Week 15 Friday
Who: Wren, Windchaser, Cat and whoever else
Where: By the river
When: Sunset
Why: Because Wren's birthday requires celebration

Windchaser had decided at fairly short notice that some event was needed to clear the air after the war, and to keep her busy. She needed to do something other than wallow and the best was she’d ever distracted herself was to focus on other people. Wren’s birthday was a perfect reason for both.

Too short notice and probably too personal to take place at the trading post, a quick parlez with Wren’s new ‘he’s not my boyfriend, honestly’ had secured some relatively safe space on the river bank and by bartering and networking like crazy people Windchaser and Black Cat had managed to gather enough stuff and drop enough ‘bring your own bottle and a gift if possible and DO NOT tell Wren’ type hints, to drum up what looked like it might well turn out to be a decent surprise party. It was officially an open to all invite, though if any of the Jackals turned up, they might not prove so welcome. Now it was just a case of hoping no one had blabbed and figuring out how to get Wren down there without her suspecting.

Windchaser really hoped that Wren would like the ornate Chinese kite Windchaser had received while she was still a drifter for treating a broken leg. She loved it and had carried it around with her, but Wren was definitely the best person to hand it on to.

Wren had been feeling pretty much like an alien for the past few days. It was her birthday and it was the day she realised she was very much sick of walking into a room and having it be hushed into silence like she was some sort of plague. She'd been spending alot of time down by the boats with Cat and had thought that perhaps the gossip had spread but her tribe had never been too concerned with keeping tactful secrets, so the hush hush that was falling over a room everytime she set foot in it was puzzling and to say the least, a little hurtful.

Even if it was about Cat she'd sworn up and down to Windchaser that he wasn't her boyfriend, to come out would mean that everyone would be a part of the relationship and her selfish side begged for just a little more time with him to herself. She wouldn't rat her best friend out...though if the kids had gotten to her there was no telling just what they'd pulled to get her to spill the beans. Children were crafty.

As Wren walked from her bedroom (after not sleeping there for several nights, shamefully)she noticed a distinct lack in people around the house, even Grey was missing and Yeates and English had gone. Those two had been having some issues since English had been injured in the fighting, her leg was busted and a general depression followed the both of them around like a cloudy grey aura. Grey himself was looking even surlier than usual, leader type crap she suspected, nothing out of the ordinary these days. But everyone else? Nobody was unanimously this busy. "Okay assholes," Wren whispered approaching the kitchen, "Where have you all gone?"

Gem was absolutely giddy! She'd never done anything like this before and she was looking forward to surprising Wren- e en if she'd never actually met the woman before. But she was Windchaser's friend so she had to be pretty nice, didn't she? From what she'd heard, Wren was a bit of a goof. And she loved kids. Gem had managed to piece together a bit of leatherwork as a gift. The little bunny-shaped backpack was a patchwork of soft suede in all different colors. It was rather adorable if Gemini had to say so herself. Now she was at the riverbank with Windchaser and a man named Black Cat and a few other people who were intent on surprising Wren on her birthday. She didn't know what to expect or when they were expecting Wren so she was content to just hide whenever Windchaser told her too and jump out when everyone else did. This would be so much fun! Although she was a bit worried about what Saint would say when he found out she'd run off.....

Windchaser settled beside Black Cat, waiting and smiling softly at Gemini. It was good of her to come to a party for a woman she’d never met before, but Wren deserved it and she knew they’d get on like a house on fire. If Wren found the note she’d left anyway.

On the Wolves kitchen table, Windchaser had left a scribble. Hey Wren, headed down to the riverbank to pick up some supplies, I kinda need help bringing them back to camp, promise I’ll share when I get back. You promised I could meet Cat too ;)
Wind

Now she just hoped that Wren would show up, she knew throwing the B word out there would ruin the surprise, but if Wren was in enough of a funk because she thought people had forgotten, then it would all be for nothing.

Unthinkingly, Windchaser reached to fiddle with the rosary, which was no longer there, to calm her down. That act made her blink back tears, but she shook them away and forced herself to smile at the others, praying that others would show up.

Wren entered the kitchen slowly, the silence eerie in the big farm house, not even a whisper of small feet running around the house on the top or bottom floor. There was never a quiet moment in the house and the whole thing had a very twilight zone feel. The hairs on the back of her neck prickled.

Approaching the table Wren noticed the note folded neatly on the table, her name written across it in very familiar handwriting. Wren read it quickly internally wincing as Windchaser mentioned Cat, she had promised, but she was reluctant that the day to share him with the world had come so soon. Putting the note in her jeans pocket she grabbed her blue jumper from the rack of jackets beside the back door and headed towards the river bank. It was warm out, not really hot anymore but her duffel coat was able to lay safely under the bed, not quite ready for use yet. She liked this time of year.

Her feet trudged along the gravel around the farm then sloshed through the grass towards the river, a little part of her was excited that she was going towards Cat's place. If nobody else was going to celebrate her birthday she knew that he would at least be persuaded to entertain and help 'celebrate' with her. The thought made her a little giddy inside and she hid a naughty little smile. She could see the river ahead and her pace increased a little as she aimed for Cat's boat. Reaching it in no time she was climbing over the side near the dock, pulling the door open and striding in like she owned the place, "So like my friends suck," she pouted.

Black Cat heard her, from his place further down the bank, where everyone had clustered back in the shrubbery to hide from Wren, who had been so busy stamping about feeling sorry for herself that she hadn’t actually seen the others. He almost pitied her, remembering the feeling of thinking that a day so special to you had been forgotten. However, when Cat had carried that feeling, there had never been anyone hiding in the bushes to yell surprise. Since the death of his family, no one had remembered his birthday, to the extent that he barely remembered it herself and expected nothing to be done about it.

Black Cat mentioned for quiet from the others before he answered her. “I’m out here, Songbird.” He called to her, feeling a flash of warmth pass through him at the ease that she’d walked onto the boat, his home. He couldn’t keep the smile off his face at the thought. He’d never meant to feel this way about anyone, to risk hanging around for a war, but, now as he heard her voice, he was pretty sure he was screwed.

He looked over at her friend, Windchaser, he’d been surprised when she approached him about the party. As far as he knew Wren hadn’t told anyone about them, let alone attached enough importance that someone would ask him about planning a party for her. For a moment, he’d considered denying any involvement between them, but he‘d realised, he didn’t want to. So, there it was he’d ended up working with this sad eyed girl, who’d turned out to be a firecracker, on his first ever surprise party that had to be paid for by barter.

Wren's pout was lost when she stumbled into the kitchen area and discovered her lover was not there, lazing around on a chair looking like sex on legs and twice as tasty as she remembered him. Instead she heard his voice float from outside of the boat, and as shivers attacked her spine she retreated back and cast a long look down the bank.

As he'd said he was standing there, relaxed and confident, like he owned the place. He truly was delicious. Shoving her hands in her pockets she sauntered down to greet him. "What are you doing down there?" she reached him, and it took too long for her liking, but when she did come face to face with him the pout melted from her face and in it's place took a smile. "Tell me later, kiss me now," she grinned slipping her arms around his shoulders.
