Who: October Fischer
What: A change
Where: Las Vegas
When: Recently
Warnings/Rating: None
It had been a long time since Toby had had to subject himself to a job search. The last time had been when he planned the move from Phoenix back up to Vegas, and that had been a completely different sort of search. Applications had been sent, recommendations, in-person interviews, meeting with the board. That was nothing like his current search where he had answered ads in the local papers, checked out what was available online, before finally accepting a position at a local coffee shop. He had, unfortunately, open hours, willing to work whenever they needed him, and as such, 4am saw him clocking in for his first shift as a barista.
He was older than most of the people who worked there, but none of them seemed inclined to point out the differences. Toby, sadly enough, knew his coffee inside and out due to his own addiction to caffeine, so perhaps it was likely that a job at a coffee shop was not one of his better decisions. But he fell into the pace of it eventually, working the espresso machine to push out this latte and that cappuccino, small talk made with his new coworkers, and when 1pm rolled around, his shift finally over, Toby felt more tired than he had in weeks. But it was tired in a good way.
March might have been right. This was possibly an opportunity for him to do something different with his life, at least for a while. The suspension wasn't permanent, and even though it haunted his dreams, bogging him down with a bruise to his confidence, it wasn't something he could sit and dwell upon. So he pushed forward and he made himself leave the house, made himself find something else to think about that wasn't medicine, that wasn't the hospital, that wasn't the plethora of mistakes he had made in the last month. Changes all around, it seemed.
He sat in the parking lot of the coffee shop, the smell of coffee clinging to him, and Toby felt at peace for the first time in several weeks. And it was while he sat there, letting his thoughts drift, that he felt something different in his head. The wizard named Harry, gruff and short on words, seemed to be absent, and in his place was someone who was much softer around the edges, but hardly lacking in ferocity of her own. The corner of his mouth picked up in a smile as he shook his head, putting the car into gear.
Changes all around, indeed.
