Murder. Carmen usually handled her job well. She approached it scientifically, as was required of someone in her position. She analyzed and diagnosed situations based on what she saw in front of her. But this case was turning into something a bit too personal, though she kept it as close to her as possible.
Well, this time was at least attempted murder, but it was bringing everything from her childhood back to the limelight again. The memories, which had been gone for so long, came flooding back in a rush. Her father, sending her mother out of the room. Her mother coming to usher the children outside. Carmen heard the gun shot, followed by a man's plea, and another gun shot. That she remembered, clear as day. Her mother coming to Carmen, pressing the silver cross and rosary into her hand, whispering soothing words and instructions to her. Take your siblings to the border. Help will be waiting.
She'd obeyed, but she'd looked back. Just in time to see her mother, murdered in cold blood before her. Both her parents were killed by the drug wars near Juarez. Carmen pulled the tiny cross out of her pocket, clenching her fingers briefly in thought.
She shook her head clear, focusing on the task at hand. This was crazy. A hitman hired to kill someone who missed. Who was still out there, probably going to try again. Wait. Was that...the missing link? She flipped frantically through the paperwork, focused on her tasks at hand, frantically shifting from reality to the memory world that she'd left behind.
She barely noticed it when Kevin slipped from her mind, and a new voice appeared. Look at it a bit more closely than that, remarked the voice in her head. Stop getting so involved in this, really! I mean, this is serious news! Look at what the media is saying, if you really want answers. More, what they aren't saying! Maybe someone in the media's getting paid off or something, who knows!
Carmen sat straight up, curious, trying to place the voice. It wasn't hers, and it definitely wasn't Kevin's. "Who are you?" she whispered outloud, wondering, not really wanting to know but at thee same time, genuinely interested.
Me? Don't worry about me, just yet! This is some juicy stuff, that's for sure! You've got some serious work to do here. Get to the bottom of this, would you?
Her question would have to wait. Whoever was in her head now, she'd find out eventually. For now, though, Carmen dug back into her paperwork and samples, reassured that she might be on the right track and determined to find their missing killer.
