Anguo was excited. He was here, in Las Vegas, with his sisters for Chinese New Year. He expected this would be the one day of the year when he´d actually be forgiven by his parents for abandoning them to come to the United States. And, sure enough, he checked his e-mail on the fancy phone that he´d received upon crashing at the local motel here to find an e-mail filled with Chinese characters. His parents´ way of apologizing, momentarily. However, Anguo wasn´t fooled. He knew the apology was only there so that they wouldn´t start the new year on bad feelings. It was customary, after all. So he sent his own reply back, stating how he was shameful of leaving them but that he hoped that they enjoyed the year after all. His own way of saying that he had no intention of leaving, but that he understood their own wishes.
Arriving at a random supermarket that he paid little attention to the name, Anguo hopped off the local bus and hurried his way into the supermarket. He had a list of ingredients for something that he wanted to cook for his sisters that evening. As he approached the supermarket, however, something jolted. Something blurred his vision, caused him to not see clearly for just a moment. Thinking perhaps it was because he hadn´t eaten all day, Anguo straightened himself by the side of the supermarket, taking a few deep breaths in the cool, fresh air to try to calm himself down. Whatever had happened, he didn´t like it at all. He clenched his fist to his side, forcing himself to continue to go shopping. He was here now, after all, he may as well continue.
Once inside, he started down his list, gathering things into his cart as he normally would. However, about twenty minutes into his shopping, he stopped dead in his tracks. Down one aisle to his left, a woman was being held against her will. She was pinned to the edge of the aisle, her arms pulled back behind her head. Anguo´s eyes widened further to see a gun pointed at her head, and the man was whispering something threatening into her ear. He´d heard stories about America, especially Las Vegas, as a child, but he´d never thought...the world swayed again. This time it was more difficult to take control, and he heard voices in his head arguing. Real fucking voices. Anguo clenched a fist at his side as he leaned against a nearby shelf, fighting as the world swayed in and out of darkness for a moment.
"You should. He´s guilty, you know. You could do it here, very easily. You don´t even have to prove that he´s guilty here. He´s doing it for you!" said one voice.
"You´re right. He is making this very easy," said another voice, a stronger voice. The two bantered back and forth for a moment when Anguo looked down suddenly. His fingers were closed around the hilt of a knife, and his eyes widened in terror. It was enough to push the voices back completely as he regained control. He dropped the knife with a clatter, hurried to the front counter to pay for his belongings, and he hoped like hell that no one had seen him in the process.
What the HELL was that? Mingmei and XiaoXing had mentioned they´d had things in their heads, other voices. Was that HIS voice? What the hell was it? Two voices? He couldn´t even explain what had just happened. Neither of his sisters had warned him of its ability to take control, either. Maybe his was different? He could only hope like hell that it wasn´t!
