Charming Outro
Who: Jack
What: Getting some bad news
Where: His bedroom
When: Now
Warnings/Rating: The sads. Death of a family member.
The only reason Jack kept a land line was for family emergencies. The cell phone was for his patients, though he occasionally received a call from his father or Amy on it. It was his house phone that woke him up, the ring shrill in the night air.
"Hello?" He asked, blinking the sleep out of his eyes as he looked at the clock on his nightstand, trying to figure out what time it was. The red letters glared 2:34 at him.
"Jack?" His father's voice. He scrubbed a hand over his face as he sat up in bed.
"Yeah? Everything okay?" Something had to be wrong for his father to be calling at this hour.
"It's your Aunt Amy."
Jack didn't have a chance to ask what happened before his father went into the details. She woke up with chest pains, called 911, but by the time they arrived, she'd had a massive cardiac infarction. There was nothing they could do.
"Fuck," he said slowly, under his breath. The man in his head usually piped up about the most inappropriate of things, but on this, there was nothing. No condolences, just silence. Strange.
"I'm going to make the arrangements tomorrow," his father started.
"Yeah, yeah. I'll be there. Just let me know where you're going."
"I will, I'll call you in the morning."
"All right. Talk to you then, dad."
"See you then, son."
It wasn't until he heard the buzzing in his ear, the woman alerting him to hang up the phone that Jack realized his father had hung up. Amy. Gone. "Shit," he said quietly and to no one in particular. Throwing back the covers, he turned on the bedside lamp and got up. Sleep wasn't going to be an option tonight.
