Week Fourteen : Tuesday
Who: Hawk and Bear
What: Hawk's freaking out about Nova's safety
When: Later afternoon
Where: Bear's place
Rating: PG-13 (Hawk and Bear are potty-mouths)
Status: In Progress

Hawk had not been able to sleep all the previous night, and the daylight had not eased any of his fears. He and Kestral had received a letter from the leader of the new tribe in town called the Jackals. While the message had not been outright threatening, he did not like the rumors that were circulating about the leader Jax. Under normal circumstances, Hawk would have had a pleasant sit-down with the guy and hear him out. But Nova and the baby had complicated things and set him on edge when it came to potentially dangerous outsiders.

So, giving Nova a much-needed a break from his hovering, he sought out Bear. Hopefully his level-headed friend could help him reclaim his once cool sense of reason.

"Hey, Bear, you home, man?" he called and knocked on the door. Grinding his teeth in anxiety, he prayed Bear was not off hunting or in town.

Bear looked up from the translation he was working on when the knock sounded at his door. He hadn't been expecting anyone today, hadn't been anticipating a visit of any kind, so he was still in n old ragged t-shirt and a pair of boxers when he stood to wander towards the door. Hawks voice came drifting through the wood, fatigue and worry and stress laced through every syllable that echoed through the trees. Bear sighed and opened the door, leaning on the door frame and taking in the shadows under Hawk's eyes, the hair that had been run through by fingers enough time to stand on end, and the look that only filled those eyes when there were too many stresses to handle on his own.

Bear chuckled and motioned for Hawk to come inside. He said nothing, knowing Hawk would need to talk things through, get all of it out on the table before Bear could give him the solace he sought. Bear knew the problems already, of course. He was the one people got their advice from, the one that made sense of his words before speaking them and therefore, valued by most for his honesty and straight forward opinions. Not to mention, he'd helped Hawk build this place from the ground up and knew the man better than most. He put on a pot of water and separated tea leaves from the canister next to his stove. When the water had boiled and the leaves were steeping in mugs, Bear sat down at his wooden table and motioned for Hawk to do the same.

"Ok," He said, he deep voice making the liquid in his cup ripple, "Talk."

Even in his freaked-out state, Hawk was able to take some solace in Bear's chuckle as he entered the house. It at least meant that Hawk had not bothered him too badly. After taking a seat, he buried his face in his hands for a few moments. He breathed deeply in his hunched over position as he tried to organize this thoughts. Where to start?

"Ok, here's the thing," he started, raising his head and clasping his hands firmly in front of him, "Nova's pregnant, and I have next to no experience with kids. So that's freak-out issue number one: am I going to be at least a decent father? But then I think, god, Nova's so small. What if she can't survive it with only our rough forms of medicine? What if I lose her and the baby? I mean, yeah, I love her and it would hurt like hell, but you know Wolf would make sure I suffered a good long time before he finally let me die. And if they do survive - oh, man, this Jax dude. I've heard what he did to Libby, and I just don't trust him, man. Us Feathers are self-sustaining so creeps like him can't hurt us. What if he tried to hurt Nova or our baby?" He did not mean that he wished Nova was not a part of his life, or that he did not want their child, things just used to be so much easier.

He bowed his head and covered his face once more, catching his breath. "I just don't like the vibe I get from him. Sometimes I think that if things end up getting bad, then I'll just take Nova somewhere else. I don't know where else we could go that would be safe, but there has to be others out there. And damn, man, it's killing me not being able to keep my cool like I used to. I mean, you remember what it used to be like. I kinda miss being able to just not care."

Bear sighed as he he put the little wooden bowls of tea on the table in front of Hawk. He'd been right in his guess of what he was going to hear. There were a very specific set of worries that could have been the problem and Hawk had just listed each and every one of them. Taking a sip of his tea, he let his friend breath for a minute, chuckling a bit when he registered what he had said about Wolf making sure he suffered... Leave it to Hawk to think about that when he already had enough to worry about. His chuckle shook through the floor again as he looked at the mess in front of him. He slid Hawk's tea closer to him.

"Drink it, friend. It will do you good." He waited for Hawk to take a sip before he continued, "Man, I see where you're coming from. Everyone in the trees have noticed how stressed you are lately." He smirked. "Women wind you pretty tight to begin with, even without a child in their belly. You have a lot on your plate with that. Now there's this Jax guy, who I really don't like, might I add, who come's waltzing into town offering bullshit peace offerings. But you gotta breath, Hawk. You look like shit. And with you looking like shit, the Feathers are getting a bit ruffled. Nova is one of the strongest people I know but you stressign is gonna stress her out and that is not good for a baby, man. You gotta find some way to have faith in that tiny little girl. She'll pull through this. Of course, she may scare the hell outta you when the baby comes. And I'd suck up to here until then because she's gonna hate your guts wehn the labor pains start." His smirk got bigger. "But that little child is gonna be a beacon for everyone around here. I'd be surprised if people didn't start flocking to Sundance just so see the little miracle themselves." He took another sip of his tea. "As for Jax, we gotta start building defenses man. We have to start preparing for another war, even if it seems like it's far off right now. It's inevitable. Alst time people were able to get to the farm from town but let's face it, the trees are the safest place. We need to start getting ready for the Wolves and Carrion to join us. Maybe some of the Runners too. The fact of the matter is, Jax is way worse than Ace and his little gang ever were. Because he's genuinely power-hungry. But you gotta stay cool man. You've got me. You've got Kestral and Miles. With their brains and our brawn, we can turn this into a fortress. We can make it safe for Nova and the baby." He had leaned forward during his speech, his elbows on the table, his cup between his hands. His eyes bored into Hawks, daring him to freak out, to realized Bear was wrong.

Hawk obeyed when his friend told him to drink, though Bear's gentle demeanor had already began to soothe him. As the warm tea seeped into his veins, Bear's deep and soft voice seemed to cradle his frazzled brain. But this soothing spell fractured at the mention of Hawk causing Nova and the baby stress, not to mention the rest of his tribe. Gah, leave it to him to cause more issues even when trying to think of others first. However, Hawk remained silent and listened to his friend. He knew Bear was right; Nova was one tough cookie, and he laughed as Bear smirked about labor pains, though in truth, that was probably the one moment that would scare him the most.

Then an odd feeling sparked in his chest as Bear talked about his child being a beacon. He had been so wrapped up in the baby's safety, that he had somehow managed to overlook the fact that his child would be an incredible miracle. Was it naive of him to think that perhaps these hopeful strangers might be able to offer assistance should Jax become a problem? Or was he placing too much faith in people?

Bear's words continued to bolster his confidence. The Twin Feathers could be safe. If, for whatever reason, Jax decided to make war on him alone, he at least had allies. Even if Wolf hated him for impregnating his sister, Hawk could at least count on help from the Wolves tribe. And the last war proved that the Feathers could indeed survive on their own, even with the extra burden of other tribes. But this time, they could be prepared. They could have extra stores ready, to last them through winter if need be.

Hawk took another comforting gulp of the tea before he sat the cup back down on the table and met Bear's gaze. "Thanks, man," he finally replied, reaching out to pat Bear on his shoulder. "I guess that's all I really needed: someone to tell me that it would be ok, and to offer a plan to back it up. Kestral being sick has just thrown me off. I mean, she's my brains, my first line of defense." His gray eyes fell back to the table as he rolled things around in his head, and then looked back up to meet his friend. "We're really going to be ok, man?" Hawk needed to hear it one more time, not to make him feel better, but to know it was the honest-to-gods truth.
