Week Six: Tuesday

Who: Libby and anybody/everybody!
What: Library Winter Slumber Party
When: Early Tuesday Evening
Where: Sundance Library

The shelves looked nice enough to the untrained eye; everything had been righted and the books put back up somewhat close to where they belonged. with her arrival Saturday, Libby really did not have all that much time to set her beloveds in their proper order, but the fact that they were off the floor gave her some comfort. With that task out of the way, she had spent the day shoving desks and chairs against the walls to make enough room on the upper floor for everyone to congregate, or at least enough room for the attendees to establish little territories to keep some stability. To say Libby felt nervous would have been a great understatement. She was eager to bring all the tribes together, but knew such a thing would not happen easily. Who could guess what would happen that evening, or if anybody besides her own tribe would show up.

Though she had requested that everyone bring their own provisions and sleeping materials, Libby had gathered what extra blankets, pillows, and food she could get. With winter already upon them (and it wasn't looking too bright either), they had to be careful not to be too lenient with their rationing. Then again, how could she expect the other tribes to trust the Wolves if they were stingy with their own supplies? For their little world to remain safe, everyone would need to cooperate. It would only take one weak link to destroy everything they had built.

Rolling up the sleeves of her cream turtleneck sweater, she made a simple sign on a white piece of paper, which read, "All are welcome!" and stuck it to the glass of the front door to the library. Then, with an old shawl wrapped around her shoulders, Libby paced the rows of bookshelves, reorganizing the books into their proper order, and waited for her guests to arrive. "If tempers raged and a fight broke out, at least the activity would keep everybody warm should the heating fail," her queer sense of humor pointed out. That was a main point, after all: work together, keep warm.

Week Six -- Sunday to Saturday

Week Six-- Sunday to Saturday

Month: First week in December, Sunday to Saturday
Year: 2020

Overview:

The Mountain Lions' second cage fight was a great success. To a lot of people's surprise Watts, one of the female Mountain Lions volunteered to fight and was challenged by a drifter whose name was not discovered. The girls had a great go-round but in the end it was the drifter who prevailed. The Mountain Lions once again feel fairly secure on their hold within the city. Not only has the return of the electricity boosted their confidence (even if it has been sketchy) but the enormous number of winnings they raked in from fighting bets has replaced any holes in their pride.

Last week's power outage scared more than a few people and surfaced many old tensions between tribes. Thankfully the power more or less restored itself late Friday morning. Although the power has returned it has been sketchy at best. This week the power will be steady enough to keep heaters running in places where the electrical heating still works but lights will flicker on and off for hours at a time.

On Tuesday of this week recently returned Libby, of the Wolves, is hosting a slumber party at the Sundance Library on the Wolves' turf. The theme is inter-tribal peace. Libby has returned from her travels and has a message for all of those willing to hear it.

The weather this week reminds everyone that it is in fact winter, and Wednesday's snow leaves enough of itself on the ground to provide a fodder for jovial snowball fights and snowman building. Everyone knew that sooner or later Wyoming would have its winter, but not many expect the weather that Thursday afternoon brings with it.

It's barely been a week since the River Runners retreated to their winter camp on the edge of the Mountain Lion's turf. Although the winter camp provides shelter and electricity the walls are thin and the space heaters are acting finicky from the power dropouts. On Saturday the roof of the barn that stores the winter supplies for the River Runners finally succumbs to the blasting cold winds of the blizzard. A patch of the roof comes loose and blows away leaving a portion of the River Runner's stock exposed to the unrelenting snow and wind. The weather will be so bad that it will be next to impossible to safely get to the barn, let alone assess and repair the damages. They will just have to wait out the storm and see what is left of their stock when it's done.

Although the River Runners will perhaps be the hardest hit by the storms the other tribes suffer in their own ways. The tribes are more or less home-bound while the snow falls, some doors will even freeze shut. The Carrion huddle in their heated hospital away from the cold sewers. Many of the hospital windows are broken or missing all together so the warm places are rather limited. It's too cold and blinding outside for anyone to access whatever storage has been laid up for the winter so most people will be left with whatever they have in their homes. The main concern of the Wolves is the well-being of the livestock that they were not able to get into the barn. There's no telling what will happen to the animals left out in such trying conditions.

Most tribe members stay put in an effort to conserve resources and energy. Hopes that the storm will pass are waning when conditions continue through Saturday night.

Week Events:

Tuesday: Sleepover at the Sundance City Library on the Wolves' territory. All tribes invited.
