Who: Harry Potter and Ron Weasley
What: Seeing Azkaban first-hand
Where:The Ministry/Azkaban
When: Sunday morning
Rating: Low
Harry couldn't even remember what he was doing when the Patronus of one of his fellow Aurors appeared in the living room of his and Ron's flat. He could have been reading a Quidditch magazine, maybe it was a newspaper? It wasn't really important now anyway. What was important was getting to the Ministry as fast as possible.
He couldn't bloody believe that this was happening again. He didn't want to believe it either. He was hoping that they'd somehow made some kind of mistake, even if it didn't make the tiniest bit of sense. There was no way anyone could mistake an Azkaban breakout.
Harry ran his hand through his already messy hair as he headed into the Auror office. A couple of the guys looked like they hadn't been home since yesterday and the air was definitely sombre. He looked around but didn't see Ron anywhere yet and could only assume that he was on his way. No way would he be missing this.
--
Ron supposed that it was a good thing, him being with Hermione when he got the news. At least he could know that she knew. But leaving her? He arrived in the Auror office with a sinking feeling in his stomach, trying to push thoughts of her aside so that he could focus on work.
He came up behind Harry, who he had been refusing to talk to the past few days, but that pact with himself was long forgotten. "Hey," he said quietly. "I guess we're waiting on instructions?"
He'd been tired while on the verge of sleep, but now he felt exhausted. Drained. "Hermione says to be careful," he added. He guessed he didn't have to tell Harry that leaving her alone had been incredibly difficult. If anything, it was written on his face.
--
"Hey," Harry replied, turning to look at Ron. He was glad that he was here. "Yeah, we're being split up," he explained. "Most of us heading to Azkaban, a couple of the guys following a lead."
He looked back toward everyone standing around waiting for instructions, it was so quiet and tense in there that he was sure every single one of them was listening to his conversation. Harry gave a quick grin when Ron told him what Hermione had said, sounded just like her and it was actually kind of comforting.
"Weird not to have her here, isn't it?"
--
"Beyond weird," Ron agreed. But hearing the plan worked to clear his head, and he focused his thoughts on that. "How bad is it?" he asked, wondering if Harry had heard before he'd arrived. But there was no time for Harry to answer as one of the Aurors arrived and began grouping people together for port keys.
"Brace yourselves," he cautioned, "You'll receive further instructions upon arrival." Ron heard as he directed the few remaining outside of groups to follow him, before the port key lit up and transported them to the center of Azkaban.
Bloody hell.
"Glad she's not here to see this," Ron muttered.
--
Harry didn't know how bad it was, no one had been game to say. He didn't get a chance to tell Ron that anyway before things started to come together all of a sudden and they were all blocked into groups and given a portkey to take hold of.
This was the worst mode of transportation in Harry's opinion, but he did as his fellow Auror instructed and braced himself as they all took hold, the portkey lighting up and his stomach dissolving into knots as it dropped them into Azkaban.
He swallowed hard as he took in the scene that was laid out before them. It was nothing like he had seen in a long while and something he had hoped not to see again.
"Wow."
--
They were given their instructions and then left to set about their work, with a group of Healers arriving shortly after to tend to the survivors.
"It was an ambush," Ron said quietly enough that only Harry could hear him.
--
Even with instructions Harry wasn't sure what to do first. Standing around shaking his head and saying "Bloody hell" probably wasn't going to be very helpful, but bloody hell.
"Never saw it coming," he agreed. "Small mercies."
--
"Alright," Ron nodded at Harry. "Let's get to work." He had to do something.
It was going to be a long night. And worse, he knew this was only the beginning.
