Thor had promised her once that he would return to her and he meant to keep it, but he had to save Jotunheim from destruction. With the Bifrost gone, the only way in and out of Asgard was the doors and even those had taken some getting used to. Then it was only a matter of waiting to see if she had returned as he had. Seeing her on the journals had brought both the icy grip of dread and the hot relief of knowing she was all right. There was no question that he would return to her. Even if she sent him away, he would come to her at least once. So he left his door, appearing in Vegas for only a moment before going through again, this time to the Vegas of his world. It was nothing to fly to New Mexico where Jane was. Unlike when he left, he was smiling as he was a silver-red streak in the air. As much as he loved Sif, and he had, Jane had captured his interest. She was the one to help him, to make him see the beauty of Midgard and for that he would always be grateful. And as she had helped him, he would do his best to keep her safe. Currently, that meant keeping her from Loki. He had not forgotten his brother's words in Heimdall's observatory about coming to see her and while his brother might have other distractions, he wasn't going to risk Jane's safety, not when he could avoid it. He set down to the soil of Midgard in a cloud of dust in Puente Antiguo. The town had been repaired since he was here last and he was glad to see it, but that didn't stop him from striding towards the building that Jane had been using for her own. Jane was glad to be back with her research. She didn’t trust it with anyone else and even though SHIELD had given her access to their satellites and other resources, there was still that lingering fear that they would simply snatch it all away, leaving her without any chance of finding Thor. After their brief kiss before his return to Asgard, Jane had waited until there was no chance of his return and Erik pulled her away from the markings in the dirt. Not a day went by that she didn’t hope that he would return and those same days were spent spilling over data, formulas and equations. She would do whatever it took to find a way back to him. Faced with the possibility of seeing him without the need for the Bifrost, Jane was torn. She wanted to see him, to ensure that he was okay, but it felt a bit like they were cheating. Without having to open the bridge from Earth, the work she was doing could have easily been described as irrelevant. She worked so hard that more often than not, she slept at her desk and awoke to Darcy bringing her fresh coffee. She wished the annoying undergrad was here, along with her mentor, but it seemed she was on her own with the SHIELD researchers she’d been given. That wasn’t important at the moment though, because Thor was due any minute. The building itself had been refinished along with the town, due in part to the additional technology that SHIELD had granted her. Everything seemed much more high tech but it just made her job that much easier. Dressed casually in jeans, a tank top, and a checkered shirt over that, Jane was hunched over one of the computers, ensuring that her data was still in tact, when she heard the door open. It could only be him. “Just a minute!” she called, wanting to get through the line of data she was on before pulling away. She was procrastinating, at least a little bit. She turned when she was done and the sight of him had her rooted on the spot. The sight of her did not still him in the least and he crossed the room, dressed as he had been the last time they saw one another. He didn't even mind the order to wait a minute, but smiled as he gathered her into a tight hug. "Jane," he murmured. She smelled as he remembered, sweet and dry like the desert and the faint scent of whatever shampoo she was using this week. It took him a few seconds to remember to relax his arms so he didn't hurt her. She wasn't Volstagg or Fandral or even Sif, but a woman who, no matter her inner strength, was still very much mortal. His embrace was so tight that it lifted Jane off her feet and she couldn’t help but smile as her arms went around his neck. He managed to remember that he could crush her if he continued to hold her so tightly so her feet found the ground once more. It was a few long minutes before she pulled away, but even then it was only enough to get a good look at him. One of her hands came up to push some of his hair back behind his ear and it was somewhat obvious - or it would have been to her - that she was at a loss as to what to say. “Hi,” she finally said, a slight blush coloring her cheeks. After months of working and waiting, imaging and dreaming of this moment, Jane felt at a loss. He was...unbelievable. She’d been skeptical at first and there was still a small part of her that wouldn’t truly believe him until she could see Asgard and travel the Bifrost Bridge herself. Going through the doors was a cheat but she was glad for it because she could see him again. “How...uhm, how’re you?” "Hi," he responded, smiling warmly at at her. It'd been too long and seeing her again only reminded him of all the things that he loved about Midgard and all the reasons why he promised her he would come back for her. Her loss of words went scarcely noticed by him. "I'm... well. And you?" Strictly speaking, it would have been polite to release her, but he couldn't manage to force his hands away from her yet, and so they remained loose low on her waist. "How does your work go?" Even with the doors, the Bifrost had to be rebuilt, and he knew how much she loved the work she was doing. He would not take that from her. A soft, wondrous chuckle escaped her when he just smiled and said ‘hi’ back. It was unbelievably normal and everything about him wasn’t. He was a god for crying out loud. That didn’t excuse him from acting like a decent human being with good manners, but it was still surprising when he showed her just how much he’d learned about her culture. She wondered what else he’d learned and also what he’d been through since she last saw him. Jane was glad he didn’t let her go because even though she wasn’t sure where they stood or even how she felt about him, she fully enjoyed the way his arms felt around her. “A little confused. This whole situation is weird and the girl I’m in, she’s insane. I hope you’ve got better luck than me.” To Jane, insane was putting it mildly, but as long as whatever happened on that side of the door didn’t bother her here, she’d be fine. “As for work...” she pulled away then and turned back to her computers. “I’m missing something. Whatever causes the bridge to form on your side, there has to be something that I can’t create here.” It was a little frustrating, but she knew she’d be able to work it out if she had enough time. "I..." He nodded, smiling, but concern showed on his face. "He and I are of like minds," Thor said. He hadn't talked to many people on both sides of the door, but given what Silver had said the other week and what Jane was saying now, he was wondering how unique his relationship with Ben truly was. Not for the first time was he grateful that he had found himself in the head of a man he honestly liked and would have counted as a true friend even if they had not been bound together as they were. It was something he would have to think on later. "Heimdall's observatory," he answered. "The Rainbow Bridge. We're working on repairing it." But the work was slow. It required not only the physical power of men to rebuild, but the seiðr of the people and that dormant god-craft that was in his veins. A craft he had not yet harnessed, nor channeled, nor used. Would that he had his father present, the work would go faster, but he'd seen no evidence of the All father, either on the journals or in Asgard. "Have you managed to create one here?" She was glad that he got along so well with his counterpart. Whoever it was likely had the patience of a saint and Jane had the decency to feel bad about how short she’d been with him at first. “Good,” she replied, searching for something else to say. There wasn’t anything though, so she just said, “Good,” again and smiled as she shook her head. What was it about him that turned her into a fifteen year old girl? Darcy would be laughing at her if she was here. Jane pulled away by stepping back just slightly, near enough that his hands could still linger if he wanted, but she needed the space to think. She hadn’t been this distracted from her research since Donald and even then, her work had taken precedence when his had. “You broke the observatory?” Jane was a little impressed with that, but still. There were more important things at hand, like what it was that put everything together. “Can I see? Or talk to someone who’s rebuilding it from your side?” Hopefully that would be enough but she could also do research to see if there were any other Norse mythologies that spoke of a way to traverse between worlds. She shook her head at his question. “The storms are different. I was able to access data from other times when the bridge opened here but there hasn’t been another one since you broke the bridge and it’s hard reverse engineering magic.” If he noticed her brief foray into a fifteen year old girl, Thor did not comment on it. "I broke the bridge," he confirmed. He would have to tell her about that later though as well as why she needed to avoid his brother as much as she could. "I can take you," Thor confirmed. "But you cannot use what you find," he added quietly. If the people of Midgard were to use whatever she found, it would be a signal to the rest of the realms of what they were capable of. It would raise their status, but other races, less benevolent races would be drawn to Midgard. "A bridge on Midgard must be built of your own knowledge and power, not ours." As much as he wanted to give it to her, to see that fire in her eyes when she was passionate and excited about some discovery, he could not give her this. He would not risk her in that way. “What happened?” she finally asked, because with the way they’d left things, she hadn’t expected that he would have been the one to break the bridge. It must have been really bad and that just piqued her curiosity. The fact that he would take her to see the construction was a good sign but the restrictions were a surprise. She didn’t see the dangers, didn’t understand what it would truly mean for Earth to possess that kind of power, so the look of confusion she gave him felt entirely warranted. Completing the bridge would give her the proof she needed to validate her life’s work to the scientific community. She wasn’t looking for accolades of any kind, only for them to take her work seriously. Black holes, time travel, bridges to other universes, they were all things of science fiction, not for real world applications. Never mind the technological advances that came out of fucking Star Wars and Star Trek, assholes, Jane thought angrily. Jane would go to Asgard, explore and ask questions and maybe she would still be able to pull it off. “When can we go?” She probably shouldn’t have been so eager to go to his homeworld considering this was the first time she was seeing him since they were attacked by that metal...thing. She was hesitant to call it a robot. Still, focusing on work helped her forget that she’d kissed him so compulsively that afternoon. It had been completely warranted, she thought, because he’d done so much for her and then he offered himself up to that thing to get it to stop destroying the town. Plus, there was something about the armor that was just sexy and...Jane had to stop that train of thought immediately because she was already starting to worry her lower lip. She really needed Darcy around to distract her. "It is a long tale," he said quietly and he could see there wasn't recognition on her face. She didn't understand why she couldn't bring that knowledge back to Midgard. The surprise showed until she latched onto the fact that she could go and he couldn't help but laugh quietly at her obvious eagerness. "You must promise me, Jane." He had sworn to protect Midgard, and that meant from everyone that would purposely do the realm harm like his brother, and those that would harm it by accident, by not realizing what sort of forces they were harnessing like Jane. Jane just shrugged when he said it was a long story. She certainly thought they had plenty of it, but if he didn’t want to share that was fine with her. Not really, but she’d deal. His insistence that she promise not to use anything from Asgard earned him a highly exasperated look but it quickly became clear that he wasn’t going to back down from that. “Fine,” she huffed. “I won’t use anything from Asgard to rebuild the Bifrost bridge on Earth. Happy now? Can we go?” Jane was impersonating a petulant child, forced to apologize and clearly only doing it in order to get what she really wanted, which was a trip to this mythical land that Thor apparently hailed from. He knew that look. Not from her, but he'd seen it on someone else before and it caused the same pensiveness now that it had then. "Jane..." Thor started to say before he pulled her close again and bent, his cheek to her temple. "You are not ready for Asgard's technology here. I will show you, but if you are to build a bridge, let it come from your own knowledge." He could tell she didn't understand, but on the way there, he could explain it to her. "You're not ready for our technology here," he said calmly as he ran his hands up her arms. The Destroyer had made that plain. They had nothing that could quickly defend themselves and even if the Destroyer had remained longer, it only would have caused more destruction until they had been able to render it ineffective. Thor had no desire for a similar attack from a race that held Midgard in less regard than his own. She had given her word though, and he nodded slowly before opening his arms to her. "You remember how to do this?" They could take the door through to Asgard, but that meant returning to Vegas and the fastest way there was to have him fly them. Her eyes closed and her breath caught in her throat when he pulled her back into his arms again but it lasted for only a moment. She wanted to tell him that they didn’t have the knowledge, that they probably never would until that observatory was rebuilt. “No, but maybe that’s what we need,” Jane murmured, already pulling back to make a quick note on her computer. It was just one word - radio - and that would, oddly enough, remind her about signals and receivers and maybe they just needed to find the right frequency. A theory was all she needed to work off of and maybe her trip to Asgard would give her a better idea of the merit of that theory. Once that was done, she smirked at him. “Oh, I remember.” Despite both of them knowing that her door was right there and that they could get to Passages that way, it seemed he wanted to fly with her. Truth be told, she wouldn’t mind the excuse to be close to him again and flying had been pretty damn cool. Jane stepped back into his arms and wound hers tight around his neck. She wondered if this was how Lois Lane felt when Superman took her for a ride in his arms, or Mary Jane with Spider-Man and his web slinging. “Thanks,” she said softly as she pressed her cheek against the metal of his armor, not quite reaching the crook of his neck. She’d be respectful in Asgard and she’d try to do as he asked. |
