Never in his life had George looked forward to a birthday less. Every year he and Fred had made the day more explosive than the last, moving beyond mere April Fools' pranks to outright mayhem. It was what they were best at, honestly. They were merely a month past their last birthday when Fred died, so there had been almost nothing planned for this year's festivities.
When his siblings had birthdays, his mother had always pooled all the money she could for an enormous home-made cake. For the twins, however, she couldn't afford to do this for each of them, so she made two smaller cakes. It was clear that this upset her, but George didn't care.
It was no wonder that George had spent this particular birthday unable to think of anything but these facts. He even missed the way his dad would take the twins aside and try and teach them some sort of moral lesson about not setting the cat on fire or trying to convince their younger siblings that the conjunction of the moon during the month of April made things weigh less on Earth.
When Parvati had first invited him out, he was prepared to fight for his right to stay inside and sulk by himself, an activity that he felt he deserved to partake in once a year. Of course, saying no to a woman as strong-willed as Miss Patil proved impossible, or perhaps he really did want to get away from memories.
At six thirty, George picked up the violently purple urn from the coffee table and set it up on the shelf. He left the hunter's orange party hat on top, no reason to strip the other birthday boy of his party vestments.
It didn't take him long to change into something presentable and he had a good ten minutes to sit on the sofa and wait, staring up at the urn on its shelf.
