Something that vaguely resembles an introduction
I was diagnosed with Type II in 2003 after spending an unpleasant weekend in the hospital when my roommates thought I was having a heart attack. Still don't know why I was having chest pain, since my heart is as good as someone's 20 years younger than I am, but my blood sugar was over 600 mg/dl. Tried controlling it with diet and metformin for nearly 2 years, took Avandia for less than a week (congestive heart failure is NOT fun), and am now using Lantus and Novolog. I take 44 units of Lantus at bedtime and 1 unit of Novolog per gram of carbs at meals (plus 1 unit per 20 mg/dl over 140, if I'm reading high).
My readings vary a bit. I usually wake up with my sugar around 90 mg/dl, am around 130 or 140 at mealtimes, and between 140 and 190 at bedtime. Last night, though, after a dinner of ravioli, I was at 87 at bedtime. Had to eat a couple peanut butter sandwiches to make sure I didn't go low while sleeping. I do not deal well with being low.
My secret to good blood sugar control was to get rid of my bad roommate and start eating foods I like instead of what the roommate liked. Within two weeks of the roommate moving out, my blood sugar had dropped to where it is now, after nearly three years of it hovering consistently between 140 and 200 mg/dl, no matter what I did to bring it down.
