Who: Hank Pym
What: Moments before releasing robotic beetles on New York
Where: Marvel door, New York City
When: Thursday morning
Warnings: Violence. Watch your step!
Hank Pym woke up a robotics genius. He had always been skilled at formulating artificial life, but they were his central focus now. There was a lab at his disposal, a simple assembly line and the most advanced computers he could ask for. As a man who rarely needed extravagant resources to accomplish a goal, Pym found that after a few days he could change a prototype for a spy bug he was working on into something much more. A tease for what was to come.
If Janet was here maybe things would be different. They could have gone off together in search of the particles. She'd instill faith into him that despite everything that happened to them, he was still a good man. He still believed in helping people and stopping conflicts. But, the years had not been kind to Pym. He remembered only the faults, the resentment, the simple knowledge that he was never cut out to be an Avenger. A team of "heroes" that were all one step away from being the man Pym festered into.
"That's the last of it." Pym stood over a simple console attached to a special signal that worked as a way for him to monitor his plan and allow the Avengers to easily pull the plug. It was a pop quiz. A simple test to see if they remembered him. If they were coordinated enough in this world to take down a simple threat. From behind him, a muffled voice tried to scream. Pym creased his brow, annoyed and snapped to look at the figured tied to a chair. A simple girl with short brown hair and face like she was a pixie in a past life struggled against the restraints and mouth gag. "Would you like to see what I've accomplished?" Pym asked, his voice was old fashioned. Atlantic. Like an announcer in the 60's. She screamed no. He smiled.
In a nearby box, the sound of metal scuttling and scratching could be heard. Pym put on a headset, changed the settings on a handled device and opened the box. "These were designed to be spybots. But, I made them bigger. And, a little frenzied." He kicked the box over, letting the top flap down. In seconds, four large, metallic beetles buzzed together and scurried together towards the woman. Pym crossed his arms, steadying his gaze. Outside, the other thousands of metal beetles crawled out of New York sewers and vents to nip at the heels and cause panic. Chaos.
This wasn't just a test for the Avengers. He had to know how far down he was willing to sink to take his former teammates out. He had to see first hand what his creations could do and find a way to enjoy it. That's why he picked a girl who looked like Janet.
The woman tried to scream as the beetles rushed up her calves and began tearing away her jeans and shirt. In seconds, they had broken through the fabric and began slicing out pieces of flesh and skin. Her screams hit a new level of desperation, tears in her eyes as the beetles kept working until they hit bone. Pym saw the point where he could have easily saved her, that one last second to swoop in and be the hero he had once thought he was supposed to be. Pym felt no urge to do so. In fact, he practically felt nothing.
She didn't mean anything to him. Neither did New York. The only thing that mattered was challenging the Avengers.
