[He picks up on the third ring. Groggily.] Hello?

Hi Jack, Merry Christmas. I woke you?

No, no. [A pause, as he slides up on the bed against the pillows.] Well, maybe slightly. Sorry. I was totally wiped out by the time I got home from the hotel. How about you? How did it go?

Don't apologize, I'm sorry I woke you.

I was okay. ButI got a little inspired. Which brings me to why I'm calling you now, as opposed to calling you later when I was going to call and say Merry Christmas after I had some Boozeynog and my Christmas PJs on.

[With a yawn.] I never have boozeynog around the house. I wish I did. And don't apologize, I'm fine. Merry Christmas to you too. What were you inspired by?

I've been sneaking boozeynog since I was 15. [smile] My one transgression of childhood according to my father.

By Christmas. I used to love Christmas. I've always loved Christmas. I had so many bad ones when I was little, but my first good one with my father was just the jumping off point for a lifetime of wonderful Christmases. But I was going to skip it this year, because I'm selfish and completely ridiculous. [She pauses and sighs, half sad and half whimsical.] But I can't skip my baby's first Christmas. [Smiling brightly] So naturally there's a tree lodged in my stairwell.

If I ever went drinking, it usually wasn't at home. But I guess mom did make an exception for proseco on New Years when I was a teenager, come to think of it.

As it should be. Dare I ask if you actually wanted it in the stairwell?

I didn't "go" much of anywhere until I met Luke, and then Wren, and then Will. I didn't really have friends. So sneaking boozeynog at home was it. I think I was trying to turn into Rapunzel until I met them.

[an actual soft laugh] As much as I love being different, it would look much better in my living room. And I'd like to make this one easier for Santa. I don't intend to wind up on the naughty list for next year before even finishing up this shit excuse for a year.

No friends when you were growing up? None at all? I find that very difficult to believe, you're one of the most charming girls I know.

Would you like some help extracting it from the stairwell, then?

Well I'm glad you think so, it took a long time to get to be the person I am. I didn't get a chance to get out much growing up. Things were much different before I my Papa found me again and I went to live with him. [pause] The bad kind of different. And after that I didn't want to be around people much, my mind and body needed time to heal. Luke and Wren were my first real friends.

Yes please, if you aren't too tired. I don't mind it sitting here until you've woken up more.

Your childhood is sounding more and more like a fairy tale, with you locked up in a tower.

[As smile in his voice.] I appreciate that gesture. [He slides out of bed. Coffee is in order.]

Well considering my childhood started a little late and I walked right into it with a handful of Disney VHS tapes and my father gave me a pink canopy bed, [smile] of course I'm a secret Disney princess, Jack. I just don't quite remember Cinderella ending up a single mom with a Christmas tree wedged in her stairwell. But I think I can work with it. I've still got glass slippers on my side.

I'll put the coffee on. Unfortunately you'll have to climb over the tree to get to it, I can't cook a damn thing, but I make a mean cup of coffee, Jack
