Remember that time I asked after creative Discworld fan asylums?

There weren't any Discworld-specific and of general interest (though there was and is [info]teatime_fans!), so I made some.

Two extra asylums? *sigh* I hate how you have to join a million things just to get fic....

BTW, you might want to remove the MPAA based ratings. Not only are they bad because of the whole non-Americans don't really get them issue, but they are also the general target of C&Ds.

Well, hopefully there will be fic in both - and it's only two... I thought it better to make one smut and one not because I know there are a lot of people in this fandom who are all ewwsmut and another lot of people who don't like fic at all. General fanfiction communities - multi-fandom, I mean - often also prove impractical because your flist will be spammed by a lot of fandoms you never heard of or don't care about.

What's a C&D?

The MPAA ratings are widely used by fans to rate fic and art, and are much better known than the FF.net K, K+ and so on ratings. Furthermore, the latter is used for fic, whereas the former is often (mis)applied to all sorts of creations. I really don't think there should be a problem with non-Americans not recognising them. I can't think of any more recognisable system, for one. What would you suggest?

Thanks for the input, btw, I really appreciate it!

C&D is a Cease and Desist. Basically, it's when the lawyer of someone who has intellectual property contacts you and tells you 'stop doing this, or we're taking you to court', but in more legal language. Usually most fans will stop whatever it was then*, because even the risk of civil court is kind of scary.

* Or their webhosts will tell them to stop or get kicked off the server. Webhosts don't want to deal with legal issues much either.

Oh good lord. That's the sort of thing we moved to IJ to avoid! If fic is illegal then we must take it down - if it is not, then we shouldn't need to sneak about with it. As I understand it, it's in a legal grey area, and the policy is that if it is complained about, it is taken down. As it is, I think I'll keep the MPAA rating system, since it's what's used in fanfic generally, and if we get complaints and get put down then so be it - it won't be because I did something different than all the other fic communities.

I think I will put a disclaimer in the community info, though...

By the way, are you over 18? It's not in your user info and need an official answer before I can approve your membership. Sorry.

It's not in there? Huh. Must have turned it off. I'll turn it back on for the future, but yes. I am over 18.

C&D = cease and desist from a lawyer. Basically, they don't want us using their ratings because it dilutes them, or something silly like that. The reason that ff.net and several other largish sites don't use the G-NC17 ratings anymore is because they don't want to get into legal difficulties. It's probably not a big deal with small sites like IJ asylums, but since they have specifically said something, I encourage others not to use them. http://community.livejournal.com/fandom_lawyers/10204.html

As for the other stuff, I just like to grumble every now and then. Actually, since the rules implicitly say "no crossposting," I'm happy! Don't mind me :)

Ahhhhhh, cease and desist from MPAA itself. I see. I didn't know that. In that case, I think I will change the system to the ff.net one.

Er, the rules don't say "no crossposting", actually - just "keep in topic"! But by crosslinking the three communities and drawing the rating line between the two creative ones we might indeed avoid crosspostage.

And yes, that's what I meant-- it's not specifically "no crossposting", but the way it's set up, we shouldn't get the crazy 10 asylum spam entries I've had in other fandoms on that other journaling site. (A little cross-posting is one thing, but some people just go overboard with it.)

Hah, I've crossposted like crazy sometimes on LJ, just because I joined all these communities for different reasons and, what do you know, then I end up drawing/writing something that's fit to be posted on five. Say it's a Monstrous Regiment femslash drabble for a femslash100 challenge - that could also go on cheesemongers, and saffic. Hobbit femslash - saffic, bodice_laces, lotr_fanfiction. It's a jungle and it makes me feel kinda pushy even though, on the other hand, one should help keep the comms active and all that. Goodness.
