Week Fourteen - Friday
WHO: Hawk and Ruby
WHAT: They run into each other around the gardens
WHERE: The Gardens
WHEN: Afternoon
RATING: PG for mention of stitches?
STATUS: Incomplete // Closed

When she'd risen early in the morning, Ruby had been concerned that the day before was all a dream. But it wasn't. Bear's words still rang clear and true in her head. I love you and I want to be with you. It was, needless to say, something for her to be very happy about. It wasn't every day that you found that someone special to love who loved you back. Especially in a world like theirs. She was extremely lucky and extremely fortunate to have found that person for herself. Her happiness showed in the smile that seemed like it couldn't disappear from her features. Not that there was a thing wrong with that. Tink had noticed that smile the moment Ruby had come home and had immediately asked the question that was weighing on her mind. Had Bear told her that he liked her? Had he kissed her? The answer to both questions had been a yes. Apparently, Tink's matchmaking had paid off. Not that she was going to tell anyone that. It was a secret victory!

Ruby hadn't had much to do in the morning, just cleaning and bits of busywork. But early in the afternoon someone came to tell her that someone had hurt themselves in the garden. Cut themselves on a tool. Dutiful as always, she brought her first aid kit. In it there was every bit of medical supplies that she had that could be used on a cut. On the more severe side, there was thread and a needle for stitches. On the less severe side, there was rubbing alcohol and, of course, bandages. It turned out that stitches were necessary, though the cut wasn't extremely deep. Thankfully enough, it was a rather clean cut, so all she had to do was clean off the blood and numb up the spot before putting the stitches in. "Be more careful next time, alright?" she said, covering the stitches with the protective tape to help keep them closed. The young man nodded to her, thanking her. But it was her job, she didn't need to be thanked.

Figuring that it was better than going back to her treehouse, Ruby found a good spot in the gardens to sit down. She set down her kit and just sat down to relax. If anyone happened by, she'd be more than happy to talk to them. But for the moment, she just enjoyed the peace and quiet.

Hawk had been merciful once again and left Nova alone at the house without any supervision. She had insisted that she would be fine and could handle herself for one day. So, after pulling on a light, long-sleeved shirt, Hawk grabbed his thick weeding gloves and headed out to the gardens. His talk with Bear a few days earlier had helped calm his nerves a little, but he still was not crazy about current circumstances. Weeding would at least put his nervous energy to productive use.

He had not expected to see Ruby there. It seemed like forever ago since the last time they had run into each other in the gardens, back when he was a shameless flirt. Hawk had to laugh at himself when he realized what a douche bag he had been before all this baby business. He felt bad now for the way he had probably led Ruby on only to immediately drop her. But he had been able to move past any awkwardness that might have been between him and Ruby. He had to, really. Nova's health, as well as the health of their baby, was in her hands.

The thought crossed his mind for a moment to walk on by. She seemed pretty content to be alone anyway. But he paused. "Hey, Ruby. What's up? Where's your little pixie?"

Ruby was very used to being flirted with, so it wasn't as if Hawk flirting with her had been something bad or bothersome in any way. In a way, she liked the attention, even if that was a trait that wasn't the core of her personality any more. Being dropped just as quickly as she'd been picked up...that was different. But it was alright, nothing wrong with it. She hadn't thought things awkward between the two of them at all. Nova was the girl for Hawk and that was that. Nothing more, nothing less. Ruby was happy that she could help them now that they had a baby on the way. had they been on their own, things might not have gone very well at all for Nova or the baby.

When she heard Hawk's voice, she looked up with a smile. "Nothing much other than me having to give some stitches a few minutes ago. Nothing serious." Ruby tucked some of her hair behind her ear. "Tink's off playing with some of her friends. So I'm left with a morning by myself."

She saw the gloves and tipped her head a bit in curiosity. "And what are you up to?"

"Ah," he held the gloves up a little. "Just about to go do a little weeding. The gardens always need it, and it takes my mind off of..." he trailed off. Everybody knew about Nova and their baby, especially Ruby, so it was not like he was trying to keep stuff a secret. Hawk just did not want to sound like he regretted what was going on. "Just stuff," he finally finished. "You know, this crazy life and everything. Anyway, you can come along if you want to. I won't put you to work or anything, but the conversation would be welcome. Unless you want to be alone. It's cool; I understand."
