Thwack. Pause. Thwack. Pause. Thwack.
Standing on the mound was where she felt most at home. She could close her eyes and pretend that she was back home, she could pretend she wasn't a foreigner, she could pretend everyone around her spoke the same language she did, she could pretend that signs and books were written correctly. She could pretend, but that didn't make it true.
Thwack. Pause. Thwack. Pause. Thwack.
She hadn't met any teammates yet, but she was looking forward to it. Baseball was a language that she was perfectly fluent in. She would have given anything for a catcher to appear out of thin air. Not even necessarily her catcher from back home, but anyone that could catch what she was pitching. But she didn't have one. So instead the balls hit the dirt, bounced off the back fence, and she went dutifully after them and then back to the mound to throw another.
