The name Jarvis had been nagging at her ever since she’d read it, like something inside her was trying to tell her to pay attention, that there was more to it than just a dog named randomly by someone else. Sarah couldn’t place it, though. She resisted searching for the name online as long as she could -- she’d been trying to avoid jumping the gun and reading about things she hadn’t lived, or reading about things her friends hadn’t lived yet, because it felt too invasive now that she knew who she was dreaming of -- but when she finally plugged the name into Google, the third result practically screamed at her. Tony Stark’s intelligent computer. She should have known. As soon as she read it, she remembered watching the movies and felt a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. This was why she’d avoided looking things up: the fact that she was dreaming about the things she’d also seen in movies felt too personal, too close now to enjoy. A year ago, she would have chalked the name up to random coincidence. Now, she couldn’t help but wonder if there was more to it. What were the odds? A tech guy with a pet named Jarvis? Sarah felt a shiver run down her spine. What were the odds? She closed her eyes for a moment and tried to clear her mind. Instead, she was in Stark Tower. Emotions ran high -- as they usually did with the Avengers -- and it was only Thor’s arrival that stopped the fighting between himself, Tony, Bruce, the Maximoffs. Steve didn’t want to fight with them -- he wanted Tony and Bruce to be their allies, he wanted to be able to trust in them, but they kept on leaving the rest of the team out of what they were doing instead of including them, and Steve couldn’t abide by that. Thor’s lightning nearly blinded him, and he looked away briefly while the Asgardian focused his power on the tank. The next moment, something -- someone -- burst free from it and leapt at Thor. In defense, Thor tossed him away, towards the windows facing out at New York. Steve was ready to jump in case of an attack, but all that the figure did was stand at the window. He flew back, gracefully, but Steve still felt angry. “You helped create this?” Thor’s explanation did nothing to settle Steve’s mind or his mood. All he could see was the potential destruction. “Why does your vision sound like JARVIS?” “We reconfigured JARVIS’s matrix to create something new,” Tony answered as he slowly approached his handiwork, inspecting it as he circled the new being. “I think I’ve had my fill of new.” He did think the new creature in front of them was a child of Ultron, that he still had the same capabilities and instincts -- maybe even worse ones, if what Thor was saying about the power of the Mind Stone was true. If that was true, what had Tony and Bruce done? Could they really trust him? Was he on their side? Steve didn’t disagree that they all needed each other. It was all he’d been trying to do since they first formed the Avengers, but he hadn’t managed to form a cohesive team. They were always at each other’s throats for one reason or another. Would they really be able to save the world like that? “There may be no way to make you trust me,” Vision said as he picked up Thor’s hammer like it weighed as much as a newspaper, “but we need to go.” Steve's breath caught in his throat. Maybe he'd read everything wrong. Sarah groaned and put her head in her hands. God, she hoped she was just reading too much into it, because she wasn’t sure how ready she was to face that on top of everything else she’d seen. Was there an end in sight? And what was it going to look like? |
