I talked to Evie. I panicked about something when you weren't around, and I called her. She's really not doing okay. [A hint of rustling as she crawls onto the mattress that's still in the attic.] She says Daisy makes her sad, and that she doesn't understand her at all, and that she's a terrible maman. She sounded really, really depressed. She promised to call her doctor, and I asked her to lunch next week. I didn't ask Anais if she was doing something. I didn't even think about contacting her when the baby was born.

[He starts to ask what she panicked about, but stops himself. Hushed honesty.] She's doing a lot better than I would be if I lost you. [...] She's probably going to be sad for a while, but having a support system helps, and calling her doctor is a good idea. They know how to handle that kind of thing. [Pause.] I'm sure she understands, baby. You just gave birth. It's okay to not think of other people right away.

It sounds like she's having trouble with Daisy, connecting, I think. It sounds like that depression thing they warned me about. Daisy's six months old this month. Can you believe it's been that long? Okay, just for tonight I won't think about it. Maybe I won't think about it tomorrow either, if you promise to bring us back a Christmas tree. The lights are still up here from last year, and it doesn't have to be an expensive tree. [A pause.] I don't know if I can feel like she does. I don't know if I can get depressed like that. Maybe depressed is broken for me? [Mock consideration.] Well- maybe- maybe sometimes I want to keep you to myself. Just sometimes.
