We gotta get outta this place

Winry deposited her bags from the market on the kitchen counter of her apartment once she got home. "Sheska, can you put the groceries away?" she called into the spare room that acted as a library for Sheska's many, many books. "I have to get to the clinic, we've got a patient looking for some prescription refills."

She grabbed her cellphone while she talked, punching speed dial for Russell's cell.

"Yeah. The guy's probably got a serious dose of shell shock, like what we saw with the soldiers from Ishbal and Liore," Russell said as he reached for a pharmaceutical directory on the shelf.

Winry sat down at the computer, pulling up the chemical formulas of the different medications for Ed. "So... PTSD, anxiety for certain, looks like one of those medicines was a sedative, so probably sleeping issues. I'm pretty sure we can trade that out for a more standard sleeping pill, something a little lower dosed, and see if we can't work him down to Valerian root so he doesn't get too addicted."

She ran a hand over her face. "I don't even want to know how badly addicted he already is. We may have to try to convince him to stay here and go through detox." She made a face. "We need to get someone in this building to study to be a psychiatrist for us, Russell, you know that?"

Russell looked over at the books stacked up on his desk, then looked at Winry.

"Maybe we can talk William into adding an MD to his name?"

Winry laughed. "He's got the charm for it, doesn't he?"

Something on her screen caught her attention and she frowned, then made a face that couldn't scream 'OMGWTF' louder if it tried. "Holy shit, they had him on this stuff? What the fuck is wrong with people from the 1970s?!"

Benzodiazepine is dangerous shit, apparently.

Russell moved over to her and read over her shoulder in disbelief. "Okay, that does it, he's becoming an inpatient until we've got him properly treated on drugs that won't melt his damn brain."

Winry continued reading up on the benzodiazepine. "Hey, Russell, it says that valium works to counter that addiction." She glanced up at him. "He's already on that, but let's change his dosage to match whatever he was on with the benzo, and then work him down. Any of those drugs on that list an anti-psychotic? We're gonna have to take him off of any of those, too."

She frowned. "At this rate, I'm tempted to have Ed get ahold of Filia to come cast a Dicleary spell and make it faster and easier on all of us."

"That might be a good idea," Russell said as he turned back to the work of writing up a list of what kind of drugs the new patient was on.

Edward shows up about then, wet hair pulled back in a braid. Apparently, Winry caught him just getting out of the shower. "So exactly what kind of crazy shit will I be transmuting here?" he asks. "Winry, you seemed a bit... uh."

"Boggled?" Winry finished for him. "More like what the fucking all over the place. This guy is on some mind-melting drugs from the 1970s."

Edward looks at her for a second. "When you start talking like me, I worry, Winry."

He steps over behind her, looking over her shoulder at the chemical formulas pulled up. "Those shouldn't be hard to transmute. But what kind of lunatic puts that in his body?"

"A doctor who thought he was doing a good thing," Russell said. "We're going to try to figure out how to get him off the brain-melters and onto something sane." He paused. "So to speak."

"He's a soldier, I could tell that much," Winry explained, "and the picture I saw made me think of those Vietnam movies, and I've heard some bad things about the psychiatric care those men received when they got back home."

She looked at Ed. "Hold off on transmuting the Diazepam when you get to it, Ed. I want to find out what dosage of the Benzodiazepine he was on first. And don't transmute the anti-psychotic, that makes the withdrawl from the Benzo worse."

She looked back at Russell. "We're gonna have to see if he'd be willing to talk to us about what symptoms he still has. If he doesn't want to, then I guess we can just hand over a refill, because I did say I could help him, but I want to see if he'll be willing to work with us, first."

"Would he be willing to work with us if we said this shit is melting his brain into tapioca pudding and we have better alternatives?" Russell shook his head. "Those doctors were the insane ones."

"He might," Winry said. "I didn't talk to him very long, but he might be skittish. And to be fair to the doctors in his time, ours aren't really any better. They can only go by what they know. We're lucky. We have access to better information in the Nexus."

Speaking of the skittish, he's followed your directions Winry, and now he's knocking hesitantly on the door. He didn't really expect it to be in an apartment building...but he's seen stranger.

He's not sure if Banzai'll be allowed in though. He probably should've asked that...oh well. Knock knock!

Russell glanced to the door then to Winry as he stepped over to open it. "Hey, Ken, right?" he asked, glancing back to Winry for confirmation as he stepped aside.

Winry looked up. "Hello, Mister Hidaka." She glanced down, seeing Banzai. "Who's your friend?" she asked, turning in her seat and leaning over, offering her hand to the dog.

"His name's Banzai."

He has very good puppy-manners. He sniffs her hand and then sits nicely for pets. ♥

"...and just Ken's fine." He didn't feel all that comfortable being called 'Mister Hidaka,' she didn't look all that younger than he was himself.

Winry obliged Banzai with pettings and chin scritchies. "He's very well-trained," she complimented.

She looked back up at Ken. "Okay, we've gone over the medicines, we have what we need to transmute them for you, but before we do, would you mind if we talked a little bit? I want to ask some questions about some of these, see if maybe we can't start helping you get off the drugs and be able live without them."

She held up a hand to forestall any protests. "If you're not comfortable with it, that's fine, we'll hand over the medicine and that'll be that. But we'd like to help you, and some of these medicines, well... I'd only give them to someone if I were intent on killing that person or making them permanently crazy."

"He's smart enough that he'd be a terror if he wasn't," Ken said, giving him a hand signal to lie down. Banzai obliges, moving over out of the way before settling down--where he can keep an eye on his master.

"...I don't mind." He supposed, anyway. Somehow he got the impression that even if he did mind, it wouldn't do too much good--three different people in here, just for this? ...and getting off the medicines was what Ran would have wanted.

He resisted the urge to speak up with his belief that he was already permanently crazy (and wasn't sure he cared,) and just nodded. Hey, at least if he went nuts, Jei would be in good company. But Max and Mary...

Winry glanced at Russell. That'd have to be good enough. She looked back at Ken. "How long ago were you on the benzo? And how long were you on that?"

God, how long had it been? "How long ago? Until about six months ago, I think. I was on it off and on for four years."

"Four years?" Russell echoed, his voice strained and incredulous. He shook his head. "Have you been experiencing tremors, or flu-like symptoms, or chest pains, mood swings, blurred vision, or... quite frankly, anything at all? The list of withdrawal symptoms for benzo is impressive, and it's considered more dangerous than opiates like morphine to withdraw from."

Tremors? Like his hand's doing right now? Those kinds of tremors? :D And mood swings...he'd snapped at Patricia the other day, without really meaning to--she'd just said something so thoughtless, callous...

"...mood swings, I guess. And..." Well, he just holds up his hand. He's not quite shaking like a maraca, but it is noticeable. He'd just chalked it up to the anxiety.

Winry eyed the shaky hand Ken held up, then sighed. "Okay, we're going to definitely keep you on the Valium. I want to match doses of that with what you had of the benzo, and we'll work on weaning you down off of that. We're going to take you off the haloperidol, too, at least for awhile. Anti-psychotics like that tend to make the withdrawal from benzo worse."

She glanced back at Ed. "Go ahead and make the diazepam, Ed. Hold off on the haloperidol."

She looked back at Ken. "We're going to hold off on some of the other drugs too, until we have the withdrawal symptoms under control. A lot of what you're having trouble with goes back to that. That stuff warps how the brain works, and it takes quite some time for your body to readapt. Once we've safely passed the detox stage, we're going to see what complaints remain and medicate according to that. But everything I give you, it'll be with the intention of helping you someday not need it, all right?"
