Who: Hermione Granger.
What: A concerning discovery.
Where: Her flat.
When: Tuesday afternoon.
Rating: Low.
If there was one thing Hermione did not do, it was let something beat her. Though she was beginning to think this map was coming close. Try as she might, she couldn't get the location charms to go far enough whilst still staying on the parchment. She needed a somewhat sliding map, so it would move with the names on it. Instead, she found the names wandering off the page every time they went further than her charm allowed. Giving an irritated huff, she wiped the location charms completely and intended to start all over again.
At the very least she had mastered the same magic used on Mrs Weasley's clock, after borrowing the time piece earlier in the day. Now Ron and Harry's names appeared there on the map, each of them smack bang in the middle until she could work out the glitch when it came to locations. Both of them were listed as Fine, wherever they were.
Running a hand through her hair and discovering the fact that it was getting more tangled every time she did it, Hermione decided to check her bookshelves for anything useful she might have missed. Ron had laughed at her when she arranged them all in alphabetical order and by subject, but it certainly made things easier for her now.
Selecting two volumes, Hermione sat down where she was in the middle of the floor and scanned the index of each before flicking through various pages. It all looked to be the same as what she had already tried; offering help with static charms only. Muttering under her breath, bothered by the fact that her books couldn't currently help her, she supposed she would have to make a trip to Flourish & Blotts sometime that week. She could say hello to Penny at the same time, though she would be seeing her Friday anyway.
Putting the books back in their rightful place, Hermione resigned herself to sitting in front of the map a little longer, hoping that the correct magic would just come to her. Her homework was already finished, checked and then re-finished because she didn't like the first lot, so it wasn't as if she was spoilt for choice when it came to useful things to do anyway. She intended to wait until she had spoken with Penny before she decided on a date and time for the first meeting of Dumbledore's Army, it was no use having one without what should be their latest member.
Dropping down into the chair in front of her desk, she ran a hand through her again before internally scolding herself. No wonder it was always such a mess. Glancing down at the map with the intention of trying the location charms all over again, Hermione felt as though someone had suddenly tipped ice water down her back. She froze for a long moment, staring at the parchment in front of her and trying to remember what it was like to breathe.
The little label hovering over Ron's name was no longer Fine and had changed to Grave Peril. Harry's was still the same. She hesitated, not certain if this was something she had done wrong with her magic or if the boys' situation had changed in the fifteen minutes or so she had been in the living room. She was rarely wrong, and Hermione decided she would rather look like an overprotective nuisance than miss the fact that something had happened to Ron.
Giving brief thought to her journal, she thought it was doubtful that Harry would have it on him and if he did, he certainly wouldn't have it open. That left her with the option of sending an owl or her Patronus. She was loathe to use her Patronus for anything more than a dire emergency, and she couldn't even really be sure that this was. All the same, she hurried out of her flat and toward Diagon Alley, forgoing her coat or anything warmer than the jeans and light jumper she had on. Her thoughts were only on Ron.
