Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Dawn and Open
What: Performing Arts Auditions
Where: The WD Theater (unless it has another name)
When: Friday
Rating: PG (unless someone has a weird audition piece)

Dawn wasn't nervous. She kept telling herself that as her fingers knotted together in their separate pockets. There were so many auditioning though. She had two pieces prepared, along with a song, different from the one she'd use later for the Acapella Group auditions, though she wasn't sure which monologue the judges would like better. Both were truly emotional and the first one required her to cry, to show the range of her abilities, her Aunt Flora had said. Now looking around, she just might cry from nerves.

Putting a determined, cheerful face on, she made her way down the aisle to sign her name up and get a number. Thankfully, she was fifth, not too close to the front, or the end, so she could see what the others performed and the reactions the judges had. The Acapella Group came after Drama, but she signed up there too. She was third on that list. Then she made her way over to another person waiting to audition.

"Is this seat taken?" she asked politely. There were other seats, but small talking helped her forget the flutter of her stomach.

Jude wasn't waiting to audition. He'd been in the A Capella group since his freshman year, and was pretty much the anchor of the tenor section. Perfect pitch was one of those things that tended to come in handy in the harmony lines. He was supposed to be helping judge (and really, he wondered if that meant that he might be asked to be the pitch pipe this year, but he wasn't a senior and he wasn't proud enough to assume he was talented enough to be given special consideration), but right now, he was mostly exhausted after the first week of classes and he still had a Mass tonight to do. So he had taken an open seat and just let the others help hand out numbers as he'd tried to regroup, leaning his forehead on the handle of his cane and debating the merits of pain medicine now, or pain medicine later.

However, at the sound of a girl's voice--talking to him, no less--his head popped up like a startled prairie dog. "What? Oh, no. No, it's not, have a seat."

"Oh thanks," Dawn said with a relieved sigh, sitting. "I'm not really nervous about the auditions, but since I’m new here to boot, I am a little…tremulous... I guess is the word. My stomach gets all fluttery and my hands shake a bit. Though I’m fairly sure of the pieces I picked to audition with at any rate. Normally when I get really nervous I start babbling just a bit, but I haven’t been,” she sighed, “Well I am now, aren’t I?”

For the first time she really looked at the boy sitting next to her. He looked slightly pained. And she hadn’t noticed the cane before. Well, when she was in a flurry of nerves, she never could notice anything else. “Are you all right?” she asked, her tirade of nerves cut off in concern for him.

"Me? No, yes, I'm fine, really. This is normal," Jude said, trying not to fall over himself verbally, thought it was always a challenge. So he just plowed back into music, the one thing he could reliably talk about without sounding like an absolute idiot. "Nerves are normal, though, don't worry about nerves. Everyone gets them and it's good, it's energy, you just channel it into what you're doing. Crowds scare the dickens out of me, but once I start the piece, there's nothing else in the universe." He paused and laughed. "I also close my eyes sometimes. It helps."

Dawn laughed nervously, "Thanks. I'll remember that. Normally, once I start and get really into what I'm doing, I become the character and they're all that matters. Y'know? Like I'm really them, so it doesn't matter that they're judging me. It's just getting to that point that unnerves me.

"Are you auditioning too?"

Jude shook his head. "No, no, I'm not. Mercifully. Or else I'd be a nervous wreck. I'm just helping out, that's all," he explained, awkward as soon as the focus of the conversation turned back to him. So he just kept talking, albeit not about himself. "You sound like a soprano, though, which would be good, we always need good lyric sopranos, someone with the clarity and flexibility in the upper range, otherwise the sound can get sort of muddled. Which sort of defeats the purpose. But am I right? Soprano?"

Dawn clapped her hands delightedly, though she kept it quiet, "Bing, right off the bat. I'm trying out for Drama Club too, which is why I'm mainly nervous, but yes, I sing soprano. Singing actually makes me less nervous, though in the break between auditions I'll be sprinting outside to warm up a bit. There are a couple of parts that I always like to practice before I perform, but then again, the smart people at least try to warm up first right? Oy, there I go babbling again."

Dawn took to fingers to pinch her lips shut in a comical grin, "Sorry," she mumbled around her pinched lips.

That made Jude laugh softly, his eyes crinkling in the corners, even if the crooked corner of his mouth didn't turn up all the way. "Don't be sorry, it's okay, I promise," he reassured her. "You'll do fine, I'm sure. Nobody's looking for perfection, just a good voice and the ability to stay in key, preferably the same one all the way through. That's it. Everything else can be taught, I promise."

"Hm," Dawn said, giving him a wry smile as she released her lips, "That's not much of a confidence boost. To be perfectly honest--"

She was cut off by a woman tapping a microphone on the stage and announcing the beginning of the auditions for freshmen for the Drama Club. Each person would be expected to perform one acting monologue, and than either a song or dance, if they wished. Pieces would be announced before they would begin performing. Dawn nibbled her lip as the first person mounted the stage. Her nerves were back as she began reciting lines in her head.

"You'll do fine," Jude whispered with an encouraging little smile. She seemed like a sweet girl, he hoped her voice matched her personality. Then, with a soft grunt of effort, he managed to haul himself to his feet and made his way over to where the other members of the A Capella group were congregating, making a mental note to watch for the little blonde girl when her time came to sing.

Adella walked into the theater, carrying an upright bass on her back, and an electric bass in her hands. She wasn't sure which they would want to hear, so she carried both.

She liked the sound of the upright bass, but she played the electric instrument when she had to work at the restaurant.

Knox usually strolled with an air confidence wherever he was going as years of building up of his ego caused his shoulders to naturally roll back and his chest to puff up. Most eyes would've been drawn to him, but today was different. Today his shoulders were slumped and his baseball cap was drawn low casting a shadow over his eyes.

His steps were slow and wide and eventually, when he got to a chair near Jude, he settled in a slumped position that made it easier for him to nod off, which was exactly what he wanted to do. "Man this better not take all day."

Jude shook his head, pinching the bridge of his nose, his expression a little strained. He was still thinking about medicine, debating the merits, and Knox's appearance pulled him out of the thoughts before he'd reached any useful conclusion. He was beginning to see a pattern in this and took it as a sign; begrudgingly, to say the least, but he took it all the same. "You should be more kind, these kids are really trying," he said, a very, very gentle rebuke. "I still have a full plate tonight, Saturdays are still obligatory, but this is sort of a break, really."

His index finger curled and he punched up the rim of his cap with a knuckle, revealing a set of eyes looking rather red with deep dark circles making him look sort of sunken in the face. "I have a full plate until my freaking masters, which, to do what I want to do, I don't need, but I need IF I don't ever want to pay for school." He sighed.

Jude was right, in the end, so he took his cap off and placed it on the edge of a music stand in front of the chair beside him. "When do the fish start auditioning for the group?"

"Soon." At least, Jude rather hoped so. He didn't know the first thing about theatre, everyone sounded all right to him, and mostly, he just wanted to get through the A Capella auditions, and the Orchestra auditions. But he glanced at Knox as he took his cap off and frowned, knowing that red-eyed, battered sort of look for what it was. "You do look tired. If you're not well, you can go back to sleep, you know, I can manage. It's really all right," he offered softly.

"I'm not hungover," he declared suddenly. It wasn't a loud declaration, just a random one, because he knew that a red-eyed, tired looking grad boy from a fraternity usually got the rep that he was nothing but a beer-pong loving, keg party, animal.. man. He scowled. "Just to make it clear, pal."

Why was he getting hostile with Jude? The question was, of course, his conscience trying to tell him to shut the hell up and so he sighed and changed the subject. "No way, I got to do the concert band stuff. I mean, I'm basically helping the Professor boil them down to a final group. Yeah. Yeah it'll be all day."

Jude paused, caught a little off-guard by the assertion, but he let it slide. He'd snapped at people before when he was feeling particularly bad. It happened. He wasn't one to get offended at that sort of thing, anyway. People meant to be good, they just struggled sometimes, he knew that. "Okay," he said simply. "I'm sorry if I implied that, I didn't mean to."

"Nah, my bad. I'm just a little cranky, I guess." He guessed? No. He knew. Still, he didn't mean to take it out on ol' Jude. The kid had enough stress on his own, he didn't need Knox's added onto it.

"Okay, when they start the auditions.. kick me. I'm uh, resting my eyes now." Just then he leaned forward to grab his baseball cap, placed it on his head and lowered it over his eyes.

This isn't going to be bad, thought Marie to herself as she walked into the theater, her music, her scripts, and her impressive resume clutched firmly in her manicured fingers. It's just like riding a bike, right?

She hadn't auditioned for anything in years, and the negative effects of this were already starting to manifest. Butterflies in the stomach, panicky re-reads of lyrics and lines to make sure she hadn't forgotten... It had never been like this for her before. Then again, she had never gotten a large part. But perhaps the fact that she had been a chorus member in large, prominent productions in New York would work for her. Or maybe it was the fact that her career choice depended on this. If she was going to study music, she should be in the A Capella group; if she wanted to be an actress, drama club just made sense.

Despite all this, she put on a brave face as she strode into the theater. After all, it's not becoming to let people see how nervous you are. She signed in for both A Capella and drama club and found her way over to the small group of students that was beginning to collect.

"Hello," she said, flashing her dimpled smile at everyone. "May I join you?"

Dawn looked up from her clutched hands with a smile. It was somewhat tight on the corner of her lips, but hey, she was still a bit nervous. She only had two people in front of her in the auditions now.

"Please," Dawn said, "There's a seat right here." She pointed to the seat that Jude had recently vacated. Her eyes turned to the stage one more time to see the next person mounting the stairs. Her stomach clenched a bit. She was next.

Forcing herself to look away, she asked, "So what are you auditioning for?"

Tristan bounced into the hall where they said the auditions were and froze, the smile fading from his face. The room was way more crowded than he'd thought it would be, and the competition suddenly looked a lot more worrying. He wasn't even sure he wanted to be in the Drama Club, but his mother had said he should try it out, and he'd always taken on the comic roles when the siblings tried to put on little plays...Besides, he knew it'd do him good to do something that didn't involve numbers and equations occasionally. The girl who signed him up for the audition gave him an odd look, but he didn't stop to explain himself. Noting a group of girls off to the side waiting to go on stage, he hesitantly made his way over.

"Uh, is this where we need to wait, for the Drama Club auditions?"

Marie took the seat Dawn pointed to, grateful to give her legs a break before they turned to jelly and she collapsed from these god-forsaken nerves. Ugh, wasn't there some prescription you could take for this kind of stuff?

"Oh, I'm auditioning for Drama Club and A Capella," she said, trying fervently to ignore the butterflies fluttering about in her stomach as she said this. "What about you?" Maybe--hopefully!--this girl would be auditioning for one of those groups, too. It'd be nice if they both made it. She seemed like the kind of person Marie would get along with.

But before Dawn could answer, a very young looking boy approached them nervously. He wanted to know if he was in the right place for the auditions, but Marie was too overwhelmed by this young boy's adorableness to answer. Instead, she instantly and unthinkingly blurted out, "Oh my gosh, you're so adorable! Do you go to school here?"

Dawn was about to respond to both before the girl beside her started gushing over the cuteness of the boy in front of them. She laughed quietly before she said to him, "Yes it is. I'm waiting for my turn for Drama, then A Capella."

As she spoke it actually turned into her turn. Swallowing hard, she stood as her name was called. "Here, have my seat. I'm up," she took a deep breath, "Wish me luck." She mounted the stage and suddenly the audition had begun.

She performed a monologue from A Midsummer Night's Dream, one of Helena's passionate ones that still brought tears to her eyes and down her cheeks as she performed it. Silence as the judges contemplated. They asked if she could sing and she nodded. Would she perform a piece? She nodded again. Musical accompaniment? Dawn handed the pianist her music. He looked at her with raised eyebrows before nodding, going over the sheet music quickly. Dawn took her place once more before the judges.

The intro music was famous, not many would not know it which made it harder to fake if she missed a word or a note. She closed her eyes and breathed, taking Jude's advice, before her pure soprano voice began, Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again from Phantom of the Opera. Somewhere in the middle, the piano music disappeared, but Dawn didn't falter, continuing without it.

"No, I'm just here to audition and I'm still in highschool." There was a distinct note of sarcasm in Fish's voice. He hated being called adorable, especially by strangers. "Of course I go to school here. As of last Monday, anyway. I'm Tris Fisher." He waved good luck to the girl who let him have her seat, then sat down to watch her audition.

"Wow. She's amazing." He breathed. "I'll never be that good. Can't sing to save my life. And I'm not adorable, not really. What's your name?"

Marie had a hard time not sticking her lower lip out in a pout at his biting sarcasm. She hadn't meant to offend him! She would have said something, but then Dawn was making her way up to the stage. Not wanting to be rude, she kept silent and watched, listened. She was good. Really good. The butterflies started banging about her insides again.

"Yeah, she is," she said quietly. Hopefully he could say the same thing about her once her audition was through. "I'm Marie Bonfamille. And fine, you're not adorable." She rolled her eyes. "But you seem way too young to be in college. How old are you?"

"Sixteen. In February." Fish reluctantly admitted. "Getting an early start. You're a freshman too? Freshwoman I should say, I guess. Uh...D'you know how many people they're gonna take?" If the other girl was the general level of the competition, he didn't have a chance.

He was fifteen?! How did that even work? Marie tried not to gape stupidly at him. He must have been really smart to be in college at age fifteen. His IQ was probably, like, double hers.

"Yeah, I'm a 'freshwoman'," she said, giggling a little bit at the invented term. But her giggle turned into a small frown at his next words. "I don't know," she said, biting her lip. She glanced at the stage, watching the audition in progress briefly. "To be honest, I haven't auditioned for anything since--" She paused briefly, catching herself before she said 'I was a little kid.' She didn't want to offend the young man sitting next to her (he was enjoyable company so far) and instead finished with a lame "--a long time ago."

Fish shrugged and grinned. "I've never auditioned for anything. Never done any kind of stage-stuff at all, except for Christmas shows we had to be in." He made a face, remembering being something like the fourth cow on the left in the Nativity play. "You've done this before, I'm guessing? The acting and singing thing?"

He'd been told by his sister Viv that he needed to do something that wasn't science or he'd grow up 'emotionally dead and miserable', as she'd put it. Easy for her to say. He looked up at the stage. "It's kinda scary."

Marie grinned at Fish's obvious dislike for past Christmas pageants. She remembered the 'fun' Christmas shows they'd put on at her school. "Yeah, I've been in a few shows," she said, her smile tenative now. She didn't like bragging about these things. Bragging about her monstrosity of a condo back home in New York or her expensive shoe collection, sure. But when it came to her talents, she was actually humble.

"I doubt you've heard of anything I've been in," she continued. "I've had a lot of chorus roles and small, random parts."

"What, like professionally on a real stage where people pay money to watch whatever it is?" Fish was appropriately impressed, even awed. "That's so cool. So what'd you prepare?" He glanced up at the stage, wondering if the girl who'd sat in his chair before him would rejoin them, now she was done. He also wondered when his own turn would come.

"Yeah," Marie replied, the hesitance slipping from her features. She smiled more broadly now. Memories of being on stage began to trickle their way to the front of her mind, reminding her of how much fun she'd had.

"I'm doing a monologue from You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and I'm singing a song called The Alto's Lament." Both were comedic, and she knew that was a no-no, but she had little in the way of sheet music or monologues, and most of them were geared toward children's parts from when she was younger. And since this was a joint audition, why not pick a song in which she could showcase her acting as well as her wide singing range? And her monologue... She was trying to be a little original, but it could easily backfire. She'd just have to see.

All too soon, she heard someone calling her name. The butterflies that had started to calm down jumped to life once more. She took a deep breath and then flashed a bright, dimpled smile at Fish. "That's me!"

She introduced herself appropriately and announced her audition pieces. Her monologue was short, but in those few minutes she was very much Sally Brown as she questioned her teacher about the C she'd received on her coathanger sculpture. She easily transformed into a Broadway diva for her song, adding comedic touches and belting out her high "C" just as well as her low "E". Then, before everyone could see how badly her knees were shaking, she thanked the judges and then hurried back to her seat next to Fish, her heart crashing against her ribs from the adrenaline rush.

[Note: You can see her audition pieces in her journal... Just in case you're curious. :)]
