Week 15- Wednesday
Who: Lawliss and Jax
Where: Jackals Lodge
When: Afternoon
Why: Discussing the upcoming meeting

Lawliss stretched his back, listening to the bones crack as he moved. That sound alone made him feel old. Waiting for Jax did too and Lawliss was one of the few who would dare to comment on it to his face.

Jax’s decision to include Lawliss as his back up for this leaders meeting seemed a weird thing, tactically speaking. It was normal really, for Lawliss to have his back; it was part of what made him useful to his tribe. He was also slightly more approachable than Jax and willing to act as a go between if the request was reasonable, but by being visible he would likely be raised above the level of a simple mercenary in the eyes of the tribal leaders of this new territory. It would make blending in for recon all the more difficult.

However, Lawliss knew what he was there for, to make sure Jax remained on a controlled level and if needs be to put the fear of God into the other leaders. As soon as Jax told him what the meeting was about anyway.

Lawliss smiled to himself, from mercenary to trusted enforcer, he muttered his thoughts under his breath. “I should ask for a raise.”

They'd had too close of a call yesterday for Jax to be sitting around. He'd only discovered one of the Wolf leaders trying to snoop around the mine. He was confident that he'd convinced Grey that they were merely keeping the mine closed for health reasons, but he knew that such a deception was likely to be questioned again.

He'd spent most of the morning working on plans at the mine to further disguise the weapons building program that he was working out with Junk. As busy as he was with those things he was eventually forced to stop his work to meet with Lawliss to discuss the nature of tonight's all important leader meeting. It was absolutely neccesary that the thing be pulled off as convincingly and positivley as possible.

Jax opened the door to Azrael's old office and shut it behind him. "Sorry I'm late. Were you saying something?" Jax took the seat next to Lawliss, instead of sitting behind the desk. If Jax had a friend, Lawliss was it, and so Jax would often be a lot less informal with him than he would with his other underlings.

“I was wondering about a pay rise, seeing as I’ve been upgraded to bodyguard duty, and maybe some dark glasses.” Lawliss’ tone was still soft and lazy as he teased his leader. “I heard we had an issue yesterday? Will it cause problems with the meeting?” Lawliss’ joking mood passed quickly as the business at hand rose to the front of his mind.

He shrugged his jacket off and moved to hang it off the back of the door, but not sitting down. He considered Jax a friend, but they were working and that put Jax in charge. “I’m having difficult time trying to plan how best to protect you with not knowing enough about all this…and yeah I know you don’t need protecting, but I like to be useful.”

Lawliss knew very well that Jax was far better trained in combat than he was, but Jax also had other things to concentrate on, so he had a real job to do. “I mean who am I to be, kick ass, silent type, emissary, or indolent lout?”

"A pay raise? Why should I grant you anything more than you have. It's one thing to look tough and another to be so." Jax grinned and nudged the toe of Lawliss' boot with his own. "Yeah, you could say that." Jax expression changed to one of annoyance when yesterday's "issue" was brought up.

Jax played the various details of yesterday's encounter over in his mind. "It was a close call, but I'm pretty sure that I was able to convince the nosy bastard that we've closed off and kept a guard on the mine for health reasons. Thankfully the smell of those Lion leaders hasn't faded much." It was also a good thing that the bodies were all at the bottom of the pit with the other hundreds of bodies. There was after all no need for Grey to have recognized the congealing head of one of his former acquaintances, even if it was an enemy's.

"You're useful Lawliss, you always have been. That's why you're still here." Sure, they were friends, but to Jax - all people were disposable. Jax laughed lightly and leaned back in his chair, brushing his chin with his fingers. "When I visited Jed, the River Runner leader, he seemed to best respond to me being open and friendly. Though I made it obvious that we do have some weight behind us."

Lawliss chuckled. “You’re my tribal leader, not my genie, thus I don’t need you to grant me anything.” He teased back, scrubbing the end of his boot on the floor, mirth dancing in his dark eyes. His eyes darkened as he listened, glad that no one else had needed to die. He’d needed the rest last night, so being dragged up to help with that would have pissed him off.

“Ahh, death stench is useful, and a valuable asset if we need them to see what we are capable of…Or are we using the remaining leader for that?” Lawliss had felt sorry for the girl, but still knew that she was being kept alive for a reason, and it wasn’t because Jax was feeling charitable, Lawliss knew him better than that. “And what’s down there isn’t healthy, so not exactly a lie.” The words, the images, none of it bothered him, not only had he seen and smelled worse, he’d done worse and would continue to. “And if they come back?”

“Don’t worry Jax I know what I am, I would dream of not being useful.” Lawliss’ tone was soft but his eyes were serious, being no use to Jax was dangerous, at least for most of them. “So I’m the muscle, that works fine, I can do quiet and menacing with the best of them.” Lawliss listened as he spoke about the other leader. “Open and friendly, huh? How naïve are some people, can you keep it up for long enough?”

"And don't forget it." Jax replied only half-jokingly to the genie remark.

Jax let out a dark laugh when Lawliss asked about Danni. Danni. Honestly, he wasn't quite sure about what he was going to do with her. Though he was sure, that whatever it was it would end in her death. A weak toy was only fun for so long, and a useful tool could all too quickly become the worst liability. "I'm still deciding on her, but if you think of anything particularly cruel, exciting or even useful let me know." He paused, "If they come back..." Jax thought for a moment, "If they come back, I'll deal with it. There are ways to get around the whole world knowing what we're doing there. Besides, we can always simply come up with another fabrication, or a cover-up job to keep them satisfied."

Jax's gaze met Lawliss' with a knowing look. Jax was aware that of all the people in the tribe, Lawliss understood him the best. It seemed as though Lawliss had figured him out the moment they'd met. In turn, Jax was an iota more open with Lawliss than with anyone else, regardless of their position in the tribe. "I believe I can. I've actually found myself enjoying this game of cat and mouse from time to time." He sighed, "Though at the same time it feels pathetic to me." He leaned back and slid down a bit in his chair. "I like to be genuine with my enemies...give them a fair chance in a sense." He thought back to all of his time as a double agent. At least in those instances he'd been able to find relief in the occasional kill, but with this new life in Sundance he had to wait for so long or risk an army coming down on his head.
