It had been so long since Attie needed to travel after curfew that she'd forgotten how unsettling it could be, especially with the extra security that had been put in place in the past few weeks. The war had been coming for a long time now but this was the first time she'd ever seen civilian activity like this since the riots. There would surely be more, and soon.
She managed to make it back with little harassment at the check points, they didn't tend to give too much trouble to well dressed women, in fact they hardly gave trouble to any one well dressed. The City Center seemed to be in a state where wealth was the only thing that really mattered, you could always buy what you needed but now you could buy who ever, and whatever you liked. It was more than just a little disgusting. When she reached the steps of her home she could see the red light from the security pad on the wall flashing through the glass in the door. When the police had called her to tell her the alarm had been tripped they said that they had already been to the property and they didn't see anyone or anything but a broken window pane on the second story, must have just been some kids out causing trouble after curfew, there had been a petty crime wave recently they'd said. The red light indicated the alarm was armed and she didn't hear the loud screaming sound it made when any of the sensors were tripped so she pulled out her keys to unlock the door and braced herself for the noise. It really was a top of the line system, besides the doors and windows there were sensors though out the house that would react to movement through any of the door ways or at the top or bottom of the stairs and there were very few people who had the codes to disable the sensors, her, Ben, Ruby and Icarus but she was the only one who could reset an armed system. All people that Attie knew with out a doubt would guard the code with their life.
When she swung the door open Attie was ready to rush inside and disable the alarm but before she had gotten more than two steps into the house she stopped in her tracks. There was no alarm, there was no loud piercing noise like there should have been. Shit.
