books. "I have to get to the clinic, we've got a patient looking for some prescription refills."

She grabbed her cellphone while she talked, punching speed dial for Russell's cell.

Oh dear. One of those.

Winry leveled a patient look at him. "Ken? You are my patient. That along is enough to make you worth it. There are very few people who I would consider 'not worth it', and they have special places in the Hall of Elric Family Enemies to have earned that disregard from me.

"You're probably not used to this kind of behavior from doctors, and that's fine. I've read about the medical history of your world, and quite frankly, it's appalling how bad it was in your time. But you're neither in your world or your time. You're in the Nexus, here and now, and now you've got a doctor and a nurse and a pharmacist who take their duties under those titles very seriously. And two of us are alchemists beyond that, and the alchemist's creed is 'Alchemist, be thou for the people'. So as long as you're here, you can get used to and accept that we care, and you can't stop us from that. Now, if you want to refuse treatment, we can't do much about it, but I really would rather you didn't, because I can't and won't stop caring. Not now that I've started to treat you."

Ken fought the urge to go 'Yes, ma'am' in purest military fashion. He hadn't been on the receiving end of a talking-to that extensive since Manx and Birman back at Pang Nuan. Even then, they had also just given him his meds and sent him on his way--they were too busy tending to guys with limbs blasted off to worry about one pilot's mental state, as long as he had something to make him fit to fly.

He'd had Ran for that back then, anyway.

"...next thing I know, you're going to take a page from Mare's book and try to browbeat me into calling my mother."

Ken sighed and smiled slightly. "...sorry. Not quite used to that."

"Well, get used to it, because there's no patient in the world more difficult than Elric over there, and if she can keep him in line with putting up with all the fussing-over and top-line medical care, nobody else stands a chance." Russell grinned broadly.

"I am not that bad, Tringham," Edward protests. "And you can't hold anything before the soul bond was fixed against me. That doesn't count."

Winry gave Edward a look. "Ed? You have been a miserable patient to deal with since you were six years old. I know, I was there. Just because by comparison to how you were without the soul bond, you're not bad, doesn't mean you aren't a pain in the ass."

Ken was obviously missing something, and completely unsure of what it was. He felt kind of like he was at a tennis match...

Well, just sitting and watching for now seemed to be the best option.

Edward razzes Winry, proving that despite their age, they're still siblings picking on each other. He glances at Ken. "Welcome to the Elric family. Come on, let's get you settled in an apartment. They're pre-furnished, and there's some non-perishable food already stocked in the cupboards."

"See what I mean?" Russell said to Ken with one of his signature smart-aleck grins as he jerked a thumb in Ed's direction. "So relax. You're in the best of hands this side of... of... well, not to be an arrogant prick or anything, but anywhere, really."

"I'm used to that...I flew with Schuldig, after all." Ken snorted and shook his head. Now there was an arrogant prick if he ever saw one.

Edward gets very quiet. "Schuldig? Red hair, royal asshole, thinks everyone's his playtoy?"

Ken glanced over at Edward, brows furrowing curiously. "Red hair, and yeah he's a bit of an ass, but he's also a good friend, and he never means to actually hurt anyone. Not sure if that one time counts, he was drunk as a fucking skunk. I'd trust him with my life...I have on occasion."

At least, Ken's Schuldig isn't a complete irredeemable asshole. God forbid he runs into one in the Nexus. It'd probably break him in half.

Edward doesn't say anything for a moment, then sighs. "Must be some sort of doppelganger effect, like with Al and Alfons." He shakes his head. "Sorry, there was someone else that went by that name here in the Nexus, and... well, let's just say I didn't like him much."

Ken frowns, and pulls his battered photograph out of his wallet. Schu's face wasn't covered by the worn folds, out of habit he brushed his fingers over Omi, the Lieutenant Commander, and Ran's faces--lingering a bit longer over the last--before offering the photograph for inspection. Schuldig's bright orange mane and cocky grin would be instantly recognizable. His arm was slung around the neck of a younger Ken, hair ruffled every which-way, who was trying to push him away and failing.

"Five years ago, I wouldn't blame someone for not liking him. He mellowed out a lot after he got shipped home and met his wife." And more after he had kids. Ken sometimes felt like he barely knew him anymore.

Edward takes the photo carefully, eyeing it. "That's definitely what he looked like," he agrees. "But I think it's an entirely different person, probably a doppelganger effect. For one, I got the impression he was from a more modern time than Vietnam. For another, he was an assassin of some sorts."

He hands the photo back to Ken.

Well, that just made his brain-gears grind to an epic halt. "...an assassin."

Okay, so he'd shot Nagi that one time. And he was a soldier. But Ken didn't think that Schu had ever directly killed another human being...that was generally Farf's job as door gunner.

Nexus, wtf.

"Yeah, the bastard amused himself by trying to seduce an alternate of my younger brother, who was just barely legal and definitely didn't look legal, just because he knew it drove him crazy and he wanted an excuse to be an ass."

He shakes his head. "Anyway, it's a case of look-alikes, it looks like. Sorry."

What the fuck. Ken just stands there blinking, rather disturbed by the whole thing. Schu wasn't gay. He also wasn't a pedophile.

"...this place is fucked." The thought of one of his best friends--one of his only friends--being such an irredeemable asshole was something incredibly disturbing.

"Welcome to the Nexus," Edward says dryly. "Anyway, come on, there's room in the second building. Second floor okay?"
