Who: Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott
When: Late Sunday night
Where: The old greenhouse at the back of the Abbott property
What: Valentine's Day
Rating: Low at the start, but then we'll find out!
Hannah had so many ideas for Valentine's Day: taking Neville on a trip somewhere romantic. Cooking a really really fancy dinner. Or going out for dinner. Or going on a picnic to someplace special. Or...or...or there had been a battle that he had to prepare for, and then his grandmother got sick and died instead.
Or that.
Instead, a small activity that she began to keep her mind off of how upset she was had turned in to, well, something that she thought was special, even though she'd much rather have had the chance to plan something incredible! spectacular! romantic! She didn't know what it was in her that was insisting that she had to do this right--it wasn't her usual certainty that she would screw them up, but something far deeper and larger, something that felt precious and covered in gold.
Taking in a deep breath, she pulled her hair nervously over her shoulders, waiting for Neville to come to the greenhouse to meet her. It looked pretty in here, she thought, with candles mixed among the plants, some suspended in the air to give a rich, yellowed glow, the reflection in the glass windows looking like little gold stars. The butterflies she had transfigured from colored paper were flying around the room in a half-drunken lurch.
Okay. So Hannah's Transfiguration skills weren't the best.
Around the room were about thirty small flower pots with tiny seedlings just beginning to sprout out, plus thirty larger pots with flowers or plants in full bloom; all had tags on them, the large pots describing moments of their friendship, the seedings each day since that first kiss. Would he find it romantic? Or find it romantic like Harry had, with Harry's uncertainty and apathy radiating through the page. Would Nev understand that this wasn't just about them, but about how much she was trying to say to him after his Gran's death? Hannah's hands twisted nervously together. When the door began to open, Hannah quickly aimed her wand to the radio to turn on some nice, romantic station.
And a butterfly right in front of the door decided this was the opportune time to wilt to its pathetic death and change back to paper, directly in front of Neville. Hannah closed her eyes, took in a deep "Don't panic, Miles and everything else will not ruin my sweetheart's night, Transfigurations is not the boss of me" breath, and then opened her eyes, beaming, "Happy Valentine's Day, Nev!" Then she bit on her lower lip and repeated herself, this time more hesitantly, "Happy Valentine's Day?" Is this okay?
