Dollhouse shuts down

Joss Whedon knows quality work when he sees it, and he should. As the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog, Whedon is revered as a god in some of the geekier circles.

So when Joss thinks its time to stop production on a show because he doesn't feel its going as well as it should, it's time to stop production. Whedon has put his anticipated new show Dollhouse on hold, believing that some of the scripts just aren't Whedon-worthy, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Joss has apparently been so busy in the director's chair, that he hasn't been able to work on the show's upcoming scripts. So when he finally had a chance to see upcoming scripts, he decided to slow things down a bit to do some rewrites. Production is due to start up again in late September, but since the drama is a midseason entry, Dollhouse is comfortably ahead of schedule.

Dollhouse stars Eliza Dushku as an agent for a secret organization that specializes in imprinting memories and personalities into its agents, which are hired out for espionage, business, and...pleasure. Though most are blissfully unaware of their situation, Dushku's character soon becomes sentient of what's going on, and thus begins some big-time drama and action.

Dollhouse isn't the only midseason Fox show to be put on the skids. 24 has also momentarily shut down production so that its producers can improve the direction of the final episodes. According to the show's bosses, they feel they have the time, so they may as well make it the best darned show it can be. 24 had eight episodes in the can before the writers strike last year, so the political thriller is way ahead of schedule and should experience no delays.

Nothing to worry about here. In fact, if anything it's a sign of great things to come from both shows.

A few more set pictures

There was a tour of the Dollhouse set last week -- lots of descriptions are surfacing, but I liked this one from AfterEllen.

Here are some of the best pics. )

New updates

I've seen a couple of updates in the past few days, I thought you guys might be interested.

Dollhouse pilot, take 2:

"I tend to come at things sideways, and there were a few clarity issues for some viewers. There were also some slight issues with tone – I was in a dark, noir kind of place (where, as many of you know, I make my home), and didn’t bring the visceral pop the network had expected from the script. The network was cool about it, but not sure how to come out of the gate with the ep.”

And from another article comes this:
Added star Eliza Dushku, "And I didn't get to wear my leather pants in the pilot, so that was a deal-breaker."

Oh yeah. That's worth reshooting I think!

Plus we'll get webisodes:
"We are planning to do a series of Webisodes -- literally a full season of them," Whedon said during a Television Critics Association tour of the "Dollhouse" set. "We're planning to do one for every episode produced. Whether we pull that off remains to be seen."

Yay!

50 minutes of Dollhouse!

From the Globe and Mail:

...Fox network is trying something different. Two of its new high-profile shows will air with less ad time (the network will charge sponsors more, accordingly). The idea is that if you keep commercial breaks short, viewers won't stray.

Dollhouse, created by Joss Whedon, and Fringe, a J.J. Abrams production, will turn out 50 minutes of programming in each hour-long episode instead of the usual 42 to 44 minutes.

IMHO, I think this is a great idea -- sci fi shows have such problems developing a full story in the 42 minutes of allotted time. Not to mention ... 8 extra minutes of Joss and Eliza!! I just hope the advertisers will go for it.

I Need Help!

I don't know what I was thinking. I'm starting a new job this week. I run or help run 5 other asylums. I don't have time to hunt down news every day.

What's the point of my whining?

Anyone out there interested in Co-maintaining this asylum with me?

Comments will be screened.

Thank you in advance to the brave soul who is interested. Really all I'm asking is someone willing to do an internet search for new info regarding Dollhouse 2-3 times a week. And then post with a summary and a link.

~Ny

ps...with the writers strike set to begin tomorrow, there may potentially be no new news whatsoever for a very long time. so this could be a really really easy job.
