Seriously, how difficult could it be?
Grinning to himself as he tightened the seatbelt a bit more snuggly and glanced over at his very, very pale faced passenger. Frodo did what he had seen Jamie do, pushed the key into the keyhole and turned the key one click, and then the second. Of course, Chetan's truck started right away. Well that was easy enough to understand. The feet pedals were a bit more confusing to figure out. He knew the basics, Press barefoot against one and it made the truck stop, press barefoot against the other and it made the truck go. He pushed down with left first and nothing happened.
No leap forward or backwards.
No funny lights.
Well that was certainly not the result he expected. He pushed down the second. Aha - now the noise increased dramatically when he did that. Familiar enough sound, it was the noise the truck made one when Jamie had been speeding through and around traffic. So doing that would increase the speed of the truck. If they ever got it moving.
His brow wrinkled confused. What had he missed?
"What do you suppose is the command for giddy up?"
Frodo's idea of trying to drive this machine of Chetan's was a bit crazy, but Sam knew that Frodo without his adventures was not something that he could even think of. So he went along, especially because he wanted to be there, to make sure that Mr. Frodo didn't do anything too terrible or anything too dangerous. Because without his Sam around, Frodo did tend to get into plenty of trouble, Sam knew that.
"I know that you want to try to make this thing go, Mr. Frodo, but Mr. Jamie told us it's not a bus or a horse or whatever it was that he said. It's a bit like Mr. Gandalf's magic, this thing. What are some of his magic words that you know? You spent more time with Mr. Gandalf, so maybe you heard some of his words that he used to make things actually go." Sam was a bit baffled himself, worried that whatever he did would only wind up causing more trouble than not.
Frodo moved the seat forward so he didn't have to lie down in the seat to stretch to reach the foot pedals anymore. "I do not believe magic works here. Others have spoken of losing theirs when they arrived in Lost Vague Us in my journal, so I do not think that Gandalf's magical words will work for us. Or it would be working for all these people already in Lost Vague Us." It was a riddle indeed waiting for them in the form of the noisy truck beast.
He rubbed his fingers over the wheel in front of him in thought.
Perhaps.
He closed his eyes and tried to think through what he had seen through Chay's eyes. "I think I remember. It's this lever with the PRD321 on it. Prolly most of those letters and numbers mean something. No F for forward or front or advance, further, promote.. Oh, there is a P but that is what the letter we are on now, so it cannot be that. R - Oh! Retreat! Reverse! Okay that makes sense. So by default we should use D or one of the numbers."
Frodo was better at riddles than Sam ever could be, so Sam generally let Frodo figure things out when it came to these riddles. However, he had to admit his curiosity. Frodo's logic seemed to make sense to Sam. "So what do 1, 2 and 3 mean?" he questioned lightly, tilting his head to the side in wonderment. "Maybe 3 means really fast, and 1 means slow. So we should try to put it in 1 to see if it goes slowly because, Mr. Frodo, as much as I'd like to try to make this thing go, I don't imagine it'd be very good for either of us if we went really fast."
At least, that logic made sense to Sam! He glanced proudly over at Mr. Frodo, deciding to let him figure out which method he wanted to take.
“Good thinking. If we get comfortable with one, then we can move to two and on to three. Then it will not matter what the D stands for.” After making sure that nothing was directly in front of him, he put his foot onto the pedal that did not make the truck’s noise increase and pulled the lever down slowly until it reached the number 1 spot. He noticed that when he had slid by the R that truck actually rocked a bit backward and then it paused again with the N. “N must mean- Not moving-.” As the lever slipped into gear Frodo felt the resistance from the brake pedal increase.
Taking a deep breath he released the pressure his foot hovering above the pedal and the truck started to creep forward at a snail’s pace. “Would you look at that, Sam! We are moving!” Now it was a matter of not running over any cacti in the canyon.
Granted, they weren't moving so incredibly fast, but Sam was absolutely thrilled. His eyes were wide as he looked around, glad that it was Frodo driving and not him. This strange truck that was called bus or something like that was actually moving! Still, without his two feet on the ground, Sam gripped the door handle tightly, prepared for anything to go wrong. "This is amazing, Mr. Frodo!" he exclaimed lightly.
"We could go anywhere! Do you think we could go back to the store with the magic doors?" he proclaimed excitedly.
Such fun. If they had, had one of these carts they could travel anywhere in Arnor!
And never get tired, or not have to feed a pony or anything! Frodo's smile got brighter. Why they could have gotten to Rivendell in days!
"I am not sure if I could find the Market place that had the magic doors. There was a lot more roads than The Shire has. We would also have to learn to go faster since those other carts were going faster than we are right now."
He pressed his foot down on the other foot pedal and the truck moved a little bit [but not too much] faster than when his foot wasn't on it at all. They would get used to this speed first and learn how to turn and stop the cart in the desert area before he was ready to try his luck on one of the roads.
