WHO Lois & Tim
WHAT Movie Marathon!
WHEN Backdated: Just after Lois moves in to the Manor
WHERE Wayne Manor
WARNINGS None
Tim was both surprised and not that Lois Lane was now a guest of the Manor. He’d done his homework on this world, Gotham and Metropolis, and he’d read her article on Arkham. It wasn’t surprising that she’d end up in trouble sooner or later, but Superman usually took care of her. A quick scan through the journals indicated that Superman was either not around or not posting publicly. No one had seemed to see the man of steel recently though, which made the conclusion that he wasn’t around all the more logical. The question, he supposed, was how much she knew about Bruce or the rest of them. Given that they were in a fictional world, it wasn’t that much of a stretch to believe that she did, but he wanted to know when she was from, if she knew Connor and Chris and all of that. Bruce was good at hiding things but inviting an investigative journalist to live with them was asking for trouble if she didn’t know. Tim was full of questions and the best way to make friends was bonding. Besides, Bruce had asked them all to play nice - and included Selina in the family lock - so that was exactly what he was going to do. There was an extensive collection of movies in the entertainment room and an eerily well stocked kitchen. He had a feeling that was because of the new guest and Tim had every intention of taking advantage. After setting up a string of movies and filling the coffee table in front of the couch with every last bit of junk food he could find, he walked over to the staircase. “Hey Lois! Movie marathon?” he yelled up to her, but he didn’t bother to wait for an answer. She’d find her way down if she was interested and he’d find a way to entice her down if that wasn’t enough. He settled in on the couch and dragged a bowl of popcorn, mixed with M&Ms onto his lap. The movie started a few minutes later and it was a waiting game. Lois was in her room working on putting together a million different writing samples for a million different purposes depending on what kind of job she was actually going to manage to get. Add that in with the novel she wasn’t working on and she was a busy woman. And by busy she meant hungry. And by hungry she meant starving so when she heard the words “Movie Marathon” hollered from somewhere within the Bat Mansion she knew that no respectable movie night was going to come without some kind of snack. She hollered that she would be “right down” but in Lois speak that meant about fifteen minutes so by the time she finally rolled in and sat down in an empty chair in the “entertainment room” not to be confused with the “living room” or the “sitting room” or the “entry room” or the “great room” or any other room. “I’m glad there is someone here who can figure out how to turn this television on, I just mastered the one in my bedroom the other day.” It didn’t matter how much time it took for Lois to come down, it just mattered that she did. Tim had yet to meet a woman who could resist food and given the state of the cabinets, Lois couldn’t resist junk food. Even if she didn’t have any information, he’d at least get some good snacks and a couple movies out of the deal. He chuckled when she commented on the electronics. “Everything’s high tech around here. You get used to it after awhile,” he replied, still grinning, before taking another handful of popcorn and M&Ms. “Tim Drake. I don’t think we’ve met, here at least.” Tim was all smiles as he gave her a little wave, not even remotely interested in getting up to shake her hand. She didn’t seem the type. “Needed a break from Metropolis?” The movie was still going, but it wasn’t his first priority. He figured if she didn’t want to talk during the movie, she wouldn’t. Lois didn’t strike him as the type who didn’t do what she wanted. Lois gave Tim a look that clearly said she was never going to get used to all of the high tech nonsense around this place. Too many buttons just left her annoyed and frustrated. She smiled, “It’s nice to meet you - again - Tim..” Lois was only vaguely familiar with the Gotham City world, Batman she got, she’d spent plenty of time with Bruce Wayne over the years. Nightwing she knew. Tim she knew - vaguely.. But that was about as deep as she got into that world. Justice League aside, she didn’t know much. She shrugged at his question, “I think Metropolis needed a break from Lois Lane.” “Knowing of someone seems to be going around a lot lately. It’s the nature of the situation I guess.” Tim was hoping some others would show up, most of all Dick and least of all Ra’s al Ghul. “I’ll give it to you anyway, even if it’s not supposed to count.” He gave her a smile, boyish and charming in its own way, and pushed one of the bowls over toward her. “Help yourself. We don’t usually have this stuff in the house. I’m guessing you had something to do with it?” There were sometimes snacks, if he snuck them in, but the sheer quantity and quality of the snacks spread out before them had been entirely unexpected. “Vacations are always good. Probably could’ve suggested someplace nicer than Gotham though, even if it is safer here,” Tim replied. “Doing alright here though?” Lois smiled, “Well I know of you from where I come from too,” she reassured him, “I’ve been having my girl on the other side help fill in some blanks, but I know Dick and Bruce, so I’ve heard tell of a few things,” she said with a soft smile. “Though this Bruce isn’t the Bruce I know, which is strange.” Lois nodded, very proud of herself when he pointed out the junk food. It was one of the first things she’d done when she moved in. “I’ve become accustomed to a certain standard of living. Oreo cookies are a part of that standard,” she said with a shrug. Apparently, so was diabetes. “Not much of a vacation, but yes I am hanging in there just fine. Calling a little do-over and seeing what happens next.” “That’s good, at least. My guy is more interested in letting me handle it on my own.” He nodded when she said it was strange, having a different Bruce. “He’s very different. I see him sometimes, my Bruce, in this one. It’s...a strange situation, but I’m getting used to it. Being here helps,” Tim admitted with a smile. “I’m sure it’s a nice dose of familiarity for you too.” He hadn’t seen Lois in a while, but she was reminding him more and more of the Lois he knew. Of course, that also reminded him of Chris and then Connor and the others. At least Stephanie was here and it wasn’t as hard to let go of the anger as he thought it would be. Steph was still Steph and he stilled cared about her, misguided attempts to make him ‘better’ notwithstanding. “Do-overs might just be normal around here. I think that’s a good thing.” He took another handful of popcorn before asking, “So, you’ve been here for a while right? Want to fill me in?” “He is very different, but seeing the same things is vaguely comforting. When Superman was still around I saw some of the same things in him too, even though he was young,” she said with a shrug. When it got to the part about filling Tim in she furrowed her brow and chuckled, “What is it you’d like to know? I’m a bit disconnected from the Gotham City world, but given that I’ve taken up residence I’m thinking I better bring myself up to speed too.” “He was younger? I can’t imagine it was easy for either of you then. The different...starting points I suppose I could say? It certainly makes things interesting. Try having an annoying...Damian turn out to suddenly be eighteen. Boy am I glad I’m still older than him. I don’t know if I could’ve handled him being older.” Tim wrinkled his nose at the thought. That would’ve just been awful on so many levels. “But anyway, yea I mean, with what’s been going on. Steph sort of filled me in, and Bruce a little. Selina’s here too, isn’t she?” It was an innocent enough question and he was fishing, but she didn’t need to know that, right? “It was weird, but no use dwelling,” and that really was the last thing she wanted to talk about. She hadn’t met old and decrepit (exaggeration) Damian yet, but she could only imagine how strange that would be for anyone who knew him as the kid she’d heard so much about. It was a weird situation all around. “Selina is here,” she said with a bit of a smile at the mention of her unlikely ally. Tim understood not wanting to talk about Clark, so he dropped the subject easily enough. The smile that accompanied Selina’s mention was unexpected but he only quirked an eyebrow and turned his attention to the movie for a little while as he tried to formulate a question. The smile meant some kind of fondness and he didn’t think it was about Damian or even Clark, but what did it mean? Were they friendly? What was Selina doing in Metropolis if they were? Or had Lois spent more of her time here before she moved in? There were a lot of questions but he wasn’t sure how best to ask them. “How is she?” he chose to ask, knowing he could just brush it off as passing interest if need be. Lois raised her eyebrows curiously, this kid was dealing with Lois Lane and she didn’t take any line of questioning lightly. He wanted to know something. She shrugged, “She’s Selina. Why?” Tim shrugged in return. “Just curious. I know a bit about what Damian’s up to, Steph and Bruce too. I only talked to Selina very briefly,” he explained, willing to give up some of his motivation for asking. “I’m just trying to get a handle on how things are here, that’s all.” He glanced at her before turning his attention back to the movie. There didn’t really need to be much said after that, which didn’t particularly bother him. This was as much about starting to build a relationship with Lois as it was trying to get information on Selina. And honestly...as long as she stayed out of his way, and he stayed out of hers, they’d get along probably better than he got along with Damian. |
