Who: John --> Clare
What: Someone wants to go home
Where: London --> Passages
When: Approximately a day and a half after this, before the mess appeared in the lobby.
Warnings/Rating: Being injured and foolish and stubborn
John was sleeping in the hospital, not completely aware of the passing time. He had already been pulled through the door once, but Clare had crumpled in the hallway the second she was back through, and had gratefully crawled back over again to allow John to carry on dealing with the repercussions of the Masquerade.
Over the next day though, she had watched silently from the back of John's mind. She couldn't talk, couldn't do anything more than watch and take stock of what she could remember from the roof, what she could feel of the injuries. The first trip back across to Las Vegas had been cut short by her surprise, but as the time ticked down to the end of the next day, she steeled herself.
John was expecting a repeat of the day before, Clare quickly crossing back to London, but while she again slid to the floor, arm against the wall to keep the pressure from her back. She stayed kneeling on the floor in front of the door to London, peering back through at the bright hospital room, before reaching up to gingerly close the door. She wanted to give up, wanted to let someone else take care of this, but she couldn't miss any more work. And this was as much her problem to deal with as it was John's. So she pushed the memories and thoughts out of her head as best she could, fought her way back to her feet, and began to make her slow, halting way out of the hotel.
The elevator was frightening, but it worked, taking her down to the first floor in a chorus of squeaking. She clung to the handrails in the rickety car, knuckles going white and bloodless. When she reached the lobby, she exited the elevator and then paused. There was no way she was making it all the way back to her apartment on foot, and somewhere along the line she had lost her phone. All she had was money (enough for a cab if she could find one) and the notebook.
