Who: Mingmei (solo log), Life-Altering event
When: Backdated about a week, just before Mingmei's Alter switch to Harry
Where: her apartment
What: Mingmei gets some disturbing news from home
Warnings/Rating: umm...probably PG-13ish for news about severe illness
She had been about to head off to break on work when she'd received the phone call from someone. They'd reached her at work. It was the Chinese embassy, with a phone call from her sister, XiaoXing. Requesting someone to take her place on the staff floor for some time, Mingmei took the phone call in the safety of the back room of the Starbucks, where she didn't think she'd be bothered.
"Sister." Mingmei sighed with relief when she heard XiaoXing's voice. The girl had departed so suddenly from Las Vegas that she'd hoped her sister was safe and well, even if she didn't think XiaoXing would be happy back in China. Things happened, that was all. And apparently, they did. The young Chinese girl listened to her sister recall the news that the family had only received earlier that evening. Their mother had become severely ill, ill to the point where she was hospitalized. The doctors weren't speaking to XiaoXing and their father wasn't telling them what the illness was.
Mingmei sank into the nearest chair, holding the phone close as she spoke with her sister in their native Cantonese. "What do you know?" she questioned, curious to find out, wanting to know all the information that she possibly could know about what was going on. Her sister suspected it was life threatening, and Mingmei nodded sadly in agreement. She could see the tears rolling down her own cheeks, and she tried to hide them from her employees in case someone walked by. "So that's why Baba wouldn't tell us what's happening," Mingmei whispered. "And Anguo? Is he well?"
Yes, her brother was doing well. He was working steadily at the shop, keeping the family going, but they were all worried. Mother was in her seventies already. It wasn't too terribly old for most in China, but Chinese medicine wasn't exactly the best for healing some illnesses, as Mingmei had learned. "Thank you for calling, Sister, and please take care of yourself." Once she hung up, Mingmei curled up in her chair, hugging herself as she let tears roll. She tried to put on a brave face for her sister. She didn't want XiaoXing to worry about her as well, knowing that she was here when XiaoXing was half a world away.
Her mother was ill, they didn't know what was wrong with her, and she could only hope that, in time, their Baba would eventually share that information with his children.
