Author's note: In response to the btvsats_love prompt "sire and/or childe" for the week of Monday, August 21 - Sunday, August 27, 2006. I would like to continue this, but since I just kinda wrote it from scratch without an outline or even a plot in mind ahead of time, it will be a long time coming, so please...be patient for me to come up with something. Thanks!
Distribution: Archive sites, etc., of which I am a member. Anyone else, please ask. If you're willing to share the archive info with me, I will probably say yes. Thanks for your interest!
"Angel?"
"Yeah?"
An audible swallow, a shift of position, then, "I'm scared. I'm bloody scared."
Angel glanced around at the post-apocalyptic dust covering the wrecked building in which they'd taken shelter. He listened to the hammering heart inside his childe's chest, smelled his fear, and then listened to the only slightly calmer beat of his own. He still couldn't understand how they could have their pulses and the need to breathe, yet still retain all their vampire senses.
He pulled Spike's back closer to his front. "I know, William. I am, too."
"What do we do?" Spike continued. "You know they turned us human just so we'd be easier to kill."
Angel placed a gentle kiss at the back of his neck. "No, we don't know that. For all we know, this could be the shanshu...thing--prophecy." He nuzzled the spot his lips had just left. "This could be the Powers That Be rewarding us for sticking it to the Senior Partners, their arch enemies."
"Do you honestly believe that?"
Angel sighed. "No," he reluctantly admitted.
Spike returned the sigh. "I thought not." He settled a little into Angel's embrace. "So, I ask again: Now, what?"
Angel ground his teeth. "I don't know, okay?"
Spike winced a little at the tension in his sire's voice. "All right, all right." He rolled his shoulders, a bit insecure at the tone of his sire's voice. This was not the time to anger the one ally he had in the universe.... "Was just askin'. Sorry."
Another sigh. "No, I'm sorry. I'm just--Well, like you said: I'm scared." The second sigh he let out was long and shaky.
Spike turned in his arms to study him with clear blue eyes for a long moment. Angel found that he couldn't avert his eyes from his childe's gaze, though he desperately wanted to. Those blue eyes always seemed to reach straight into him and see everything.
Spike cupped Angel's cheek with his hand and favored him with a gentle smile that crinkled the corners of his eyes just a touch. "Then we'll be scared together." With that, he leaned in and tenderly placed his lips to Angel's.
Angel sobbed and wrapped his hand around Spike's neck with his thumb massaging at the hinge of Spike's jaw, his other arm tightening fiercely around Spike's back. In seconds, they both had tears rolling down their cheeks.
When they came up for air, Angel stroked Spike's face, gazing down into his eyes. "Together," he said. "Always, my childe."
Spike nuzzled the top of his head up under Angel's chin and purred, amazing them both that he could still do so. "Always, sire. Always together."
